One cold night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home around one o clock m the morning after a 36 practice at the theatre With he opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines by heart. I was having 37 handling my part-time job at the bank in the daytime and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about 38 both acting and San Francisco. I had 39 too much of city life.
As I walked down the 40 streets under the tall buildings, I felt very small and cold, so I began 41 both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out 42a few homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my 43 , I heard a sound behind me. I 44 quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me 45 so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I 46 what the noise had been. It had been my wallet 47 to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk 48 for 15 minutes, my wallet was 49 to be found.
Just as I was about to quit the 50 , I heard the garbage truck stop to the sidewalk next to 51 .when a voice came from the inside, “Alisa Camcho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened and out jumped a small blonde man with an 52 look in his eyes. “Is this 53 you’re looking for?” He asked, holding up something like a wallet.
It was already 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I couldn’t get much sleep, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some 54 of city life. I realized the city couldn’t be a bad place 55 people were willing to help each other.

By the third year of teaching I’d begun to expect Christmas break more for the school holiday and less for the excitement of the children. I was teaching fourth grade and my students had made me 36 . I just had to get through one of the hardest days of the school year.
The morning bell rang. I walked 37 through the cold into the overly heated school building. Twenty-two smiling faces 38 me at the school bus stop. I forced myself to 39 their smiles. Back into the classroom, they 40 , comparing plans for the 41 . I had to remove one student from each arm 42 I could take a seat at my desk for my morning duties. Before I could find my roll book(点名册) my desk was covered with 43 and gifts followed by a 44 of “Merry Christmas” wishes.
“Oh, thank you,” I must have 45 a million times. Each gift was truly special to me, except my 46 mood. It was kind of them to 47
me. After a while, I heard a small nervous 48 say my name. I looked up to see Brandon standing 49 by my desk, holding a small, round gift. “This is for you.”
“Thank you, Sweetheart.” I laid it on my desk with the others.
“Um, could you 50 it now?”
I gently tore at the paper and tape. “ 51 ,” he said, “it’s breakable.” Slowly I opened a small, green Christmas tree ornament(装饰物), complete with a hook already 52 . It dawned on me what he had done. Then a nearby student said that he just pulled that off his own tree. I tried to keep my 53 back.
Later that day, I sat 54 the ornament in my hands. Was I really so important to this child that he had searched for something to give me? Now every year as I 55 pull a green Christmas ball from my ornament box, I remember the deep influence my students have on me.

I finished my last work of the week and could hardly wait to get home, take off my nursing shoes, and relax.

I didn’t know where she lived, but I was _40_ I would be able to find my way back.
We _41_ about our work as I drove and _42_ we knew it, we arrived at her house. I started driving back. _43_ looked familiar, but at first that didn’t _44_ me. But soon I _45_ something wrong. I recognized nothing. But I told myself to stay _46_.

I _49_ the car and turned off the engine. In total defeat, I put my head down on the wheel, _50_. Then I raised my head and saw a(n) _51_ down the road in front of me. I turned my headlights on. A car! I drove a little _52_, got out of my car and knocked on the window of that car. An elderly man _53_ rolled his window down.
I said that I didn’t know how to get back into town. In silence, he started driving. I ran back to my car and drove behind him. Finally I _54_ a familiar street. As I turned to head home, the car disappeared. Then I _55_ my driveway (车道) when the warning light for my gas tank (汽油箱) turned on.
Though so many years have passed, I still thank the old man from my deepest heart.

I grew up poor---living in the housing projects (住房) with six brothers, three sisters, a varying assortment (各式各样东西的混合) of foster kids (养子), my father, and a wonderful mother, Scarlette Hunley. We had little money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was 36 and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still 37 a dream.
My dream was 38 . By the time I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, and hit anything that moved on the baseball field. I was also 39 : My high school coach Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but taught me how to believe in myself. He 40 me the difference between having a dream and showing conviction (信念). One particular incident with Coach Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer between my junior and senior years, and a friend 41 me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket—cash for dates with girls, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a 42 for my mother. The prospect of a summer job was attractive and interesting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity. Then I realized I would have to 43 summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was 44 as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said. “Your 45 days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.”
I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his 46 to me.
“How much are you going to make at this job, son?” He demanded. “3.5 dollars an hour.” I replied. “Well,” he asked, “Is $3.5 an hour the price of a dream?”
That question, the plainness of it, laid bare for me the difference between wanting something right now and having a goal. I dedicated myself to sports that summer and with the year I was hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates to play baseball, and was 47 a $20,000 contract. I signed with the Denver Broncos in 1998 for $1.7 million, and bought my mother the house of my dreams.

When they 41 their meals, I took their plates back to the kitchen. They talked to me for a while about school, how I was doing, what 42 I was in and what I planned to do in the future.
43 they were leaving, they walked past me and one of them said to me in a 44 and gentle voice, "You are going places. And that was it.They left the 45 and I had tears in my eyes, because they gave me 46 to believe in myself. They 47 my spirit from being down and gave me a 48 to keep on working hard.
People used to tell me that I could not have a career in 49 until I had a degree.I'm now a co-anchor (联合主持人)of a student-produced television 50 . And the best thing is: I'm only 17 years old and I am a senior in high school.

It was so cold that I couldn’t feel my legs. There was going to be a racing contest that night so I was 36 my horse, Skippy, up. I was simply running laps(跑道的圈) around the ring. One summer several years ago, my family was enjoying a barbecue on the beach. After the barbecue, my father-in-law invited me to go fishing. Fishing was his hobby, but I 36 went fishing. We walked a little way along the beach and reached a rock by the shore, and I 37 the hook into the sea from there. Frankly speaking, I am a (n) 38 person, and although I had not felt a tug (猛拽) on the line, I reeled up the hook after five minutes or so. I had caught 39 . It was a starfish. It trembled uneasily when I 40 the hook from its ugly mouth. I threw the starfish back into the sea. After another five minutes I caught another starfish and I threw it back again.
After a while, I caught yet another starfish. That was 41 time, and this time I really got angry. I hit the starfish on the rock 42 throwing it into the sea. I was not in the 43 to continue fishing any more.
When I was 44 the fishing tools, I noticed a little girl looking at the starfish on the rock. We 45 looks with each other. The little girl spoke to me in a 46 voice. “Sir, would you mind if I 47 the starfish back into the sea?”“Not at all,” I replied. “"But you know, there are too many starfish in the sea, and they eat many shellfish. 48 , they look so ugly. I don't like them.”
“I understand,” said the little girl. “But if the starfish cannot get back to the sea, it will be 49 by the sun and die. My dead grandfather once told me that there are no living creatures that have no right to exist in the world. God 50 every creature because it was needed by nature. Poisonous snakes, spiders, and starfish were born into this world with a certain 51 for their existence.”
“All right, dear, please throw the starfish back into the sea,” I said to the little girl, feeling 52 . The girl picked up the starfish and gently put it into the sea, and she53 at me and said, “Thank you, sir.”
Many people like "cute" creatures such as dogs, cats, and rabbits, while they tend to dislike “ugly” creatures such as snakes, spiders, and starfish. However, the “cuteness” and “ugliness” of things are decided 54 only on one’s personal opinions. There are no living creatures that have no 55in the world-- this is what I learned from the little girl.
