Brief History of the World’s Fair
World’s Fairs originated in the French tradition of national exhibitions, a tradition that ended with the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 held in Paris. It was soon followed by other national exhibitions in continental Europe, and finally came to London where the first real international exhibition was held.
Since their start in 1851, the character of world expositions has developed gradually. Three eras(年代)can be distinguished: the era of industrialization, the era of cultural exchange, and the era of nation branding.
Industrialization (1851–1938)
The first era could be called the era of industrialization and covered the period from 1851 to 1938. In these days, world expositions were especially focused on trade and famous for the display of technological inventions and advancements. World expositions were the platform where the state of the art in science and technology from around the world was brought together. Inventions such as the telephone were first presented during this era. An important part of the image of World’s Fairs stems from this first era.
Cultural exchange (1939–1991)
The 1939 New York World’s Fair and the 1949 Stockholm World’s Fair were different from the original focus of the expositions. From then on, World’s Fairs became more strongly based on a specific theme of cultural significance, and began to address issues of humankind. Technology and inventions remained important, but no longer as the principal subjects of the Fair. Cross-cultural dialogue and the exchange of solutions became defining elements of the expos. It was also during this time, specifically in the 1960s, that BIE organizers started calling World’s Fairs “Expo’s”.
Nation branding (1992–present)
From Expo’88 in Brisbane onwards, countries started to use World Expositions more widely and more strongly as a platform to improve their national images through their pavilions(展馆). Finland, Japan, Canada, France and Spain are cases in point. A large study by Tjaco Walvis called “Expo 2000 Hanover in Numbers” showed that improving national images was the primary participation goal for 73% of the countries at Expo 2000. In a world where a strong national image is a key asset(财产), pavilions became advertising campaigns, and the Expo a channel for nation branding. As well as cultural and symbolic reasons, organizing countries (and the cities and regions hosting them) also use the world exposition to brand themselves.
Future expositions
2017 will see a recognized exposition. Bidding may begin as early as 2012 for this smaller-sized exposition. Already, Edmonton, Alberta and Canada have voted to go on with the second stage of putting together a bid for Edmonton EXPO 2017. 2020 will see a registered category of exposition. Bidding may begin as early as 2011 for this larger sized exposition. There are citizen efforts in American cities with the intention of bringing a World’s Fair back to the United States.

SECTION A
Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information from the passage.
Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.
Supplying energy by nuclear power is a new trend in the recent years. However, it may be very dangerous.
First, the radioactive material must travel from its place of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely, road and rail. Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated areas.
Second, there is a problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It is impossible to make these waste non radioactive, so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the area. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.
Third, there may occur the danger of a leak or an explosion at the power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it doesn’t provide a serious objection to nuclear program. However, it can happen.
Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster is extremely high.

PART FOUR  WRITING
Section A
Directions: Read the following passage and complete the diagram by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each numbered blank.
Frederic Chopin is one of the most romantic figures in musical biography. He was dreamy and tender(温柔的). Chopin was born at a village near Warsaw, in Poland, on the 22nd of February 1810.
In his early years Chopin showed himself very interested in music. He was only nine when he made his first public appearance. Chopin had been studying with Elsner, the director of Warsaw Conservatoire, for some time when his father thought it would be good for him to have a little tour before settling down to the practice of his profession. Thus a tour was arranged, Berlin was the first place visited where he heard a lot of music. And then came an important visit to “the beautiful musical Vienna.” There he was surrounded with requests to play in public. After Vienna, he visited Prague and Dresden, where he met more musical celebrities.
It was Paris where he decided to perfect his technique that Chopin finally settled in. The performance came off in 1832, and though the audience was small the artistic success was great. Prince Radziwill took him to a party at the Rothsehilds. He was asked to play, and he played so beautifully that he was drowned with praise. Thus was the young Pole(波兰人)launched on his career of popularity in Paris.
Pauter says truly that Chopin never in his life wrote a bar of music that contained an inferior idea. And there was nothing vulgar (粗俗的) about himself. Nobody knew him better than George Sand. She says, “Gentle, sensitive, and very lovely, he united the charm of adolescence with sincerity of a more mature age.”

When Carla Fisher and her husband announced plans to travel the globe with their young daughters for a year, some friends called them crazy.
Seven years later, with wonderful memories and a book documenting their world travel, the Fishers now seem like global trailblazers (先驱者).
“It’s really encouraging to hear that many other people want to educate their kids in that manner,” said Fisher.
Some parents are trying to raise knowledgeable and open-minded “world citizens”. Others want to give their children the skills they’ll need to compete globally.
“There is a huge amount of interest in spending time abroad at all stages of life and increasingly, as a family with children,” said Maya Frost, author of “The New Global Student…”. She knows American families in every corner of the globe who have made that choice.
“There’s so much more to education than school,” said Tessa Hill, who recently returned to her Houston-area home, after driving her family across North and Central America and Europe in a motor home for 13 months. “World travel is an education in people, cultures, language, travel skills, street smarts and in how lucky we are to live in the United States.”
When Hill and her husband began considering extended global travel, their middle child, Charles, 13, was surprised. “My first reaction was ‘well, are we really going to do this?’” Charles said. “But it did sound like great fun.”
Charles said missing his friends was the hardest part. He stayed in touch via e-mail and made some new friends along the way, playing soccer with kids in France and learning about rugby from youths in Ireland.
“I’d definitely recommend this to other kids,” Charles said. “It was such a great opportunity to see different countries and learn geography a different way.”
To make re-entry smoother, most school officials prefer that families work out an educational plan before they leave town.
“It sounds out-of-date, but it really opens up your mind and your eyes to the world,” said Robbin Goodman, 17, a senior student who spent his junior year skateboarding across Beijing, China, when he wasn’t studying Chinese history and other core subjects.
Had he not already taken a school-sponsored spring break trip with his mom to China in 2007, Robbin said he probably would not have been able to convince his parents to let him go alone for a year. “I knew I would learn Chinese and all that, but my goal was to have a great time,” Robbin said.
“The biggest problem for those seriously considering going abroad is dealing with those who are against the idea,” said Frost.
“They gain the ability to take risks and to have confidence in themselves,” said Liz Pearlstein, founder of a global education consulting firm. “When we came home from London, my daughter, who had been painfully shy before we left, said ‘Mom, now I know there’s nothing I can’t do.’”
No one knows exactly how many American families are choosing the global education path,
but global education consultants say a growing number of parents are traveling for a year or more with their children.

第三部分任务型阅读(满分10分)
When you do business online, remember one of the most important factors in online success is list building. No matter what goals you’re seeking with your online activities, building a good contact list is vital for a successful outcome. List building plays a major role in developing good relationships with your site’s customers, and visitors. It can be used to get more sales for your site or business. For these reasons contact building should be high on your list when you’re marketing or promoting on the web. Fortunately, list building is an easy process that any site or webmaster can quickly set up as long as you understand two simple elements. To be really successful, your list building must combine these two key elements. Without these you will probably find building your contact list difficult and slow going. So it is worth your while to fully understand these two factors in your list building.
Value-It should offer important information, quality content, special deals / discounts, and more importantly, it should offer a valuable relationship or connection to an expert in the subject area of the list.
Subscribers (订户) must benefit from joining your list. If you’re building a list, just write down all the benefits someone would receive from joining your site or list, including receiving important information, getting special valuable content, receiving special deals / discounts, getting training videos and getting timely announcements or news. Don’t forget there may also be a psychological reason for joining your list-many people like being part of a group or membership site. It’s human nature. Everybody likes to feel included.
Free whatever you offer-make sure it is Free. The quickest way to build any list is to give away free valuable content, information, videos, reports, e-books, discounts, prizes... everybody loves a free gift. Just make them an offer they can’t refuse. This has more to do with the nature of your gift and the kind of contacts you’re building-giving away free buying guides on how to purchase real estate, fast cars, LCD TVs, laptops... will definitely attract the right “buying customer”. If you’re into selling, you just have to adjust your marketing to combine the free element correctly. In addition, giving away something free is the first step in starting an ongoing relationship with your subscribers. It gets the ball rolling.

There is an English saying: “laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously.     71 __ They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and muscles.     72

第三部分任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
Fairview Elementary School, Modesto, California, with some 1,000 students from kindergarten through sixth grade (about 80 percent of them Latino), has long suffering from discipline problems, poor test scores, and a near total lack of parental involvement. The difficulties aren't surprising given that many of the parents -- immigrants who work on farms or in factories -- speak little or no English.
Since 2002, Fairview Elementary School has been a First Amendment School, one of 97 developed across the country by the First Amendment Center. The idea behind the five-year-old program: To keep America strong, children must be trained to respect many points of view, weigh complex issues, and understand the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution(宪法) .As students learn good citizenship, the theory goes, they'll develop the skills and attitude to do well academically.
Fairview students enjoy "freedoms" other kids might envy (they voted to abolish school uniforms, for example). But the children don't just exercise rights. They also accept such responsibilities as speaking up during class discussions, and keeping the school clean and safe (Fairview is rated the cleanest of 33 schools in its district). In one departure from tradition, there's no hand-raising in class. "Instead," says teacher Deborah Supnet, "we teach them to listen for when the other child stops talking," Call it an exercise in respect.
