I learned how to accept life as it is from my father.21_,he did not teach me acceptance when he was strong and healthy, but rather when he was 22 and ill.
My father was23 a strong man who loved being active, but a terrible illness 24 all that away. Now he can no longer walk and he must sit quietly in a chair all day. Even talking is 25 . Then suddenly my father 30 up. He said, “But, Peter,I gave up31 ! What did I gain?” I thought and thought, but I could not think of anything to say. 32 , he answered his own question: “I 33 the love of my family.” I looked at my sisters and saw tears in their eyes, along with hope and thankfulness.
I was also 34 by his words. After that, when I began to feel irritated(恼怒的)at someone, I 35 remember his words and become36 . “Big boys don’t cry.” I heard those words a lot 36 up in America in the late sixties and early seventies. In those days men were expected to be 37 and rugged and never shed a tear no matter what. Our 38 were all stone faced cowboys who were too 39 to cry. Believing this then I tried my best 40 to cry at all during my teenage and early adult years.
All that changed, 41 , as I was driving home alone one night shortly after my Mom 42 . It was dark and raining outside. I was struggling to 43 the car on the road while at the same time 44 to hold the tears back in my eyes. I remember almost going off the road twice as I blinked back (眨眼控制) the salty water that was burning my 45 and blurring (使模糊) my vision. My hands shook, my heart 46 , and my soul felt dead. 47 I could do it no longer. I stopped, pulled over, lay my head on the steering wheel, and 48 . I cried until the tears couldn’t fall anymore. I cried until the pain that I was holding onto so 49 finally fled my heart.
After that night I 50 something. Big boys do cry. 51 , it is the biggest hearts that cry the most. I realized too that it is our 52 that can release us from our anger and our grief while 53 us to our love and our God. Tears help us to embrace this often bittersweet life. They help us to keep growing 54 to each other in love and joy instead of 55 ourselves up in dull, aching, and lonely hearts.

Recently, I have begun to do rides with a group of guys who ride professionally (老练地). The first day, I finished the ride with great 36 , though I tried hard to keep up with one guy for most the ways. To my 37 , I did a little better the second time.
I decided to work harder to 38 . Yesterday, I 39 so much on my ride that I missed the short route (路线) I usually take; 40 , I stayed on the long route. I had never used this route, so I wasn’t really sure about which 41 I should take. Thankfully, a group of four riders 42 , and I just followed them.
A few minutes later, one of the guys got a flat tire (爆了的轮胎), and, with the help of the others, he had it 43in about a minute. We all waited there 44 he changed his tire. After we started riding again, I noticed something 45 . The guy at the front would ride 46 for a couple of minutes, then he would move over to the side, 47 his way to the end of the line, and the guy behind him would move into the lead position. When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d 36 known. When Dr. Gibbs wasn’t 37 lives, he was planting trees.
The good doctor had some 38 theories on planting trees. He believed in “No pains, no gains”. He never 39 his new trees, which was 40 many people. Once I asked why. He 41 that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each following tree generation will 42 weaker and weaker. So you have to make things 43 for them. He talked about how watering trees 44 shallow roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in 45 of water. I came to understand that he meant deep roots were to be 46 . I planted a couple of trees a few years back and I took good care of them. Two years of 47 has resulted in trees that expect to be waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows, they 48 and tremble their branches. Funny things about those trees of Dr. Gibbs’. The lack of water seemed to 49 them in ways comfort and ease never could.
I used to 50 for my sons that their lives will be easy. But 51 I’ve been thinking that it’s time to 52 my prayer. I know my children are going to meet 53 , and I’m praying they will be strong. The prayer for comfort is seldom met. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, 54 when the winds blow, we won’t be 55 away.
