A middle school student from Milton, Wash., stopped a potentially disastrous situation on Monday morning when he guided his school bus safely off the road after the driver had a medical emergency, KOMO News reports.
Thirteen-year-old Jeremy Wuitschick was on the bus to Surprise Lake Middle School when he noticed that something was wrong.
“I knew something was wrong,” the seventh grader said. “The bus driver…looked funny. His eyes were bulging(凸出), he was sitting back and his hands were waving around.”
Immediately, Wuitschick and another seventh grade student -- Johnny Wood -- leapt out of their seats and rushed to the front of the bus. Grabbing the wheel, Wuitschick steered(控制)the vehicle, preventing it from crashing off the road; while Wood, who knows CPR, tried chest compressions on the driver who had become unconscious.
“It was pretty scary,” said Wuitschick, who then took the key out of the bus, making the bus -- with 15 other middle school students in it -- stop.
“I’ll tell you, I’ll give the kid credit for fast thinking. He did the right thing and we’re going to do something for him. The kid definitely deserves credit,” Milton Police Chief Bill Rhodes said
When asked what made him to come forward to help, Wuitschick said he had acted “on instinct(本能),” adding that a “book about superheroes” had inspired him to turn the vehicle's engine off.
He also said that he knows how to drive because his mother lets him back the car out of the driveway when he washes it -- but that, until now, it had been his little secret.
The 43-year-old bus driver, whose name has not been released, was taken to the hospital. According to ABC News, his condition has been described as “grave.” No one else was hurt.

At least 36 people have been killed and another 42 people have been injured in a stampede that broke out during a New Year Eve celebration in downtown Shanghai, which may have been caused by the crowd rushing to grab fake money thrown from the balcony of a building.
Survivors described the stampede as "horrible and hellish."
A woman said she covered two kids in front of her with her arms in the chaos. Her son followed her. Dirty shoe prints covered her son's clothes when the 12-year-old boy came to safety.
"The crowd was in a panic. We stood in the crowd, feeling squeezed and almost out of breath," a boy said. "Some yelled for help, but the noise was too loud."
Other survivors said police rushed to the scene and tried to pull out people who were stuck, but without much success.
The local authorities said that one of the victims was a female student from the Shanghai-based Fudan University. The student, surnamed Du from Yunnan Province, was fatally injured during the incident and died later in the hospital.
"The chaos lasted several minutes, and then some of the injured were seen being carried out of the crowd," Yu said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday demanded an immediate investigation into the cause of the stampede and urged prevention of such incidents in the future.
The city has set up a working team for rescue operations to deal with the aftermath.
Fatal incidents like this one were not rare in China, the world's most populous country. Stampedes in the past were mainly due to safety measures.
In September 2014, six students were killed in a stampede at a primary school in Yunnan Province after a stairway was blocked. In January 2014, a mosque(清真寺) stampede killed 14 people and injured another 10 in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. In 2004, a stampede on a bridge in suburban Beijing killed 37 during a local lantern festival.

He  seems  an  unlikely  hero,  especially  one  that  would  save  a  kid  from  the  jaws  of  a  wild  cougar  (美洲豹)  .
Shen  Huigang  is  just  now  getting  recognition  for  his  bravery  in  fighting  off  a  cougar  on  Vancouver  Island,  Canada,  during  a  family  outing  on  Aug  .30.
Shen,  also  known  as  Ian,  was  then  an  exchange  student  at  Kwantlen  Polytechnic  University  enjoying  the  afternoon  on  a  beach  near  Ucluelet,  a  small  town  on  the  edge  of  the  Pacific  Ocean.
With  him  was  a  friend,  Myles  Hagar,  and  Hagar’s  two  grandchildren.
Silently  and  suddenly  a  cougar  appeared  out  of  nowhere.
By  the  time  the  two  adults  spotted  the  cat,  believed  to  be  young  but  still  weighing  30  to  35  kilograms,  it  already  had  the  head  of  18-month  old  Julien  in  its  mouth.  Instinctively﹙本能地﹚,  the  young  man  gestured  as  if  he  were  ready  for  a  fight,  and  tried  to  scare  the  beast  off  with  the  bag  in  his  hands.
On  hearing  the  noise  Shen  made,  the  animal  dropped  the  kid  and  Hagar  grabbed  his  grandson  from  the  cougar’s  jaws.  Shen  and  Hagar  gradually  chased  the  animal  back  into  the  woods.
“We  also  moved  slowly  to  our  vehicle,  as  we  waved  our  fists  and  bags,  pretending  we  wanted  to  fight  with  it,”  Shen  said.  “The  vehicle  wasn’t  far  away  but  it  felt  like  it  took  us  a  century  to  travel  the  short  journey.”
“Any  hesitation,  at  any  moment,  even  a  second  delay,  would  have  resulted  in  certain  death  for  Julien.  The  cougar  was  just  about  to  break  his  neck  and  carry  him  away  to  be  eaten  in  the  forest.”  Hagar  said.  Julien  has  since  made  a  full  recovery.
Parks  Canada  spokeswoman  Arlene  Armstrong  told  the  National  Post  newspaper  of  Canada  in  an  interview  in  August.  “The  two  men  acted  properly  by  maintaining  eye  contact  with  the  big  cat  and  aggressively  scaring  it  off.”

Parent involvement is critical in helping with children’s development and achievement and in preventing and correcting educational and developmental problems.
The degree to which American parents are involved in their children’s schools is often surprising to people of other countries. Most schools have organizations consisting of both parents and teachers (usually called P.T.A from the initials of the “Parent-Teacher Association”). They meet together regularly to discuss and consult on various matters related to the school-curriculum, budgets, faculty, salaries, libraries facilities, or whatever it may be.
Mothers often volunteer to help with classroom or after-school activities. They sometimes make costumes for plays or play the piano or assist a teacher on a class field trip. Some of them give regular time, under the direction of the teacher, in working with tutoring children in the classroom.
In good schools a real effort is made to have both the home and the school work together for the child’s well-being. You will generally find teachers eager to talk with you about any problems concerning your child-although the larger the school, the less likely this is to happen. When the size permits, there are often scheduled appointments so that parents can meet privately with one or more of their child’s teachers to discuss his particular problems or progress. You will be sent notices of meetings or programs to which you are invited.
Both mothers and father are expected to attend such meetings and to show their interest in the school. You may be invited to a “Parents’ Day”, where you follow a child’s schedule through a full day of classes. This is inspiring and enjoyable for most parents.
School activities provide a good way to meet your neighbors and to make friends in the community. Since Americans enjoy meeting people from other countries, you will probably find your national background a help rather than a disadvantage in getting to know others. This is true even if you are having trouble with the language.
Successful parent involvement benefits parents, children and teachers and, therefore, has significant influence on children’s education.

What role can the organization “P.T.A” play at school? (no more than 7 words)
How do mothers volunteer to do in the classroom or after-school activities? (no more than 6 words)

Making friends can be difficult, especially these days with so many peer pressures. If you want to develop a more pleasing personality and make friends, become genuinely(真正地) interested in other people and show kindness. You may be wearing the latest designer label clothes, the hottest brand shoes and the coolest jewelry, but if you display sourness and selfishness you’ll have a battle ahead of you to make good friends.
Smile...smile and continue to smile. It costs nothing, enriches those who receive it, happens in a flash but the memory lasts forever;it creates happiness in the home and classroom. A smile can not be bought, begged or borrowed,it comes from the heart. If you want other people to like you, make the other persons feel important, and do it sincerely!
Choose your friends carefully. If others try to persuade you to smoke, take drugs, steal, gamble, fight etc...dare to say NO. Doing the wrong thing is the quickest way to lose friends, especially honest, good and upright friends.
Being mentally strong is not always easy but let me assure you that the more you practise it, the easier it becomes. Soon those who thought they were trendy will want to dress like you, talk like you and be with you because you have a personality which is different. People like being different! By being an individual with your own personality you can achieve the very best experiences in your life. You may not ever have many friends but let me tell you that it is better to have one good friend than ten dishonest friends who will stab you in the back at the very first opportunity that arises.

With a good shopping position and the right amount of money, any educated person ought to be able to make a living out of a bookshop. It is not a difficult trade to learn and the large chain-stores can never force the small bookseller out of existence as they have done to the corner shop. But the hours of work are very long---I was only doing a part-time job, but my boss put in a seventy---hour week, besides regular journeys out of shopping hours to buy books.
The real reason why I should not like to be back in the book trade for life, however, is that while I was in it I lost my love of books. A bookseller cannot always tell the truth about his books, and that gives him a dislike for them. There was a time when I really did love books---loved the sight and smell and feel of them---if they were fifty or more years old, that is. Nothing pleased me quite so much as to buy a bargain lot of them on sale for several pounds. There is a peculiar flavour(独特的味道)about the unexpected books you pick up in that kind of collection: little-known eighteenth-century poets, or out-of-date geography books. For occasional reading---in your bath, for example, or late at night when you are too tired to go to bed---there is nothing as good as a very old picture story-book.
But as soon as I went to work in the bookshop I stopped buying books. Seen in a mass, five or ten thousand at a time, books were dull and even a little tiresome. Nowadays I do buy one occasionally, but only if it is a book that I want to read and can’t be borrowed easily, and I never buy rubbish.
List two conditions that are necessary to run a bookshop. (No more than 9 words)

Basic Math introduces students to the basic concepts of mathematics, as well as the fundamentals of more tricky areas. These 30 fantastic lectures are designed to provide students with an understanding of arithmetic and to prepare them for Algebra(代数) and beyond.
The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect of arithmetic. They also look into exponents(指数), the order of operations, and square roots. In addition to learning how to perform various mathematical operations, students discover why these operations work, how a particular mathematical topic relates to other branches of mathematics, and how these operations can be used practically.
Basic Math starts from the relatively easier concepts and gradually moves on to the more troublesome ones, so as to allow for steady and sure understanding of the material by students. The lectures offer students the chance to “make sense” of mathematical knowledge that may have seemed so frightening. They also help students prepare for college mathematics and overcome their anxiety about this amazing—and completely understandable—field of study.
By the conclusion of the course, students will have improved their understanding of basic math. They will be able to clear away the mystery of mathematics and face their studies with more confidence than they ever imagined. In addition, they will strengthen their ability to accept new and exciting mathematical challenges.

What would Barbie look like if she were average?
According to US artist Nickolay Lamm, she would be a brunette with a rounded face and a much thicker waist.
Frustrated with the unrealistic beauty standards of Barbie and her friends, Lamm took data from Disease Control and Prevention about an average 19-year-old American woman, who is about 163 cm tall, with a 84-cm waist. With those measurements, Lamm created a doll.
The doll-s tagline (口号)is “Average is beautiful.”
“I think a realistic-size doll is important because when I look at current dolls on the market, they all look like supermodels," the artist told APF.  “I just had the impression that the wall of supermodels suggests that something is wrong with you if you don-t look like one.  So I created an alternative to suggest that it’s OK to look like a normal person."
The Lammily dolls, which are 27 cm tall, have been on sale since last month.
Lammily also has other features. Unlike Barbie and her friends, whose pointed legs would force her to walk on all fours if she were real, Lammily has articulated(枢接的) joints – able to walk, run, and play.  The doll can even be put in a yoga position.
What’s more, the Lammily dolls include a sticker package that can help to add real-life marks to the dolls, including freckles, acne, moles, and tattoos.
“You can also add minor cuts and bruises, like ones you'd get from falling down while snowboarding," Lamm told NBC.
“I feel that, right now.  dolls are very perfect looking,  when,  in real life,  few of us have perfect skin," Lamm told The Huffington Post. “Things like pimples are a natural part of who we are. So, why not give dolls a real treatment?"
As The Huffington. Post said, "Getting kids used to the idea that these things are completely normal and not 6flaws'(缺陷) to be ashamed of can only be a good thing."

Fast food and too much TV time should not take all the blame for the weight problems. A group of researchers say that a number of aspects of modern living from lack of sleep to environmental chemicals and to living with air conditioning—may be closely related to the weight problems of many people.
Lack of sleep is one of factors. Researches in animals and humans suggest that a lack of sleep over a long time can increase appetite. Studies also show that many adults and children are sleeping less than they used to. In recent decades, adults have gone from sleeping for all average of nine hours to about seven hours.
There is also evidence that industrial chemicals may increase body fat. These chemicals, which are used in products, change hormonal(荷尔蒙的) activity when they get into the body. Studies suggest that people have been getting more and more of these chemicals through the food chain in recent decades.
Another factor that may be making people overweight is air conditioning. The body burns calories when forced to eat less in hot and wet weather, but air conditioning makes it unnecessary for the body to make any adjustment.
Researchers also list other possible risk factors for overweight, including more older mothers, whose children may become overweight more easily; a number of medicines which can lead to weight gain; and fewer people who smoke, since people often gain weight when they stop smoking because nicotine can make people eat less.
No one is suggesting that people should stop working and sleep more, or keep smoking. When it comes to saying any person’s weight, what really matters is how much they eat and how much of the food they use every day. That means diet and exercise are still the key.

Halloween falls on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. Halloween dates back to over 2000 years ago.
The American tradition of "trick-or-treating" probably dates back to the early All Souls' Day marches in England. During the festivities, poor people would beg for food and families would give them pastries called "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray(祈祷)for the family's dead relatives.
The act of giving out soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for homeless ghosts. The practice was finally taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given sweets, food, and money.
The tradition of dressing in costume(服饰)for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies were often not enough because people were afraid of the darkness and would stay at home without doing businesses.
On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would meet with ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for their fellows(同伴).
On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to satisfy the ghosts and prevent them from trying to enter their houses.
Halloween falling on October 31st , has a history of more than 2,000 years.
During Halloween in America, poor people would be given food like pastries called “soul cakes” by rich family relatives.
Children would be treated to sweets and food while visiting the houses in their neighborhood on Halloween.
On Halloween, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark in order to avoid being recognized by their fellows.
Halloween is a day honoring the dead and respecting the old.

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, is the story of a young woman’s struggle to find happiness. As a child, Jane is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her parents die. Her aunt and cousins are very cruel to her. Then, Jane is sent to Lowood, a school for poor children. Here, she experiences more cruelty. The students do not get enough food to eat and they have to wear old, ugly clothes. At Lowood, Jane makes a good friend, Helen Burns, who is very kind and patient. She believes that it is better to do without the things you want. Even though Jane loves Helen, she cannot agree with her. Jane believes that both rich and powerful people and poor people deserve the same treatment.
Jane leaves Lowood years later and becomes the private teacher of the daughter of Mr. Rochester, who is a very rich man. Jane is still not completely satisfied with her life because she realizes that women do not have the freedom to choose what they want to do—she has become a teacher because she has no other choice.

For many times, you have got the feeling that a white guy who is 20 looks like 30. And they go bald faster too. Though there are also some who look really young for their age, white people generally look older!
Why do they look older? I think it’s because of both genes and lifestyle. White people are generally taller, which makes them appear older. Moreover, they like to be sunburnt, which ages and damages the skin and causes wrinkles. A 15-year-old white girl is addicted to sunbeds and has been using them for 3 years – and her skin is literally baked and dermatologists (皮肤科医生) say that she has the skin of a 35-year-old!
In fact, aging is based little on race, as it is on diet, exercise, and other lifestyle choices. We tend to eat more skin-friendly food, like fish and beans, but white people do not eat them so much. Makeup is bad for skin and ages it quicker too, and generally, white people start to wear it much younger and use a lot of it. Some even start to experiment with makeup at about 8 or 9 and wear makeup properly at around 12 to 14. Some white celebrities might look a little younger due to their makeup, but still they look older than their age.

The people of Dubai have extended their reach-into the sky. In January, the world’s tallest building opened there. The skyscraper, called the Buji Khalifa, is 162 stories high, with 60-mile views from the top of the tower. At 2,717 feet, the structure stands more than 1,000 feet taller than the last tallest building, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan.
After five years of construction, the Buji Khalifa opened with a party. But now the tower is getting down to business. The skyscraper has 37 floors of office space and 1,000 apartments. It will house the world’s largest mall. The owners hope that eventually more than 12,000 people will live and work in the 6 million square feet inside the building.
The Buji Khalifa was originally named the Buji Dubai, or Dubai Tower, after the region where it was built. Dubai is a sheikdom (酋长国) which is part of the United Arab Emirates. Recently, Dubai needed a loan. Sheik Khalifa, President of the United Arab Emirates, helped out. Buji Dubai was renamed Buji Khalifa in his honor.
The towering structure has broken a number of records besides the record for height. It has the world’s highest swimming pool, on the 123rd floor. It also has the world’s highest outdoor observation deck: Visitors can stand in the open air 124 stories above ground. Fifty-four elevators race up and down, going as fast as 40 miles an hour. Should the elevators stop working, 3,000 stairs go from top to bottom. And when it’s time to clean the windows, 36 workers will spend about three months washing them.
Reaching half a mile into the sky, the Buji Khalifa soars over even the world’s other highest skyscrapers. Its height outstrips the Taipei 101 by 60 stories. It stands more than 1,100 feet taller than China’s Shanghai World Financial Center. And Dubai’s new tower dwarfs one of the most famous skyscrapers of all: it stands more than twice as high as the Empire State Building in New York City, the world’s tallest building for more than 40 years.

My grandmother was a master gardener that could make anything bloom. Even me.
She spent most of her life living on a farm in the mountains of North Caroline, where she got married, raised four children, and watched the changing of the seasons. When I was 12 years old, my dad gave up working downtown and moved back to the farm to turn to gardening. I visited on weekends to keep them company.
Every time my farm chores were done, I was free to climb the mountain, singing songs and gathering flowers. Sometimes the plants scratched me. My grandmother would say: “Beauty has a price. I hope it was worth it.” I would say, “Yes, ma’am. It was.” Then I’d scratch some more. At dusk, we’d sort the flowers and make bouquets(花束): One for the living room, one for the kitchen, and three for the bedrooms.
Even then as a child, I knew that what I desired most from my grandmother was not her flowers but her time. She has been gone for decades, but sometimes when I reach down to pick a flower or pull a weed, I see her hand, not mine. I thought I’d grow up to be a gardener as well. I informed myself, someday, when my children had children,I would be a gardening grandma. Then the grandbabies started showing up, and I discovered I would much rather chase after them than go digging.
The truth is, I’m no gardener. I’m a picker, not a planter. I don’t need to plant a garden. My children are my flowers. They delight me and complete me with a beauty that is worth any price.
My grandmother and I differ in lots of ways, but from her, I do learn what a grandmother means. I also learn that I need attend to my grandbabies with time and water them with love. I hope that, one day, when they hold their first grandchild, they might see my hand.
