To whom it may concern,
This letter describes the worst travel experience I have ever had.The problems we had were the result of poor management and thoughtless employees.Your airline should be ashamed of treating its  customers so poorly.
On January 5, we arrived in Denver from Houston and checked in for our next flight. It wasn’t long before the agent announced that our flight would be delayed because of a mechanical problem. The equipment was in Aspen, and they expected it to be repaired soon.
Soon shortly turned to much later, and during the delay, weather temporarily closed the Aspen airport. The weather cleared in Aspen and the plane took off very late for Denver. While it was in the air, the agent announced that the plane would be used for the next flight and that our flight was being cancelled.
This cancellation struck me as being unfair. There was a mad scramble (争先恐后) as the 50 or so passengers scheduled for our flight fought for seats on later flights. When the dust settled, we were wait-listed on the 9’-00 flight the next morning. We had to spend the night in the airport.
Coming home was no better.Because of a mechanical problem, it looked like we would miss our connection in Denver. The agent assured us they would hold the Newark flight for us.Needless to say, the flight to Houston taxied out as we pulled into the gate.Arrangements were made for us to take the next flight, so we sat in the airport for 5 hours. When we finally arrived in Houston, our skis were missing. As of this writing, the skis have not been found.
Nothing you can do will make us feel better about our flights. If you are a responsible business, however, you will do what you can to see that passengers in the future are treated better.
With great displeasure,
Phyllis Dooley

Forgiving someone who has hurt you or let you down is never an easy thing. Several new studies, however, say that it could have a lot of health benefits. When you think of forgiveness, you probably don’t think of it as being a health or medical problem. Studies from Stanford University, on the other hand, show that something like anger can change your well-being.
When cartoon book characters like the Incredible Hulk get angry, they change colours and often gain special power. In the real world, anger is less obvious and may be more dangerous. That’s why Professor Fred Luskin, founder of the Stanford Forgiveness Project and author of Forgive for Good, says holding on to anger and hatred can harm your physical and mental health. Two new studies seem to show the same idea.
The studies find that people who are able to forgive feel less stress, less back pain, and less depression(抑郁). They also have fewer headaches, lower blood pressure, and fewer problems on sleeping.
So it doesn’t matter if your anger is caused by the traffic or other things. Learning to let it go is important. Techniques such as deep breath or thought can help. Or just ask yourself if it’s worth hurting yourself by staying angry with someone else.
Forgiveness does not mean that you simply accept what happened and say it’s OK. Instead, it’s a way of making peace with yourself about what happened in the past.
The author of the passage tries to make his viewpoint clear__________.

A.by raising his own examples B.based on his own experience
C.by mentioning some studies D.by mentioning some typical patients

The example of the cartoon book characters is taken in the passage to__________.

A.support the viewpoint that anger and hatred harm physical and mental health
B.introduce a famous expert
C.let the reader know the different colours of cartoon faces
D.show how to control one’s temper

The underlined phrase“holding on to”in this passage possibly means“__________”.

A.People who are able to forgive feel less stress.
B.People who are able to forgive feel less depression.
C.People who are able to forgive have fewer problems on sleeping.

Like all other mothers who have small children, I, too, have to steal time-from my own children at home and from the children who know me as their teacher-just to put a few words down on paper. Many times I’ve wanted to write for myself, for other women, for my parents, for my husband, and especially for my children. I would have liked to leave a legacy (遗产) of words explaining what it has meant to have twins. One reason that there is not a great deal written about being a mother of a new baby is that there is seldom a moment to think of anything else but the baby’s needs.
With twins, I did not have a spare hand to write with.
Before my twins were born, my days were long and I had nothing to write about. After the twins’ birth I did have something to write about, but I found myself facing not a pen and paper but milk bottles.
Some nights, friends would visit. They would leave at 11 p.m., heading for bed, and for us the night was only just beginning. With twins, there is really no night. Each feeding lasts a long time. At 1:00 a.m., each of them would begin crying from hunger. At 4:00am, when I finally put them down, I felt exhausted.
Two years have passed since then and we’ve managed to live through it all. My days are still very full and even now there isn’t one evening when I put the twins down for the night that I don’t have a break. At last a little time for myself.
When did the writer have time but she didn’t feel like writing anything?

A.Before the birth of her twins.
B.When she faced bottles of milk.
C.After her friends visited her home.
D.When she had to think about the babies’ needs.

What does the writer mainly write about?

A.Her role as a wife. B.Her work as a writer.
C.Her experience as a mother. D.Her feeling as a woman.

Why did the writer say the night was just beginning (in the 4th paragraph)?

A.Because her friends left her house too late.
B.Because she started to take care of the twins even at night.
C.Because her babies often cried and she woke up.
D.Because she could not sleep till four in the morning.

This passage is probably from a(n) _________.

A.blog B.newspaper C.guidebook D.advertisement

What can we learn from the passage?

A.The writer was unhappy because of no time for writing.
B.The writer cared about her babies more than her own interests.
C.The writer hated to be a mother of twins.
D.The writer could steal a little time at night.

You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears. So even if you are alone when listening to our MP3 players, you shouldn’t turn it up too high.
Take Them Off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 off and put it away. Libraries, and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense to listen on your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.
Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you.
It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.
The underlined word “volume” in Paragraph Two probably means “_________.”

A.the type of music B.the amount of a sound
C.the length of a song D.the colour of an MP3 player

No one wants to listen to_________from others’ MP3 players.
A. a loud sound     B. sad stories
C. a long movie      D. the words of a song
43. We should turn down the music when we are alone because loud music_________.
A. is not enjoyable      B. makes us tired
C. is bad for MP3 players  D. hurts our ears
If we listen to our MP3 player at a play, _________.

A.the theatre won’t allow it B.the actors will get angry
C.others won’t hear the play well D.we will miss part of the play

We can take one earphone out when we _________.

A.show others the way B.talk to friends on the phone
C.watch a sporting event D.have dinner with our parents

The government-run command post in Tunis is staffed around the clock by military personnel, meteorologists and civilians. On the wall are maps, crisscrossed with brightly colors arrows that painstakingly track the fearsome path of the enemy.
What kind of invader gives rise to such high-level monitoring? Not man, not beast, but the lowly desert locust(蝗虫). In recent months, billions of the 3-inch-long winged warriors have descended on Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia, blackening the sky and eating up crops and vegetation. The insect invasion, the worst in 30 years, is already creating great destruction in the Middle East and is now treating southern Europe. The current crisis began in late 1985 near the Red Sea. Unusually rainy weather moistened the sands of the Sudan, making them ideal seedbed for the locust, which lays its eggs in the earth. The insect onslaught threatens to create yet another African famine. Each locust can eat its weight (not quite a tenth of an ounce) in vegetation every 24 hours. A good-size swarm of 50 billion insects eats up 100,000 tons of grass, trees and crops in a single night.
All ﹩150 million may be needed this year. The U.S. has provided two spraying planes and about 50,000 gal. of pesticide. The European Community has donated ﹩3.8 million in aid and the Soviet Union, Canada, Japan and China have provided chemical-spraying aircraft to help wipe out the pests. But relief efforts are hampered by the relative mildness of approved pesticides, which quickly lose their deadly punch and require frequent replications. The most effective locust killer dieldrin has been linked to cancer and is banned by many Western countries and some of the affected African nations. More than 5 million acres have been dusted with locust-killing chemicals; another 5 million will be treated by the end of June.
On May 30, representatives of Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Mauritania will meet in Algiers to discuss tactics to wipe out the ravenous swarms. The move is an important step, but whatever plan is devised, the locust plague promised to get worse before the insects can be brought under control.
The main idea of the first sentence in the passage is that ______.

A.the command post is stationed with people all the time.
B.the command post is crowded with people all the time.
C.there are clocks around the command post.
D.the clock in the command post is taken care of by the staff.

The favorable breeding ground for the locust is ______.

A.rich soil. B.wet land
C.paces covered crops and vegetation D.the Red Sea

People are alert at the threat of the locust because ______.

A.the insects are likely to create another African famine.
B.the insects may blacken the sky.
C.the number of the insects increases drastically.
D.the insects are gathering and moving in great speed.

Which of the following is true?

A.Once the pesticides are used, locust will die immediately.
B.Relief efforts are proved most fruitful due to the effectiveness of certain pesticides.
C.Dieldrin, the most effective locust killer, has been widely accepted in many countries.
D.Over 10 million acres of affected area will have been treated with locust-killing chemicals by the end of June.

The purpose for affected nations to meet in Algiers on May 30 is ______.

A.to devise anti-locust plans.
B.to wipe out the swarms in two years.
C.to call out for additional financial aid from other nations.
D.to bring the insects under control before the plague gets worse.

You can not see any object unless light from that object gets into your eyes. Some of the things you see give off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a lighted lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light. Such things are luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on them from the sun or some other luminous bodies. The moon, for example, does not give off any light of its own. It is non-luminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in our direction. So moon light is only second hand sunlight.
When you look at a book, it sends to your eyes some of the light which falls on it, and you see the book. If light could be kept out from where you are so that there would be no light for the book to reflect, then you could not see the book even with your eyes wide open.
Light travels so fast that the time in which it travels from the book you are reading to your eyes is so short as if there were no time at all. Light reaches us from the moon, which is about 380 000 kilometers away, in only a little more than a second.
You can see the book because_______.

A.your eyes are close to it B.it reflects some of the sunlight
C.it has light of its own D.your eyesight can get to it

The underlined word “luminous” means_______.

A.visible B.all colors C.giving off light D.sunlight

With the popularity of Harry Potter novels, the number of children applying to boarding schools has risen, many of them hoping to find their own version of Hogwarts. However, others have interpreted this trend as a reaction to longer working hours and the break up of more marriages. The boarding schools of fiction are presented as one long midnight feast with pillow fights making firm friendships. However, some people say the reality is children having more homesickness and a lack of individual attention. Modern boarding schools have done much to get rid of the image of the mass dormitories with 40 or more beds in one room, some going as far as providing private rooms with bathrooms. Similarly, they make great announcements for their academic advantage, particularly in light of the increase in exams, homework and university entrance requirements facing children wishing to succeed in the modern world.
Alongside these more conventional schools, two types of boarding schools have also become more popular recently. Sports academies and stage schools seek to cater for children with particular interests and talents, while so-called troubled-teens have been able to turn to a range of religious or wilderness schools to solve their problematic behavior.
Boarding schools allow children a safe space in which to accomplish greater control and independence over their daily lives. Teachers and staff can look after and support but they are unlikely to be over-protective. This can be a great preparation for university or for working away from home in later life as it provides an intermediate step between childhood and full independence.
However, Parents are a child’s most natural support and best role models to learn from. If they are separated from them for long periods of time, this may damage their relationship and leave the child feeling anxious or alone. Schools are unlikely to be able to copy the detailed knowledge of each individual child that a parent has and therefore cannot be as effective in supporting the child.
To sum up, boarding schools have both their advantages and disadvantages, so it is up to you to decide whether to send your children to boarding schools or not.
. What do we know from the passage?

A.More and more children go and visit Hogwarts on their own.
B.Pillow fights in boarding schools make firm friendships in reality.
C.More children want to go to boarding schools because of Harry Potter novels.
D.There aren’t special schools for the particularly talented children.

What kind of schools may be the most suitable for the so-called troubled-teens?

A.sports academies B.Wilderness schools
C.Conventional schools D.Stage schools

We learn from Paragraph 4 that __________.

A.teachers of boarding schools are the best examples for children to learn from
B.children can be more independent if they are separated from their parents
C.parents know their children better than teachers of boarding schools
D.schools are much more effective than parents in supporting children

Does your pet have a slim figure? According to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), about half of all dogs and nearly 60% of all indoor cats are overweight. Larry Kornegay, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, says he sees an overweight pet nearly every day, and unusually the owner is overweight. So talking about the topic can be touchy. “I talk about their pet’s health. Still, some clients take it personally.”
Here are some tips for pet weight loss:
See the vet(兽医). Have your vet put together a plan and treat any existing medical problems. Pain relief and diet changes may be required for arthritic(患关节炎的) pets, which will allow for exercise to at least begin.
Skip the crash diet (an attempt to lose weight quickly by strictly limiting the diet). A special weight-loss diet may be suggested. For example, look for the supplement which burns fat and builds muscle mass in foods. Never place any pet on a crash diet, especially cats, which can suffer a potentially fatal liver disease as a result. There’s a safe weight-loss drug for dogs you can ask your vet about.
Dine alone. “Cut out treats and resist temptation by keeping pets out of the room you’re dining in,” says Chicago vet Sheldon Rubin. You can buy low-calorie treats for dogs and cats. Rubin also recommends mini carrots, small apple slices or blueberries for dogs. What’s important is finding other ways, aside from food, to show your love. Play with your cat using an interactive toy, and take your dog for walks. Walks are great for bonding, and good for you. Studies show people are actually more willing to lose weight themselves if it also will help their pet.
Feed pets at special times. Pre-measure food carefully—don’t give them a larger meal than ever—and leave it in various places, so pets sniff it out and use the stairs. It’s fun, and it’s good exercise.
. The underlined word “touchy” in Paragraph 1 probably means__________

A.sensitive B.exciting C.moving D.pleasant

. What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Overweight people usually like overweight pets.
B.Pets’ weight is easier to lose than humans’.
C.Cats have a greater chance of serious liver disease.
D.Overweight people often ignore their pets’ weight.

Which of the following methods is healthy for your pets?

A.Providing them with mini carrots or blueberries.
B.Keeping them with you when you’re dining.
C.Supplying them with larger meals or drinks.
D.Leaving the food in a fixed place for your pets.

. What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.How to feed pets without a crash diet.
B.The importance of pet weight loss.
C.How to help pets lose weight.
D.The problems that pets will meet.

That“Monday morning feeling”could be a crushing pain in the chest which leaves you sweating and gasping for breath. Recent research from Germany and Italy shows that heart attacks are more common on Monday mornings and doctors blame the stress of returning to work after the weekend break.
The risk of having a heart attack on any given day should be one in seven, but a six-year study helped by researchers at the Free University of Berlin of more than 2, 600 Germans showed that the average person had a 20 percent higher chance of having a heart attack on a Monday than on any other day.
Working Germans are particularly not protected against attack, with a 33 percent higher risk at the beginning of the working week. Non-workers, by comparison, appear to be no more at risk on a Monday than any other day.
A study of 11, 000 Italians proved 8 a. m. on a Monday morning as the most stressful time for the heart, and both studies showed that Sunday is the least stressful day, with fewest heart attacks in both countries.
The finding could lead to a better understanding of what is the immediate cause of heart attacks, according to Dr Stefan Willich of the Free University. “We know a lot about long-term risk factors such as smoking and cholesterol(胆固醇)but we don’t know what actually causes heart attacks, so we can’t give clear advice on how to prevent them, ”he said.
Monday mornings have a double helping of stress for the working body as it makes a rapid change from sleep to activity, and from the relaxing weekend to the pressures of work.
“When people get up, their blood pressure and heart rate go up and there are hormonal(内分泌)changes in their bodies, ”Willich explained. “All these things can have an unfavorable effect in the blood system and increase the risk of a clot(血凝块)which will cause a heart attack.”
“When people return to work after a weekend off, the pace of their life changes. They have a higher workload, more stress, more anger and more physical activities,”said Willich.
Monday morning feeling, as this passage shows, ________.

A.is not as serious as people thought

C.is created by researchers in Germany and Italy
D.is harmful to working people in developed countries

C.people’s diet and lifestyle D.people’s nationalities

It can be learned from this passage that the heart attack has something to do with all the following EXCEPT ________.

A.blood pressure B.heart rate C.hormonal changes D.blood type

The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful, says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses (冲动) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom.
A single angry word has lost many a friend. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad. Keep cool, says George Herbert, for fierceness (狂怒) makes error a fault.
To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. Anger, says Pythagoras, brings with folly(愚蠢) and ends with regret. You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.
Self-control is man’s last greatest victory.
If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.

If you’re planning on traveling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
First of all, always check and double-check departure (起程) time. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10:50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.
The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency(货币) with you when you arrive in a country. This can be necessary if you are flying to a place few tourists normally visit. A few years ago I was sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I flew there from London via(经由)Dallas, with very little time to change planes in between. I arrived there at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead.
“Listen! I only take real money!” the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing (令人难堪的).
The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suit and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.
According to the passage, it’s obvious that______

A.The author learns some rules of traveling from his own experience.
B.The author doesn’t plan his trips or journeys carefully.
C.Englishmen like to wear heavy suits wherever they travel
D.The America taxi driver never travels to England.

What should you make sure first before setting off?

A.When you will leave. B.Where you will go.
C.How you will travel D.Whom you will go with.

According to the passage, the driver was angry because_______

A.the author gave him false money
B.the author did not give him the local currency
C.the author did not give him money
D.the author had no enough change

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The author tells people to choose warm places as their travel destinations.
B.You don’t have to take credit cards when traveling.
C.You should know more about the weather of the place you’ll visit.
D.You should take enough change when you travel to other countries.

What is the main idea of the passage?

A.A few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
B.Always check and double-check departure time.
C.It is important to have the local currency with you when you arrive in a country.
D.To find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave.
