Father’s Day is a fairly new celebration in the British calendar compared with Mother’s Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time.
Father’s Day was first celebrated by Americans         it was inspired by the actions of a man named William Smart. He was a veteran of the US Civil War and his wife        away giving birth to their sixth child. He        six children alone without remarrying, which was undoubtedly        back in those days.
His daughter, Sonora Dodd,       when she was an adult what her father had sacrificed for his        .It was in the early 1900s and she was actually      one day, listening to a sermon on        .She thought there should        be a Father’s Day celebration.
And so the        was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary of Sonora’s father’s death.Britain took the idea of Father’s Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated        since the 1970s.
Father’s Day is never quite such a big commercial event        Mother’ s Day is, probably because it hasn’t been in        for so long. But what do British people do for Father’s Day? Well, most people would buy their fathers a card. The card would probably have nice message in it        what a great Dad their father is.Some people do buy presents as well.
gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks because there are things that Dads can            use even if they don’t want them.In the run-up to Father’s Day, or indeed Mother’s Day, there will be advertisements on TV giving          ideas of CDs or gadgets(小玩意) we can buy.Card shops will be full of mugs or pens and similar goods with “ World’s Greatest Dad”       on them.
Some families      do things together to celebrate Father’s Day like going for a meal.As a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest,       him a cup of tea, or even wash his car and mow the lawn to make him feel really appreciate.

Just off La Rambla Street in Barcelona, I skimmed through The Saints (圣人) of Spain in a bookstore. It would be a good read for the         home. At that moment, I couldn’t help thinking of my own personal saint, the angel who’d        my trip.
It was the first time for me to travel abroad and I called it a “spiritual journey”. I hadn’t            a hotel before setting out         I thought I could find a cheap one when I arrived.          ,  it turned out to be a(n)          .

His life was saved,      , by eight courageous people — his parents, three       and three doctors. The nurses appeared       the true heroines in this real-life story. Optimism and pessimism are both powerful forces. Each of us must choose which we want to ______ our future and our expectations. We can choose to laugh or cry, bless or ______. It’s our decision: from which perspective do we want to view life? Will we look up in ______ or down in desperation?
I believe in the upward look. I choose to ______ the positive and skip right over the negative.
An optimistic attitude is not a luxury(奢侈品); it’s a(n) ______. The way you look at life will determine how you feel, how you perform, and how well you will get along with other people. ______, negative thoughts, attitudes, and expectations ______ themselves; they become a self-fulfilling prophecy (预言). Pessimism creates a dark place where no one wants to live.
Years ago, I drove into a service station to get some gas. It was a beautiful day, and I was feeling great. As I walked into the station to pay for the gas, the attendant said to me, “How do you feel?” That seemed like a(n) ______ question, but I felt fine and told him so. “You don’t look well,” he replied. This ______ me completely by surprise. A little ______ confidently, I told him that I had ______ felt better. Without hesitation, he continued to tell me how bad I looked and that my skin appeared yellow.
By the time I left the service station, I was feeling a little ______. About a block away, I ______ over to the side of the road to look at my face in the mirror. How did I feel? Was I affected with jaundice(黄疸)? Was everything all right? By the time I got home, I was beginning to feel a little nauseous(恶心). Did I have a bad liver? Had I ______ some rare disease?
On another beautiful day, when I went into that gas station, feeling _____ again, I figured out what had happened. The place had recently been painted a bright, distasteful ______, and the light reflecting ______ the walls made everyone inside look as though they had hepatitis(肝炎)! I wondered how many other folks had ______ the way I did. I had let one short conversation with a total ______ change my attitude for an entire day. He told me I looked sick, and before long, I was actually feeling sick. That single ______ observation had a great effect on the way I felt and acted.
The only thing more powerful than negativism is a word of optimism and hope. When a whole culture adopts an upward look, incredible things can be accomplished.

Relationships are hard. It doesn't matter whether it is a relationship      two workmates, a doctor and a patient, a mother and her child or a couple. The fact is,      it  is a relationship involving people, there will always be conflicts once in a while because       human beings are complicated(复杂的).
I guess even in the animal kingdom there are complications, too. For instance, just last weekend l thought my neighbor's cows were      .They like standing outside our gate where there is a huge tree they use to        themselves from the burning sun. Anyway, it was quite         that the grey cow was angry about something and since I didn't      “cows", I couldn't tell what she was complaining about. My guess was that one of the other cows had done/said something to   . her because there was one cow she kept ”addressing".
I guess this goes to     tat as long as one is breathing (man or animal), misunderstandings and       .will always happen, regardless of whether it is at home or at the office, until one is finally
The         is how you handle your displeasure. How do you conduct your arguments? What words do you use7 After the argument, do you ever sit back and probably      anything that you might have said in anger? I ask this        I know for a fact that when you are angry, the likelihood of having the best       you'll ever regret is very high. The words you speak to someone can either build them up, or break them down, or start
a       in their heart or put it out completely. That is how       words are. Words have the power to      or destroy.
If you do not want to hurt those you come into     with, remember to be careful with your words because once they are        ,they can only be forgiven, not forgotten。

My friend BJ Gallagher once worked as a training manager for a large newspaper, which was more than a hundred years old.The company’s past    had blinded the authorities to the need for change, and they    new ideas and would say “This is the way we’ve always done it.”.As the years went by, BJ grew more and more    with their short-sightedness.Finally, she left the company. But she found that she hadn’t left her    behind when she resigned. She carried it with her, like “rocks in the stomach”.
“I finally decided to    about my experiences and my feelings.I   it would be a good mental health       .I wanted to be rid of that company and those people, once and for all.So I wrote and wrote. It wasn’t just a story that poured out — it was a whole    ! My resentment (怨恨)    my writing. The whole world would know how    they were!”
“What   when the book came out?” I asked BJ.
“Not much,” she replied, “The newspaper kept doing what it had    done.My feelings didn’t    them one bit, but it took me several more years to finally   my negative emotions. Finally, the time came when I decided to make amends (修正) for the angry things I had said about the company.I    my former boss to dinner and made my    .I told him I was sorry for being so resentful. It was    a great healing process for me.”
“What was the    outcome?” I asked her.
“Gratitude,” she replied, “Not only wasn’t I resentful any more, but I was grateful to the company. If I hadn’t had those    experiences, I never would have written a book. And the book became hugely successful — now    in 21 languages. In short, my resentment gave way to gratitude.”
She smiled, “I owe them a debt of thanks for giving me such a great tale to tell.”
Trading resentments for gratitude isn’t always easy. But it’s worth it,       gratitude is a far happier feeling than resentment.

Everyone in business has been told that success is all about attracting and retaining (留住) customers. It sounds simple and achievable. But,         , words of wisdom are soon forgotten. Once companies have attracted customers they often          the second half of the story. In the excitement of beating off the competition, negotiating prices, securing orders, and delivering the product, managers tend to become carried away. They forget what they regard as the boring side of business—        that the customer remains a customer.
to concentrate on retaining as well as attracting customers costs business huge amounts of money annually. It has been estimated that the average company loses between 10 and 30 per cent of its customers every years. In constantly changing    , this is not surprising. What is surprising is the fact that few companies have any idea how many customers they have lost.
Only now are organizations beginning to wake up to those lost opportunities and calculate the            implications. Cutting down the number of customers a company loses can make a big           in its performance. Research in the US found that a five per cent decrease in the number of defecting (流失的) customers led to       increases of between 25 and 85 per cent.
In the US, Domino’s Pizza estimates that a regular customer is worth more than $5,000 over ten years. A customer who receives a poor quality product or service on their first visit and          never returns, is losing the company thousands of dollars in        profits (more if you consider how many people they are likely to tell about their bad experience).
The logic behind cultivating customer         is impossible to deny. “In practice most companies’ marketing effort is focused on getting customers, with little attention paid to       them”, says Adrian Payne of Cornfield University’ School of Management. “Research suggests that there is a close relationship between retaining customers and making profits.        customers tend to buy more, are predictable and usually cost less to service than new customers. Furthermore, they tend to be less price           , and may provide free word-of-mouth advertising. Retaining customers also makes it          for competitors to enter a market or increase their share of a market.
