After the earthquake his northeast Japan on March 11, 2011, many touching stories that I saw with my own eyes happened around me.
I had to walk home since all the 31 had stopped after the quake. On my way home I 32 an old Japanese lady at the bakery shop who was giving out free bread, which made my heart 33 . A middle-aged Japanese man was holding a sign that said, “Please use our 34 .” He was 35 his house for people to go to the restroom.
My friend wanted to 36 others. He stood in the cold with a sign “If you are okay with a motorcycle, I will 37 you to your house.” And then I saw him take one gentleman home, all the way to faraway place!
Then the next day I drove to 38 my car with gas. There was a 39 gas now and many gasoline stations were either closed or had very 40 lines. I got 41 ,since I was behind 15 cars. Finally, when it was my 42 , the man smiled and said, “ 43 this aituation, we are only giving $ 30 worth gas per person. Is that alright?”“Of course, I’m just glad that we are all able to 44 ,” I said. His smile gave me so much 45 .
I saw a man at the evacuation(疏散) center 46 when people brought food to him, It was the first time in three days that food has been brought to their center. However, after he wiped the tears, his next 47 surprised me. “I am very 48 that we are provided with food. But people in the city next to us haven’t 49 any food at all. Please go to that centre as well.” And when hearing that, I realized there is a bright future on the other side of this 50 .

He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were 36 her, but nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised. In order not to appear 37 , she went along.
As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too 38 to say anything and she felt uncomfortable. Suddenly, he asked the waiter, "Could you please give me some 39 ? I'd like to put it in my coffee."
They stared at him. He turned 40 , but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank. 41 , she asked, "Why salt with coffee?" He explained, "When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing on the sea ... I could feel its taste salty, like salty coffee. Now 42 I drink it, I think of my childhood and my hometown. I 43 it and my parents, who are still there."
She was deeply touched. A man who can admit that he's homesick must love his home and 44 his family. He must be responsible.
She talked too, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the start to their love story.
They continued to 45 . She found that he met all her 46 . He was tolerant, kind, warm and careful. She would have missed the catch if not for the salty coffee!
So they 47 and lived happily together. And every time she made 48 for him, she put in some salt, the way he liked it.
After 40 years, he passed away and left her a letter which said:
My dearest, please 49 my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous I asked for salt instead of 50 .
It was hard for me to ask for a 51 , so I just went ahead. Many times, I tried to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would 52 everything.
Sweetheart, I don't exactly like salty coffee. But as it 53 so much to you, I've learnt to enjoy it. Having you 54 me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again, 55 it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.

Mr. Glen is a millionaire. Five years ago, after returning from abroad to his motherland, he 36 his small company. Speaking of success, Glen often tells us a story about his extra expensive “school” fee. He always 37 his success to it.
At that time, Glen, who already got a Ph.D. degree, 38 to return to the homeland, starting a company. Before leaving, he bought a Rolex watch with the 39 made through years of work after school and the scholarships. At the airport he had to accept the 40 customs check. The watch on his wrist was also demanded to be taken down for 41 . Glen knew that carrying the specific goods out had to pay the tax, and he worried about paying 42 for his watch. So when he was checked, he told a lie that his watch was a 43 fake(假货). When he was 44 of his “smarts”, immediately, in the presence of Glen, the officers hit the watch, 45 cost nearly 100,000, into pieces 46 hearing Glen’ s words. Glen was 47 . Before he understood why, he was taken to the office to be examined 48 . For many times of entry-exit 49 he knew that only those people in the “blacklist” would “enjoy” this special treatment. The officers looked over everything carefully in the box, and 50 him no matter what time of entry and exit he must accept the check and if 51 reusing and carrying fake and shoddy goods, he would be 52 according to law! Suddenly, his face turned red, and he had nothing in mind after boarding the plane for long.
After returning to the homeland, he often told the story to his family, and his employees, too. He said that this made a deep 53 on him, because the additional high “school” fee that he had ever paid made him realize the value of 54 , which he would remember as the 55 of his success forever.

People often fall ill because of me. 36 , they can hardly blame me; it is largely their own 37 . A tired person may get 38 , especially when he goes to crowded places with polluted air. A sudden change in 39 is another factor. In hot summer, people turn on the air-conditioner upon returning home. They will catch a cold easily.
My latest victim is an energetic student. After school, he played football hard for two hours. Though 40 . He still went to the cinema. Then he got back home and took a cold shower immediately.
I seized this golden chance to 41 him. He reacted, trying to 42 me, but I was already 43 deep in his throat. He kept sneezing(打喷嚏) and his nose was running. 44 he put on some warm clothes, it didn’t work, for there were too many of us. Besides, his sore throat kept 45 him, and he developed a cough to force me and my family out, but 46 .
The next day he couldn’t go to 47 .He had lost his appetite and was not as 48 as before. His mother made him orange juice every few hours for more vitamin C, which would help his 49 .
For two days he was 50 by his mother. As he rested more, his defense strengthened and I began lo feel the 51 . I knew I had to 52 him before long. But I am not the one who gives up easily, and I made every effort to fight back. 53 , it was my turn to feel 54 now, for his defense system was starting an all-out attack against me. I became 55 and finally my time was over.

It was a cold winter’s night when I stopped for gas on my way home from work. I was tired and had a slight 36 .
I worked in a 37 doctor’s office and this was one of those days when the unexpected happened, making the schedule run 38 than usual. It seemed I was going to be late 39 home and my husband, being the 40 person, would be ready to pronounce me late once again. Maybe 41 I hurried, I could still make it home.
I was heading inside to 42 for my gas when I noticed an older couple at the counter. I heard them asking for 43 to the local hospital. It was the same hospital that I had just 44 a few minutes ago.
The young man at the counter was trying to be 45 in explaining how to get there, with two other people making 46 . One of them was 47 trying to give them a whole different route back. It was then that I walked over to the couple and said, “Would you like to follow me to the 48 ?”
A look of 49 crossed the woman’s face.
“I’m going right by there,” I said, which wasn’t a(an) 50 since I had just made up my mind to do 51 that.
I got in my car and began the journey back. I was trying to watch to be sure they were right 52 me. It took only fifteen minutes to get there as rush hour traffic was beginning to 53 . I felt better than I had all day and my headache was nearly gone.
Later, as I arrived home, my husband 54 , “So you aren’t ever late any more.”
I said, “Sometimes it’s 55 to be late.”

My family came to America in 1985. _21_ of us spoke a word of English. Each morning

On the first day of the sixth grade, I noticed one little girl called Amy on the school bus. “ Don’t 16 her,” warned Lauren, who sat beside me. “or they will make fun of you.”
Amy had many 17 differences - lots of reasons for other kids to make fun of her. Her eyes weren’t straight. Her glasses were an inch thick. And she had really uneven teeth.
Every day 18 we drove to and from school, kids would shout insults(侮辱) at Amy. “God,what a strange face! Stop 19 me!”“Mr. Rolland (the driver)! Amy took off her glasses, and now her eyes are frightening me. 20 her put them back on!” For a while I shouted my 21 of insults, just so I’d fit in. 22 , I didn’t want them to treat me the same way they treated Amy.
But while I was insulting her, my heart 23 for the girl. I could see that the insults were making her look uglier, because she was so 24 and alone. Then I wanted to 25 her. I just didn’t know how to stop my schoolmates - 26 the night of our class roller-skating party.
Our whole class was there, 27 Amy. Amy didn’t know how to skate, but I could see how much she wanted to have 28 like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand. 29 we began the journey together around the skating rink. She just smiled, and every once in a while she would laugh in excitement.
On the school bus the next morning, there was much 30 about Amy and me skating together. But 31 insulted her or me. And they didn’t do that for the rest of the year. I 32 heard from Amy again after the school year. But I’ve always 33 that I changed her life for the better.
She changed my 34 . After becoming her friend, I no longer tried to impress people by trying to 35 like them. I became myself.

Someone said that encouragement is simply reminding a person of the “shoulders” he’s standing on, the heritage he’s been given. That’s what happened 36 a young man, the son of a(n) 37 baseball player, was chosen by one of the minor league teams. Hard as he tried, his first season was 38 , and by midseason he expected to be removed 39 day. The coaches were 40 by his failure because he possessed all the characteristics of a superb(杰出的)athlete, but he seemed to have become 41 from his potential.
His 42 seemed darkest one day when he had already struck out his first time at bat. Then he stepped up to the batter’s box again and quickly ran up two strikes. The catcher called a 43 and ran for a conference to discuss strategies. While they were busy, the 44 , standing behind him, spoke casually to the boy.
Then play 45 , the next pitch was thrown and the young man knocked it out of the park. That was the turning 46 . From then on, he played the game with a new confidence and power that quickly 47 the attention of the parent team, and he was called 48 to the majors.
On the day he was leaving for the city, one of his coaches asked him what had caused such a turnaround. The young man replied it was the 49 remark the judge had 50 that day when his baseball career had seemed 51 .
“He told me I reminded him of all the times he had stood 52 my dad in the batter’s box,” the boy explained. “He said I was holding the bat just the way Dad had held it. 53 he told me, ‘I can see his genes in you; you have your father’s 54 .’ After that, whenever I swung the bat, I just 55 I was using Dad’s arms instead of my own.”

The young couple had another quarrel. They were sitting silently when the landlady came in and asked, “You don’t 31 the house any more?” He kept silent and she 32 shook her head.
The landlady began 33 the house. After looking around, the landlady screamed, “See how you have 34 my house? The walls are full of nails! How could I rent it to others?”
She began looking around her 35 room. Four years ago on the wedding night, he felt deeply 36 to her, saying, “I feel so sorry to you for 37 you live in this small room. In the future I will buy our own big house.”
This tiny room has two nails on the wall next to the door, one for her bag and the other 38 . At that time, she threw all her stuff such as her bag and umbrella on the 39 once she entered the room, staring at the whole 40 and feeling terribly upset. Then he began 41 more nails into the wall. There were three nails on the left, on which 42 his clothes yesterday and four on the right used to 43 their wedding photo frame.
The landlady started to pull the nails out with a tool. After the nails were 44 , the walls were left with countless holes. Suddenly, she felt heartbroken as if she were 45 nonstop through these holes.
She 46 to her feet and exclaimed, “Stop removing the nails! We will rent the house 47 we buy our own!” He gazed at her surprised, and then turned round, tears over his cheek.
She 48 realized that marriage was like a wall and that all 49 and “cold wars” were like the nails on the wall. 50 , when they were removed, only a wall with holes would remain. But if all the nails were still in their own places, the wall was still complete and reliable.

The back door of the ambulance(救护车) was suddenly shut and the driver ran to the front, jumped into his seat, and started the engine. Inside were the 36 parents, Mr and Mrs Green, the mother holding their baby daughter Ally. The little girl had 37 food stuck in her throat and could hardly breathe.
