Dear Jenny,
How’s it going? Are you busy with your study these days?
I’ve been back at school 1 nearly four weeks. I am very glad to tell you that great 2 have taken place in our school this term. First of all, we’re asked to “clear our plates(餐盘)” when having our meals and say 3 to wasting. Some of us used to order more than what we could eat. That was a big waste of food. Now we need to __4 the food we order. We should also stop wasting in some other ways. For example, we should turn off the lights when we 5 the classroom. And our school has opened up (开辟) some fields for us to learn how to grow vegetables. Each class is given a small garden and our class has decided to grow some tomatoes and beans(豆类)in our 6 time. I think that’ll be very interesting. Maybe I will be able to 7 you some beans we’ve grown by ourselves next time! What’s more, we have only two classes in the afternoon 8 we have more time for after-school activities. I’m one of the traffic safety(交通安全) volunteers in our school. After school, we take turns to go to the streets near school and ask people to __9 the traffic rules.
I think we are having a different school life now!
Please write back soon and tell 10 more about your school.
Yours,
Wang Wei

I used to abandon myself to despair. Last year my mother from stroke(中风)and had an operation on her brain. I felt my whole world turn upside down and I had no what I could do to help her to relieve her . Tears welled up in my eyes whenever I was alone.
Last month I precious watch, which was an 18-year-old birthday gift from my father. I could not fall asleep for a couple of nights because I felt about the loss.
There have been many like these in my life. I could never figure out how to deal with such tough things I read“If You Have a Lemon,Make a Lemonade" by American writer Dale Carnegie.
“When the wise man is handed a lemon,he says,‘What 48 can I get from this? How can I my situation? How can I turn this lemon into a lemonade?’”he wrote.
I suddenly that life is full of ups and downs,so I need to stay all the time.
Now when I think of my past,I wish I could have handled things .When my mother was fighting for ,I should have held her hands in mine, telling her things would get better instead of and crying.
Several weeks ago,I took part in a campus singing competition. I didn't a prize. If I had not this article,I would definitely have felt again. But instead,I smiled after the competition. I was happy that at least I had got some stage .
Life is not just a bed of roses. There are thorns(刺)as well, but these thorns help us become and strong. When life us a lemon, let's try to make a lemonade.

Dear Dad,
I was very upset when I received your letter. I knew you 46 not like my results, but I didn’t realize you and Mum were so 47 with me. This has made me 48 very carefully about myself, and now I 49 how silly I have been.
My poor 50 have come from my own 51 . Of course, I want to do my best. I want you and Mum to be proud 52 me, but somehow when I get to school I just can’t keep my 53 on the subject and I stop 54 the teacher. So many other things seem so much more 55 , but I know that I must not 56 the chance you and Mum have given me. If I don’t work very hard 57 the next few months, I am going to get 58 results. So I am going to study hard this summer. And I will show Mum anything 59 I can’t understand so that she can give me help.
I 60 you will allow me to play some basketball. I think I need some exercise, 61 _ I will control the time I 62 on it properly.
If you want me to stop meeting Cindy, I will — but there is 63 serious. We are just good friends, and she often helps me 64 my schoolwork.
Dad, I am really sorry I have made you angry. I’m going to try my best to 65 my study. I promise that I will make you proud of me soon.
Yours,
Jimmy

What is intelligence anyway? When I was in the army I 21 an intelligence test that all soldiers took, and, against 22 of 100, scored 160.No one at the base had ever seen a figure like that, and for two hours they made a big fuss over me.
All my life I've been registering scores like that, 23 I have the complacent(洋洋自得的) feeling that I'm highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so too. Actually, though, don't such scores simply mean that I am very good at answering the type of academic questions that are considered worthy of answers by people who 24 the intelligence tests - people with intellectual bents(天分) similar to mine?
For instance, I once had an auto-repair man, who, on these intelligence tests, could not 25 have scored more than 80,by my estimate. Yet, when anything went wrong with my car I hurried to him—and he always fixed it.
Well, then, suppose my auto—repair man 26 questions for some intelligence tests.By doing every one of them I'd prove myself a 27 .In a world where I have to work with my 28 ,I'd do poorly.
Consider my auto—repair man 29 .He had a habit of telling 30 .One time he said. “Doc, a deaf and dumb man 31 some nails.Having entered a store,he put two fingers together on the counter and made 32 movements with the other hand. The clerk brought him a hammer. He 33 his head and pointed to the two fingers he was hammering. The clerk 34 him some nails. He picked out the right size and left.Well,Doc,the 35 man who came in was blind. He wanted scissors. 36 do you suppose he asked for them?" I lifted my right hand and made scissoring movements with my first two fingers. He burst out laughing and said,“Why, you fool,he used his 37 and asked for them.” Then he said smugly, "I've been 38 that on all my customers today." "Did you catch many?" I asked. "Quite a few," he said, "but I knew 39 I'd catch you." "Why is that?" I asked. "Because you're so goddamned educated, Doc, I knew you couldn't be very 40 ." And I have an uneasy feeling that he had something there.

When I settled in Chicago,my new city seemed so big and unfriendly. Then I had a 26 problem and had to go to hospital for a 27 examination.
It seemed a small 28 compared to the one I was about to face ,but things started to go 29 right from the beginning , Not having a car or 30 the city, I was depending on a couple of buses to get me from A to B. 31 I’d left myself plenty of time, soon it was 32 I was going to be late, as I had mistakenly boarded a bus that was taking me in the 33 direction.
I 34 the bus and stood on the pavement not knowing what to do. I looked into the eyes of a 35 , who was trying to get past me. 36 , instead of moving on ,she stopped to ask if I was 37 . After I explained my 38 to her, she pointed to a bus stop across the street , where a bus would take me back into the city to my 39 . Sitting there waiting, I felt 40 that someone had been willing to help . 41 , hearing a horn (喇叭) nearby, I looked up to see a car with my new friend 42 at me to get in, She had returned to offer me a 43 to the hospital.
Such unexpected 44 from a passer-by was a lovely gift to receive. As I climbed out of the car at the hospital and turned to thank her, she smiled and told me not to lose 45 , for all things are possible.

It is interesting to observe the way in which children so often react against their parents’ ideas, while at the same time 36 their parent’s characteristics. This is to say, the children grow up to have different 37 from their parents, yet to have 38 personalities. There is a 39 going on in the toy world at present over 40 children should be encouraged to have war toys. I do not see any 41 in forbidding them when I think of the 42 of my friend Henry.
Henry is the son of strict parents who were against war. He was never 43 toy soldiers or guns as a 44.
Henry 45 and went into the army, becoming a first-class soldier and 46 all sorts of honors in the army. In that way he became the 47 of what his parents might have 48 of their son. And yet there is a gentleness about Henry which shows a 49 personality. His sympathies(同情) which I can see must have come from his 50. 51 doing things differently from our parents, a lot of the 52 gets passed on.
Parents have to 53 their children what they believe to be right; but it is not much your ideas that the children 54 your example. Perhaps the best way to teach one’s child gentleness is not to forbid toy guns, but to be 55 in one’s own everyday life.

As we all know “ The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” and “ 26 every successful man there is a woman.” Both these 27 mean the same things. Men rule the 28__ , but their wives rule them.

In the 1960s, the American women’s liberation 34 was started by women who don’t want to 35 behind successful men. They want to stand beside them, with the same 36__ for success. They don’t want to be told that certain jobs or 37__ are closed to them. They refused to work side by side with men who do the 38 work for higher pay.
In America, a liberation woman must be 39 of being a woman and have confidence in herself. If somebody says to her, “ You have come a long 40 , baby”, she will 41 and answer, “Not nearly as 42 as I am going to go, baby.”
On the other hand , this movement is quite 43 and many American women do not agree. 44__ it has already made some important 45__ in women’s lives.

I suspect that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our 36 , and especially if it’s given from the 37 . When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but 38 them. Just take them 39 . Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than 40 it.
One of my patients told me that when she 41 to tell her story, people often 42 to tell her that they had once had something just like that happen to her. Subtly her pain became a story about themselves. 43 she stopped talking to most people. It was just too 44 . We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the 45 of attention to ourselves. But when we listen, they know we care.
I have ever learned to 46 to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the tissues(纸巾) 47 I realized that passing a person a tissue may be just another way to shut them 48 , to take them out of their 49 of sadness and pain. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there 50 them.
This 51 thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been 52 since I was very young at school. I thought people listened only because they were too 53 to speak or did not know the answer. A loving silence often has far more 54 to connect than the most well-intentioned 55 .

I believe being honest is one of the greatest gifts. I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days, like 36 and straightforward. And it’s still what 37 a man a good citizen. This is my code(准则),and I try to live by.
I’ve been in the taxi business for thirty-five years, 38 there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxi drivers have to be rough and tumble(乱作一团) fellows to be able to take it in New York. You've got to be 39 to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day.
Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the 40 impression that they are bad. Taxi drivers are just like other people. Most of them will act as 41 fellows. Almost every week you read in the papers where a taxi driver 42 money or jewels or like that people leave in their 43 . If they weren't honest, you wouldn't be reading those stories in the papers. One time,I found an emerald(翡翠的)ring in my car. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of suitcases that day,so I went back to where I had 44 her off. It took me almost two days to wait for her in order to return her 45 to her. I didn't get as much as “thank you.” 46 ,I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she 47 .
I was born and brought up in Ireland until I was nineteen years old. I came to this country in 1913 where I 48 several jobs to earn a few dollars before joining the army in World War I. After being discharged(退伍),I bought my own car and have owned one ever since. It hasn’t been too easy 49 ,but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit 50 for a rainy day(一时之需). In all my years of driving a taxi,I have never had___51__ with the public, not even with drunks. Even if they get a little headstrong(顽固的) once in a while,I just agree with them and then they behave themselves.
People ask me about tips. As far as I know, 52 everyone will give you something, because most Americans are 53 generous. I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they 54 or not. I believe in God and try to be a good member of my parish(教区). I try to act toward others like I think God wants me to act. I have been trying this for a long time, and the 55 I try,the easier it gets.

At the edge of a forest, stood a big tree. Its branches spread out majestically (庄严地) and so did its roots. It people from the sun under its shady leaves, and provided to countless birds and other small creatures in its branches. It was very excited with activity all the time.
At the foot of the tree grew a little plant. The plant was tall, thin, graceful and easily , and tended to fall over at the of the slightest wind.
One day, the two neighbours were having a little chat.
“ Well, little one, ” said the tree to the plant, “ Why do you not plant your feet deeply in the ground, and raise your head in the air as I do?”
“ I see no need to do so,” the plant with a smile. “ , I think I may be safer this way.”
“ Safer!” sneered (讥讽) the tree. “ Are you that you’re safer than I am? Do you know how deep my roots are , how thick and strong my trunk is? two men hold hands they would not be able to surround my trunk. Who could possibly pull me out by the roots or my head to the ground?”
And the tree turned away from the plant in .
But the tree was to its words very soon. One evening a great hurricane in the region. It threw the trees off their roots and almost completely destroyed the forest. It uprooted the tree and it away with great force.
When the storm had passed, the villagers living nearby the damage. Strong trees that had once almost touched the sky, were now reduced to stumps (残根)or . The dead animals were found everywhere in the .
But there was one . The little plant. The plant had been moved from side to side under the hurricane, and bent completely. But when the hurricane ended, it sighed and stood upright again.
No trace remained of its powerful neighbour .

Everyone in business has been told that success is all about attracting and retaining(留住) customers. It sounds simple and achievable. But, 41 , words of wisdom are soon forgotten. Once companies have attracted customers they often 42 the second half of the story. In the excitement of beating off the competition, negotiating prices, securing orders, and delivering the product, managers 43 become carried away. They forget what they regard as the boring side of business--- 44 that the customer remains a customer.
45 to concentrate on retaining as well as attracting customers costs business huge amounts of money annually. It has been estimated that the 46 company loses between 10 and 30 percent of its customers every year. In constantly changing 47 , this is not surprising. What is surprising is the fact that few companies have any idea how many customers they have lost.
Only now are organizations beginning to wake up to these lost opportunities and calculate the 48 implications. 49 the number of customers a company loses can make a big 50 in its performance. Research in the US found that a five percent decrease in the number of defecting(流失的) customers led to 51 increases of between 25 and 85 percent.
In the US, Domino’s Pizza estimates that a regular customer is 52 more than five thousand dollars over ten years. A customer who receives a poor quality product or 53 on their first visit and 54 never returns, is losing the company thousands of dollars in 55 profits (more if you consider how many people they are likely to tell about their bad experience).
The logic behind cultivating customer 56 is impossible to deny. “In practice most companies’ marketing effort is focused on getting customers, with little attention paid to 57 them”, says Adrian Payne of Cornfield University’s School of Management. “Research suggests that there is a close relationship between retaining customers and making profits. 58 customers tend to buy more, are predictable and usually cost less to service than new customers. Furthermore, they tend to be less price 59 , and may provide free word-of-mouth advertising. Retaining customers also makes it 60 for competitors to enter a market or increase their share of a market.”

As a child, I was truly afraid of the dark and of getting lost; these fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange 26 things looked and sounded in my familiar room at night that 27 me so much. There was never total 28 , but a streetlight or passing car lights 29 clothes hung over a chair take on(呈现) the 30 of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my 31 , I saw the curtains seem to move when there was no 32 . A tiny sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the daylight. My 33 would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would 34 very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, 35 on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home .That was no 36 . After school, 37 , when all the buses were 38 up along the street, I was afraid that I’d get on the wrong one and be taken to some 39 neighborhood. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my 40 .
Perhaps one of the worst fears 41 all I had as a child was that of not being liked or 42 by others. Being popular was so important to me 43 , and the fear of not being liked was a 44 one.
One of the processes(过程) of growing up is being able to 45 and overcome(克服) our fears. Understanding the things that frightened us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.
