I grew up in a small town and the main entertainment was Friday night high school football. It was just a sleepy little town where parents wanted to raise their children away from and danger of a big city, and where teenagers like me leaving to find something bigger and better.
All that one summer night. My friend Lisa, Kim and Tyler held a party for my eighteenth birthday at Lisa’s house. As they kept alcohol to me, I was pretty drunk. I asked Tyler to take me home. With some , we made it out to his car and drove home. News came next morning. Kim, my friend we were five years old, was killed in a car accident. That night after Tyler and I left, Kim, who was more drunk than me, got into her car and towards the highway to go home. She was driving on the wrong side of the road and never saw the truck coming. The driver didn’t see her to avoid the car. They hit head on. Kim died immediately, and the driver was thrown the truck windshield (挡风玻璃) and died a week later.
Whenever I back on that day, I can’t help thinking that it was my to drink so much that night, otherwise things would be different. I know Kim the choice to drink and drive that night , but a part of me will always feel for what happened.
I may not change the with my story, but I do hope that I can make people the responsibility that they have to themselves and others by it. Don’t ever think that your choices are yours . Every choice is like a stone dropped into water—each ripple (波纹) represents someone who your choice . That’s quite an influence, isn’t it?

Why do young adult children become independent so much later than they did in 1970,when the average age of independent living was 21? Why have reduced class sizes and increased per-pupil expenditures (花销)not higher academic achievement levels? Why is the mental health of today’s kids so poor when with that of children in the 1960s and before? Why do today’s become defensive when told by teachers that their children have misbehaved in school?
The answer in two words: parental . Those two words best summarize the between “old” child raising and new, post-1960s parenting. Then, the overall philosophy was that parents were not to be involved with their kids. They were available crisis, but they stood a (an) distance from their kids and allowed them to experience the benefits of the trial-and-error process. It was the child’s ,back then, to keep his or her parents from getting involved. That was children learned to be responsible and determined.
Today’s parents help their kids with almost everything. These are parents who are when it comes to an understanding of their purpose in their kids, lives. Their involvement leads them to personalize everything that happens to their kids; , the defensiveness. But given that schools and mental health professionals have been pushing parent involvement for nearly four decades, the confusion and defensiveness are .
University researchers analyzed three decades of data relating to parent participation in children’s academics. Their conclusions what I’ve been saying since the 1980s: parental help with homework a child’s academic achievement and is not reflected on standardized tests.
Parents who manage a child’s social life interfere with the of good social skills. Parents who manage a child’s after-school activities grow kids who don’t know how to their own free time. Parents who get involved in their kids, with peers grow kids who don’t know how to avoid much less trouble.
These kids have anxieties and fears of all sorts and don’t want to leave their . And their parents, when the time comes, don’t know how to being parents. You can imagine what will become of their future.

Time talks. It speaks more plainly than words. Time in many ways.
Consider the different parts of the day, for example. The time of the day when something is done can give a meaning to the event. It is not a to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that something is urgent and immediate attention.
The samemeaning is telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he may think it is a of life or death. The time chosen for the call its importance.
In social life, time plays a very part. In the United States, gueststend to feel they are not highly regarded if the to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But this is not in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be .
The meaning of time from place to place in the world. , misunderstandings often arise between people from different cultures that time differently. For example, promptness (准时) is greatly in American life. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as or not fully responsible. In the US, no one would think of keeping a business partner for an hour; it would be too rude. A person who is five minutes late is to make a short apology.

【原创】A good friend of mine passed away in June. John had cancer. Before you offer , you should know that he didn’t want to be mourned(哀悼). It’s been a hard request to follow, but he felt he had lived a life. As the cancer progressed, we fell into a(n) of exchanging semi-regular emails. We generally talking about his illness until the very end, we talked about everything else: from baseball to snowstorms, to my garden and his art. We talked as if nothing would . I’d mention a beach trip and John would tell me about surfing there when he was younger. I’d talk about some press(新闻) that I would be attending and he’d tell me about the time he went to a party by JPMorgan’s descendants(后代). In this way, John gave me a(n) view of my world; it became layered with his stories.
One of our favorite things to do was email the other if we happened to find an interesting movie on television. The other night, I a very good movie, and without thinking about it I for my laptop to send him an email, and then I he wasn’t there to receive it. I put my laptop down with a small of uneasiness --- and found something else to watch.
It’s hard not to have a digital presence today. While John wasn’t an active social media ,he did have at least two email addresses, a LinkedIn account, and a website where he shared his art. Now that he’s , these thing still exist, though unattended. I’m sure his work email has been closed, but I have no idea if anyone is his other email address, or has the intention of contacting LinkedIn, or has to his website. I’m sure at some the registration will come to an end and his site will be closed, but until then, John has a(n) online.

After my brother died in an accident,my mother was very sad.I was only 4 years old at the time, but I still understood the in my mom’s attitude toward safety. ,everything around us was potentially .
I grew up with a lot of and rules that were meant to me.For example,I was not to walk home from school by myself, even though everyone I knew already did.I couldn’t evening parties or go to summer camp, what if something happened to me?
As I got older, the list of things to got longer.I became a natural .I was concerned about things like getting cancer, losing my wallet, being caught in car accidents and earthquakes — big and small, real and .The funny part is that you’d never know it by looking at my life, because I’m constantly myself to do the things that frighten or worry me.In fact,I’ve developed a for myself: If it scares me,then I have to do it once.I’ve done lots of things that would have my mom: I’ve ridden a motorcycle,I’ve traveled alone, and I’ve performed stand-up comedy.
Courage isn’t a natural attribute(品质)of human beings.I believe that we have to practice being courageous. The more I do things that scare me or that make me ,the more I realize that I can do a lot more than I originally thought I could do.
Even though I inherited(经遗传获得)my mother’s cautious ,I’ve also come to believe that fear can be a good thing,if we it.Believing that has made my world a less scary place.

One effective way of destroying happiness is to look at something and focus on even the smallest fault. It’s like looking at the tiled (铺瓦的) ceiling and concentrating on the space where one tile is .
Once I heard a bald man said, “Whenever I enter a room, all I see is hair.” Once you’ve what your missing tile is, explore whether acquiring it will make you happy. Then do one of the three things: get it, replace it with a different , or forget about it and the tiles in your life that are not missing.
We all know people who have had a relatively life, yet are essentially unhappy, while people who have suffered a great deal generally remain happy.
The first is gratitude. All happy people are grateful. Ungrateful people cannot be happy. We tend to think that being unhappy leads people to , but it’s truer to say that complaining leads to people becoming unhappy.
The second secret is awareness. We should that happiness is a byproduct (副产品) of something else. The most obvious are those pursuits ( 追求) that give our lives purpose---anything from studying insects to playing baseball. The more passions we have, the more happiness we are to experience.
Finally, the belief that something permanent goes beyond us and that our has some larger meaning can help us to feel happier. We need a spiritual faith, or a philosophy of life. Whatever your philosophy is, it should this truth: if you choose to find the in every situation, you will be blessed, and if you choose to find the awful, you will be cursed. As for happiness itself, this depends on your decision to make.
