[1] When children go to camp, they are on their own, sometimes for the very first time in their lives. They have to decide what to wear, what to eat and which activities to participate in. As a result, they develop confidence and independence.
[2] As self-respect develops from learning to be on their own, children continue to try new activities. Also it is possible that they will engage in what they are unfamiliar with. In school, children do not experience success in the same way. Camp can be a school without failure because just having fun makes them a success.
[3] One of the greatest benefits of a camp experience is that children develop social skills. In a camp setting, a good counselor will make sure that every camper is included in the activity and that each child interacts with the others in a positive way. They learn to give and take, and they learn how to work and cooperate. Something as simple as clean-up, is not only there to get the cabin clean, but to promote a team atmosphere of working together which in turn results in friendship.
[4] The obvious benefit of camp is that campers make long lasting friendships. These friendships can often be unique and special because campers are living with each other and see the true personalities. Children learn to see others from a different viewpoint. Children tend to be accepted for who they are and do not have to be concerned about what they wear, what they are good at and how they look. This is because in a camp setting, respect and caring finally win out over materialistic objectives.
[5] In a word, camp does give children fun, friends and fulfillment.

Today there are policemen everywhere, but in 1700, London had no policemen at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night and they were not paid.
In 1750, Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called “Bow Street Runners”, because they worked near Bow Street. Fifty years later, there were 120 “Bow Street Runners”, but London had become very big and needed more policemen. So in 1829, London Police Force was started with 3,000 officers. Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
I remember a day 17 years ago quite well. That day,our twin sons,Chad and Brad, loaded their car and left home to go to college.I realized that our dinner table would soon become a “table for two”. Sure, the boys would come home on the weekends, but even so, I knew our family life would never be exactly the same again.
Before leaving, the boys walked around each room of the house to make sure they hadn't forgotten anything they needed. We all walked outside.Chad and Brad gave me big hugs and quickly got into their car. I waved as they drove away. When I couldn’t see their car any longer,I began to sob. My husband Roy tried to comfort me, but I could see grief in his eyes, as well.
There are many parents who would experience this period.Bittersweet feeling will be present. While the parents feel pride and joy for their children, they will also feel a sense of grief.Painful moments fill their minds. While I can not adequately explain the feelings,I can still remember how I felt when we began that new chapter in our lives.
As time went on,Roy and I are now accustomed to our table for two and we enjoy our lives together. As an added bonus,“dinner for two” is much more affordable than dinner out for an entire family.I have to admit I still miss our children and the old times we had together. But I have to say I enjoy the time I spend with my husband more than ever before.
Roy and I have always enjoyed each other's company, but after the children went to college,we found a great amount of strength in each other. Some things have changed over the years. Our love for one another has grown stronger with each passing day.Together,Roy and I are now doing things we never dreamed possible. Our children oftentimes talk about how we are busier and happier than we have ever been before. Could it be because we fell deeper in love as we spent quality time together at our table for two?

Many people run after goals that they hope will make them happy, but happiness is not always the final result. So how does one decide which goals will end in personal happiness and which will not?How do the things in life affect personal happiness?
The most important thing is people’s attitude toward life, which can greatly affect their personal levels of happiness and satisfaction with life.
Psychologists have known for some time that optimism is a good way to fight against unhappiness. It’s probably no secret that optimistic people are considered to be much happier people than pessimists. There are specific characteristic features optimists have (pleasant ways of thinking), that bring them more success, greater health, increased life satisfaction, and other good things. If you became an optimist, it can mean that you became a very happy person, despite your circumstances, and it can actually bring more things into your life to be happy about. “If you are optimistic and you think life is going to get better, it will become a selffulfillment prediction.” says one of the scientists. “Happy people manage to look on the bright side, even if they meet big problems on their way.”
Positive psychologists believe that people can learn how to become happy and that everyone can teach themselves to see a half empty glass as half full. All they have to do is to spend time thinking about all the things that have gone right for them, rather than complaining what has gone badly. But people who are depressed usually think and worry about something that went wrong in the past.

While climbing K2 in Pakistan, author Greg Mortenson became ill and got lost. He got help in a small village named Korphe. The people of the village took good care of him, feeding him and letting him sleep in the village chief’s house. They also gave him one of their most rare treats: sweet tea. As Mortenson recovered from his illness, he noticed that the children of the village worked and went to school outdoors. Their teacher came only three times a week and they didn’t have blackboards. They used sticks to write on the ground. The day he left the village, 他许诺回来建一所学校。 His school would allow both boys and girls to attend. He kept his promise and helped found a school with a building and supplies so the kids could study indoors with real writing tools.
那是在1993年. Today Mortenso is responsible for building 80 school in Central Asia. He has helped more than 18,000 girls receive an education so far.
Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.
Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight.
When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.
Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.
Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to crate. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.
Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. Many valuable(有价值的) lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

Many of the problems facing today’s world aren’t news to us. The environment is in dire need of help because it’s being damaged, hunger is widespread throughout the world, and workers in the Third World Countries are continuously being exploited. Therefore, individuals across the globe need to band(团结)together for a cause and use their collective efforts to make all the difference in the world.
For instance, one person recycling a can or a bottle doesn’t seem like much. But if every household in a given city was to recycle and conserve energy, that city could make a huge positive impact on environmental damage. Similarly, there are countless ways to help fight world hunger—whether it’s to donate money to a dedicated worldwide charity, donate canned goods to your local charity, or even make lifestyle changes like going vegetarian. World hunger is a massive problem—but it doesn’t mean individuals themselves can’t make a difference.
Worker exploitation is another huge problem. All across the world—particularly in the Third World Countries—workers are forced to labor long hours, with close to no pay. Yet these workers continue to show up to such a way of life, because they have no other options.
So, how can people like us help fight such a big problem? Simply raising awareness of the products you buy in stores—from clothing to food—is a massive start. For example, if you see two similar products side by side in a food shop, but one of them is labeled “fair trade”, you’ll know immediately that the workers who labored to produce that product were given a fair price for their goods. And true, fair trade products might cost a little bit more, but buying them is a significant start to help fight worker exploitation.
In short, each of us should be socially conscious to make a difference to widespread social problems.

How can a city make a huge positive impact on environmental damage? (no more than 5words)
What should be done to fight world hunger? (no more than 8 words)

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车). They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions many miles. But few will know--or even think to ask--who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging(吃力地携带) groceries(杂货物品) around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.
After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts. “Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied.
But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的) customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come--those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model. Perhaps that’s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937--before the coming of the shopping cart.

Do you blank out or feel so nervous in exams that you have trouble writing answers to questions that you knew just last night? If so, you likely have a case of test anxiety.
But, don’t be afraid. By recognizing the problem, you are taking the first step towards overcoming it.
Believe it or not, a touch of nervousness can sharpen your mind, allowing you to perform more quickly. This is because under stress, the body releases the hormone adrenaline (肾上腺素), which prepares it for something important that will happen. However, too much anxiety can result in sleeplessness, loss of appetite before tests, and poor performance. Some people might feel hot and tired. With great anger they often shout or complain for no reason.
If you worry a lot or are a perfectionist, you are more likely to have trouble with test anxiety. Those who have prepared poorly for a test or have had negative experiences taking tests may also experience test anxiety.
When you feel a storm of anxiety coming on, stop what you’re doing and make your mind a blank. If possible, actually tell yourself to “STOP!” This will get your mind off the stress. Then think of being at a place of comfort and let your body relax. As you continue the test, find questions you know the answers to and answer them first. This will help restore your confidence.
Important of all, talk to yourself using positive languages. Make it a habit to replace each negative thought with a logical reason. For example: “I've studied hard and I know the material, so I'm ready to do the best I can.”
Another thing you can do is to learn to accept mistakes. In fact, they can be valuable learning opportunities.
Last but not least, start test preparation early-three to five days ahead of the quiz or test. After all, good study habits and skills-for example, time management and notetaking will give you the feeling that you are in control.

Complaints should be made to a responsible person. Go back the shop where you bought the goods, taking with you any receipt you may have. Ask to see the buyer in a larger store. In a small store the assistant may also be the owner so you can complain directly. In a chain store, ask to see the manager.
Even the bravest person finds it difficult to complain face to face, so if you do not want to do it in person, write a letter. Stick to the facts and keep a copy of what you write. At this stage you should give any receipt numbers, but you should not need to give receipts or other papers to prove you bought the article. If you are not satisfied with the answer you get, or if you do not get a reply, write to the managing director of the firm, shop, or organization. Be sure to keep copies of your own letters and any you receive.
If your complaint is a just one, the shopkeeper may offer to replace or repair the faulty article. You may find this an attractive solution. In certain cases you may have the right to refuse the goods and ask for your money back, but this is only where you have hardly used the goods and have acted at once. Even when you cannot refuse the goods you may be able to get some money back as well. And if you have suffered some special loss, if for example a new washing machine tears your clothes, you might receive money to replace them. If the shopkeeper offers you a credit note to be used to buy goods in the same shops but you would rather have money, say no. If you accept a credit note remember that later you will not be able to ask for your money. If the shopkeeper refuses to give you, ask for advice from your Citizens’ Advice Bureau before you accept a credit note. In some cases the shopkeeper does not have to give you your money back---if, for example, he changes an article simply because you don’t like it or it does not fit. He does not have to take back the goods in these circumstances.
When making a complaint, what had better you take with to see the person in charge?(No more than 8 words) (2 marks)

What are you advised to do if you are embarrassed to make a face-to-face complaint? (No more than 5 words) (2 marks)

[1]Oops! In your rush to get to school, you drop a piece of toast on the floor. Do you throw it away or decide it’s still OK to eat? If you’re like most people, you eat it. Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which claims foods are safe to eat,if you pick them up within 5 seconds of dropping them. But you might want to think again. Scientists now say that 5 seconds are all it takes for foods to become contaminated with enough bacteria to make you sick.
[2]Bacteria can cause many kinds of illnesses. Some kinds of bacteria can grow on food. If we eat foods on which these bacteria are growing, we can become sick. One of these food-borne bacteria is Salmonella. It makes 1.4 million people sick every year. Earlier this year, 370 people became sick after eating peanut butter that had been contaminated with Salmonella at the manufacturing factory. Salmonella are often found in raw eggs and chicken. Cooking kills these bacteria, which is why it is so important to cook eggs, chicken, and other foods carefully.
[3]Being a good housekeeper is another good way to prevent infection. If household surfaces aren’t washed thoroughly, they can support Salmonella for weeks. A team of scientists at Clemson University in South Carolina have tested the 5-second rule, using sandwich ingredients. First, they placed a known amount of Salmonella cells on three surfaces: wood, tile, and carpet. They then placed a slice of bread and a slice of bologna(博洛尼亚大红肠) on each surface for 5, 30, or 60 seconds. After just 5 seconds, both the bread and bologna picked up enough bacteria to make you sick.
[4]So forget the 5-second rule. If your toast lands on the floor, throw it away. Stick a fresh slice of bread in the toaster. And this time, be careful not to drop it!

[1]Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. However, you can receive better grades if you want. Yes, even students with average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here’s how:
[2]Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule of your time. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn’t occupy all of the free time on the schedule.
[3]Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.
[4]Skim before you read. Look over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions. Skimming helps double your reading speed and improve you comprehension as well.
[5]_____. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material, too. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on tests.
[6]Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t worry excessively about a single test.

[1] I was walking home from school one day and it happened to be a particularly cold and windy day. It was freezing and I was crazy enough to forget my hats and gloves. You can imagine my cheeks were rosy red and my hands were as numb as they can be.
[2] All of a sudden, an old lady drove up beside me and asked if I would like a ride home. At first I said it was No, but she persisted (坚持) and her warm smile melted away the thought that my parents had often told me never to talk with strangers! We had an amazing chat and she had just such a sweetheart. She told me her address and she dropped me off.
[3] I didn’t see her or talk to her for about a month and one night remembering her kind gesture, I decided to return the favor. So I made a lot of cookies and walked down to her house with my friend. At first I was a bit worried she would not remember me or think that I was a psycho (精神病患者) who poisoned cookies, but luckily, I was completely wrong. She was so happy, and she hugged me and kissed me and seemed so shocked that anyone would do something like that!
[4] When I got home my mom informed me that she called and told my mom that she cried because she was so touched. She said she would never forget the kindness that was given to her! That filled me with such joy! There really is nothing else like helping others and making someone’s day brighter!

My friend, Emma Daniels, spent the summer of 1974 traveling in Israel. During her month-long stay in Jerusalem she often went to a café called Chocolate Soup. It was run by two men, one of whom—Alex—used to live in Montreal. One morning when Emma went in for coffee, while chatting with her new friend Alex, she mentioned that she had just finished the book she was reading and had nothing else to read. Alex said he had a wonderful book she might like, and that he’d be happy to lend it to her. As he lived just above the café, he quickly ran up to get it. The book he handed to Emma just minutes later was Markings, a book by a former Secretary—General of the United Nations (UN).
Emma had never read it, nor had she ever bought a copy. But , when she opened it up, she was floored to see her own name and address inside the cover in her own handwriting. It turned out that the summer before, at a concert back in Montreal, Emma had met a Californian who was in town visiting friends. They decided to exchange addresses, but neither of them had any paper. The man opened up a book he was carrying in his backpack(背包) and asked Emma to write her name and address inside. [1] It’s good to make a mistake, and here is why. First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you expand? The simple answer is “You can’t”. Look around you. Almost everything valuable you see in your world is the result of _____________.
[2] Another good thing about mistakes is this: when you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he remarked that he hadn’t failed 10000 times, but rather had learned 10000 things that didn’t work.
[3] Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done, you will have tried only a few things before you succeed. Every time you made a mistake, you got rid of one bad thing and stepped closer to success.
[4] But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences of a mistake. Instead, when you try something new, you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that you will have opportunities to try again in case that it doesn’t work out as you expected. We all have limited resources so don’t blow them all at one time. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and use these resources appropriately so you can learn, improve, and try it again. Only by using your mistakes in this way can you make significant advances in your career.
[5] There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistake, you’re not trying hard enough.” So go forth and make mistakes.
List three reasons why making a mistake is good for you. (Please answer within 5 words for each blank.)
