I’d meant to go to Miros that day. I’d packed my bag and was ready. The motor-boat in on time. The sky was cloudy, but the wind wasn’t too strong for the two-hour . I stood at my window, staring at the boat. Then I lost of her, an old light-house partly blocked my view of the harbor. A dozen passengers were their way there. I was about to join them --- when a man’s face at the light-house window.
This was strange, because the light-house had been empty, unused and for thirty years. It was stranger still --- because I’d seen that before. I couldn’t place it but it was, or had once been, familiar to me. I opened my window and across. “I know we’ve met before, but I can’t remember where.”
I him to open his if he could and answer me. He did neither. The face behind the glass motionless (静止). Seeing him more clearly now, I knew he was not looking at me. He seemed to be looking upwards, the clouds. How well I’d known that face, sometime, somewhere!
I again. “We met years ago. Was it in Athens in the 1950s? I used to live in Plaka.”
He didn’t reply nor give any that he’d heard. I went back further, to I was in the navy. “Perhaps we met at sea during the war,” and that thought at once him to mind. Commander Leftis! He was Commander Leftis of course! How could I have forgotten? I’d saved his life once. But surely he …
The motor-boat her bell. I turned my eyes. The wind had risen, but she was pulling . Laughing, I called, “Now I’ve missed her, and it’s your , Commander!”
As the boat drew away, the face at the window faded. minute it was there. Looking up, I could see the whites of the eyes. The minute it was gone.
Well, I didn’t rush to the light-house. I knew that Leftis was dead. He died at sea in 1963 or 1964. But there’s one other thing I ought to tell you: the motor-boat never reached Miros. It was lost in a storm, with all the passengers.

A doctor entered the hospital in a hurry after being called in for an urgent .He answered the call as soon as possible, changed his clothes and went directly to the operation block. He found the boy's father in the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the dad , "Why did you take all this to come? Don't you know that my son s life is in danger? Don't you have any sense of ?"
The doctor smiled and said, "I am sorry, I wasn't in the hospital and I as fast as I could after receiving the call...And now, I wish you'd calm down work." I can do my work.”
“Calm down? What if your son is in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son is now what will you do?” said the father .
The doctor smiled again and replied," I will say what Job said in the Bible 'From dust we came and to dust we return, blessed by the name of God'. cannot extend lives. Go and for your son.we will do our best by God's grace."
"Giving advice when we re not is so easy." murmured the father. The operation took some hours which the doctor went out happily.
"Thank goodness! Your son is saved ! " And without waiting for the father's reply he carried on his running. “If you have any question, ask the nurse!"
"Why is he so ? He couldn't wait some minutes so that I could ask about my son's ?" commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left. The nurse answered, coming down her face, "His son died yesterday in a road accident. He was in the funeral when we called him for your son's operation. now that he saved your son's life, he left running to finish his son's funeral."
Never anyone...because you never know how their life is and what they're .

A high school history teacher once told us, “If you make one close friend in school, you will be most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life.” teaches that he is right. Good friendship is just not easily .
It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for a true friendship to . However, there can be disagreement in the need for each of us to think carefully about what kind of friendship we want.
To most of us, are considered very important, but we need to make it clear in our minds what kind of friendship we want. Are they to be close or at arm’s length? Do we want to ourselves or do we want to walk on surface(表面)? For some people, many friendships on the surface are enough and that’s all right. But at some point we need to make sure that our are the same as our friends’ expectations. The sharing of experiences including our tears as well as our dark dreams is the surest way to friendships. But it must be done slowly and only if there are signs of interest and action .
What are some of the of friendship? The greatest is the attraction to expect too much too soon. Deep relationships time. Another “main difficulty” is the selfishness to think one “ ” the other, including his time and attention. , friendships require actions in return. In other words, you must give as as you take. Finally, there is a question of taking care of. Unless you spend time together, talking on the phone, writing letters, doing things together, friendships will die .

I went to a group activity, “Sensitivity Sunday” which was to make us more 36 the problem faced by disabled people. We were asked to “ 37 a disability” for several hours one Sunday. Some member 38 chose the wheel chair. Other wore sound-blocking earplugs (耳塞) or blindfolds (眼罩).

For disabled people, “adopting a wheelchair” is not a temporary(临时的) 46 .
I tried to find a 47 position and thought it might be restful, 48 kind of nice to be 49 around for a while. Looking around, I 50 would have to handle the thing myself! My wheelchair experiment was soon 54 . It made a deep impression on me. A few hours of “disability” gave me only a taste of the 55 , both physical and mental, that disabled people must overcome.

I used to be a very self-centered person, but in the past two years I have really changed. I have started to think about other people__36__I think about myself. I am happy that I am becoming a__37__person.
I think my __38__started when I was at Palomar College. At first, I just wanted to get my__39__and be left alone. It seemed as if everyone but me had made friends and was having fun. So tried a(n) __42__. I started asking people around me how they were doing, and if they were having trouble I__43__ to help. A bigger cause of my new__46__, however, came when I took a part-time job at a Vista Nursing Home. One old lady there who had Alzheimer’s disease became my__47__ . A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor.

To offer his guests coffee, the 37 went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of 38 — porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some 39 , some expensive, some delicate — telling them to help themselves to the 40 .

There was once a famous king whose name was Tamerlane. Like Alexander the Great, he 36 to become the master of the whole world. So he raised a great 37 and made war on other countries. For a long time he wandered in 40 from place to place. His enemies were 41 him. He was about to lose all hope.
One day he was 42 under a tree, thinking of his failure. He had now been a wanderer for twenty days. He couldn’t 43 any longer. Suddenly he saw a small object climbing up the trunk (树干) of the tree. He looked more 44 and saw it was an ant, 45 a grain of wheat(麦粒) as large as itself.
There was a 46 in the tree only a little way above, and that was the home of the ant.
“You are 47 , Mr. Ant,” he said, “but you are carrying something that is too heavy for you.” Just as he 48 , the ant lost its footing and fell to the ground. But it 49 held on to the grain of wheat. Tamerlane 50 the little insect. It tried the second time, the third time ... the twentieth time — but always with the same 51 . Then it tried the twenty-first time. 52 , one little step at a time, it climbed across the rough place where it had 53 so often. The next minute it climbed 54 into its home, carrying the grain of wheat. “Well done!” said Tamerlane, “you’ve taught me a lesson. I, too, will try, try again, 55 I succeed.”

Perhaps the most interesting person I have ever met is an Italian professor of philosophy who teaches at the University of Pisa. 21 I last met this man eight years ago, I have not forgotten his 22 qualities. First of all, I respected his 23 to teaching. Because his lectures were always well-prepared and clearly delivered, students crowded into his classroom. His followers liked the fact that he 24 what he taught. Furthermore, he could be counted on(依赖) to explain his ideas in an 25 way, introducing such aids to 26 as oil paintings, music, and guest lecturers. Once he 27 sang a song in class in order to make a point clear. 28 , 1 admired the fact that he would talk to students outside the classroom or talk with them 29 the telephone. Drinking coffee in the cafe, he would easily make friends with students. Inspiration
“Mama, when I grow up, I’m going to be one of those!” I said this after seeing the Capital Dancing Company perform when I was three. It was the first time that my __36__ took on a vivid form and acted as something important to start my training. As I grew older and was __37__ to more, my interests in the world of dance __38__ varied but that little girl’s dream of someday becoming a __39__ in the company never left me. In the summer of 2005 when I was 18, I received the phone call which made that dream a __40__; I became a member of the company __41__ back to 1925.
As I look back on that day now, it surely __42__ any sense of reality. I believe I stayed in a state of pleasant disbelief __43__ I was halfway through rehearsals (排练) on my first day. I never actually __44__ to get the job. After being offered the position, I was completely __45__. I remember shaking with excitement.
Though I was absolutely thrilled with the change, it did not come without its fair share of __46__. Through the strict rehearsal period of dancing six days a week, I found it vital to __47__ up the material fast with every last bit of concentration. It is that extreme __48__ to detail (细节) and stress on practice that set us __49__. To then follow those high-energy rehearsals __50__ a busy show schedule of up to five performances a day, I discovered a new __51__ of the words “hard work.” What I thought were my physical __52__ were pushed much further than I thought __53__. I learned to make each performance better than the last.
Today, when I look at the unbelievable company that I have the great __54__ of being a part of, not only as a member, but as a dance captain, I see a __55__ that has inspired not only generations of little girls but a splendid company that continues to develop and grow-and inspires people every day to follow their dreams.

A Love Note to My Mom
When I was a little girl, I would often accompany you as you modeled (T台展示) for fashion photographers. It was years later that I finally understood what role modeling 36 in your life. Little did I know you were 37 every penny you earned to go to 38 school.
I cannot thank you enough for 39 you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I wandered into the dining room where you were buried 40 piles of law books. I was 41 . Why were you doing what I do—memorizing textbooks and studying for 42 ? When you said you were in law school, I was more puzzled. I didn’t know Moms 43 be lawyers too. You smiled and said, “In life, you can do anything you want to do.”
As young as I was, that statement kept 44 in my ears. I watched as you faced the 45 of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a 46 and a Mom of five kids. I was exhausted just watching you 47 . With your words of wisdom in my 48 mind, I suddenly felt unlimited freedom to dream. My whole world 49 . I set out to live my life filled with 50 , seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional achievements.
Your words became my motto. I 51 found myself in the unique position of being either the first (woman doctor in Maryland Rotary) 52 one of the few women (chief medical reporters) in my field. I gained strength every time I said, “Yes, I’ll try that.”
Encouraged by your 53 , I have forged ahead(毅然前行) with my life’s journey, less afraid to make mistakes, and 54 meeting each challenge. You did it, and now I’m 55 it. Sorry, got to run. So much to do, so many dreams to live.
