[4] In 1973, kidnappers took his 16-year-old grandson, and demanded a large amount of money for his safe return. Getty’s son asked his father for money to save his child. But Getty refused. The kidnappers were merciless and Getty’s son made repeated requests for help from his father. Finally, Getty agreed to lend the money, but at 4 percent interest.
[5] Getty started a museum at his home Malibu, California. He bought many important and beautiful pieces of art for the museum. When Getty died in 1976, the value of the collection in the museum was $1 billion. He left all his money to the museum. After his death, the museum grew in size. Today it is one of the most important museums in the United States. What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an icecream taster?
Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste icecream. Just ask John Harrison, an "Official Taste Tester" for the past few years. Testing helps manufacturers (制造商) to be sure of a product's quality. During his career, Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet icecream——as well as for developing over 75 flavors (味道). Some people think that it would be easy to do this job, after all, you just have to like icecream, right? No, there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or foodscience degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this "cool" field.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 icecream samples. He lets the icecream warm up to about 12℃. Harrison explains, "You get more flavor from warmer icecream, which is why some kids like to stir(搅拌)it, creating icecream soup."
While the icecream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. "Tasting begins with the eyes," he explains. He checks to see if the icecream is attractive and asks himself, "Does the product have the color expected from that flavor?" Next it's time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of icecream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy-working "cool".

(2) The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious.Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the time you are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go.Another advantage is that you have to speak the language if you are with other people.
(3)On the other hand, there are also advantages of staying at home to study. You don’t have to make big changes to your life.As well as this, it is also a lot cheaper than going to Britain.
(4)So I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend some time in the UK.But this is not possible for most people, so the most important thing to do in this situation is to catch your opportunities: to speak only English in class and to try to use English whenever possible outside the class.

[1] What is fear of money ? And who are the people who suffer from it ? If it’s the first time you’re hearing about this kind of condition, this is the chance for you to learn more.
[2] Fear of money is a fear of wealth usually brought about by a past experience. Some people develop this fear when they find themselves buried in debt and without a clue on how to overcome it.
[3] There are a lot of different factors that contribute to this phenomenon.. If you want to learn how to overcome it, read on.
[4] Be Conscious About Your Fear. The first step to overcoming fear of money is proper awareness. All too often, we fear what we don’t understand. The same principle applies when it comes to money. If you know how much debt you’ve really accumulated, you at least know what you’re dealing with.
[5] Talk To Others About It. If you want to overcome your fear of money, why not talk about it with friends and family ? You don’t want to broadcast every little detail about your financial matters, but you do need to let out a little bit of steam and perhaps, realize that you’re not the only one having issues.
[6] Make Money Decisions Regularly. If you really want to get over your fear of money, you have to be more hands-on. So why don’t you make money decisions from time to time ? Decide how much you want to save up this year. Decide where you want to invest your money in the next few months. Of course, you have to make careful and calculated decisions.
[7] Fear of money is easier to conquer with the right amount of knowledge and determination. Don’t be frightened by money. Fear is but a state of mind.

People in several American states may be surprised to see cars on city streets without a driver. Experimental driverless vehicles now are legal in Florida, Nevada and California. They are pointing the way to a future that is not far down the road. The high-tech company Google has a number of self-driving cars, which had covered 480,000 kilometers by August. Volvo is among the companies doing road tests and says it plans to sell driverless cars by 2020.
In September, California Governor Jerry Brown signed an act to allow autonomous vehicles on the roads of his state. “Today we’re looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow’s reality—the driverless car.” The technology for these cars includes cameras, radar and motion sensors. The systems have been improved through competitions sponsored by the US government agency DARPA. Engineer Richard Mason of the Rand Corporation helped design driverless vehicles for DARPA challenge races.
“Cars have become much more fuel-efficient, and new electronic features are making Hondas safer,” said Angie Nucci of Honda America. “A camera on the passenger-side mirror actually engaged on your guiding screen so you can safely change lanes.” Other safety features include warning systems on the front and the sides of the cars. These systems help drivers, but don’t replace them. Curator Leslie Kendall of the Petersen Automotive Museum said autonomous cars will make the high ways safer.
“By taking out drivers, you also remove most risks of an accident,” Kendall said. He said consumers, however, may be unwilling to lose control. “It may take them time to come to realize that the technology is indeed reliable, but it will have to prove itself first.”
Mason said the technology already works and the biggest challenge now is getting down the cost for driverless vehicles from hundreds of thousands of dollars to something more affordable. He said this will happen                             .

Everyone suffers from stress in modern society. And the stress we suffer does harm to our bodies and minds. In recent studies, experts have determined that heart disease is linked to anger and anger is linked to mental stress.
Managing your anger and attitude is significant to heart health, and relaxation can help you manage stress. Another reason why we need to relax, apart from lowering blood pressure in people and decreasing the chances of a stroke or a heart attack, is because relaxation gives the immune system time to recover and function more efficiently.
Breathing is one of the easiest methods to relax. Breathing influences almost all aspects of us. It affects our mind, our moods and our body. Simply focus on your breathing, and after some time you can feel its effects right away.
Yoga is also another method for relaxation and may also have similar effects like acupuncture. In another study, participants were subjected to several minutes of mental stress. Then they were subjected to various relaxation techniques, such as listening to nature sounds or classical music. Only those who did Yoga significantly reduced the time it took for their blood pressures to go back to normal. Yoga is a form of progressive relaxation.
One great way of relaxation is getting a massage. There are several types of massage that also give different levels of relaxation. To gain full relaxation, you need the help of a professional therapist (按摩师).
Drugs are extreme alternatives to relaxation. They are sometimes not safe and are not effective like the other relaxation methods. This method is only used by trained medical professionals on their patients.
These relaxation techniques are just some of the ways you can achieve relaxation. Relaxation can really be of good use once a relaxation technique is regularly built into your lifestyle. Choose a technique that you believe you can do regularly.

【1】Although many Chinese students say they have a good knowledge of English grammar, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to Chinese students, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain poor! I would suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
【2】First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
【3】Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for you.
【4】Third, no enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that is heard is necessary for you to start speaking.
【5】Fourth, most Chinese students are inactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their spoken English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

[1] Bird-watching is a fun, safe and relatively inexpensive way to enjoy the outdoors with yourself, friends or family. A good pair of binoculars(双筒望远镜) is a must and preferably a good book on birding to go along with it. You can get a good pair of binoculars for as little as $70 or spend as much as $1000 for a pair. If you’re just starting out, go with a good and reasonably inexpensive pair to get started. I prefer a lighter-weight pair of binoculars for a little more money. With the constant movement of your head and neck to observe birds, it’s best to go with a lightweight pair to ease the strain on your neck.
[2] A good book on birding is in order as well. Stokes Field Guide to Birds is ideal because all the entries are actual photographs of the birds that you are searching for, and not artists’ drawings which are sometimes not quite as accurate. I have several books on birding, including Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America, and Roger Tory Petersen’s Field Guide to Birds which I would recommend as well.
[3] Last but not least, find a park, nature center, or wildlife sanctuary (庇护所) to enjoy your bird-watching in. There are tens of thousands of places such as these to enjoy your newly-found hobby in. Some places charge a fee; most places don’t require any kind of charges. It’s entirely up to you to decide where you want to go. Check your local government buildings, recreational departments, or websites for further information. You could just as easily take a walk around your home, your property, or your neighborhood.            . A simple, lazy ride in your car on some country road, near lakes, streams, or rivers will be all you need to find the birds. There is no place that you will not find a bird or two. [1]The word addiction usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs, but in modern-day society we are seeing some new kinds of addictions. Some people are compulsive (难以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games
[2]Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity. Many people enjoy going to malls or stores more and more everyday, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are hooked on shopping and usually buy things that they don’t need. Even though they don’t have enough money, they buy everything they want.
[3]The question is: why do they have this addiction? There isn’t a specific answer. Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopaholics say that they feel more important and better after they buy something. They also tend to have this addiction when they feel guilty.
[4]Shopaholism seems to be a harmless addiction, but it can ___________. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot. It can also cause financial problems. They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don’t have. They get deep in debt, and they can even go bankrupt and get sent to prison.

Socrates-an ancient Greek philosopher
Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher, who helped to shape Greek beliefs. The ideas he created are present in our culture today.
Socrates was a person full of curiosity. From the time he was a young man, Socrates searched for wisdom and truth. He gained wisdom by asking questions. Many people in Athens thought that they had answers. Socrates asked them questions and argued with them about different topics. He did not think they had the knowledge they claimed to have.
Socrates challenged false ideas people had about things like justice, love, or courage. He would break down the ideas people held. Then he built new and more accurate ideas. Socrates felt that this was what philosophy was all about. Since then, many great philosophers have used this method to find truth.
Throughout his life, Socrates showed no interest in money. He was also not interested in material items. Socrates would allow groups of men to listen to him speak. And he would never take money from them. He always wore the same clothes whatever the season. Socrates argued that his life was better because he had no material wealth. He felt he enjoyed his food more. He said he was stronger and healthier because he was not affected by the weather. He believed happiness came not from having more but from wanting less.
By the end of the fifth century B.C, Athens was not a great city anymore. Politicians betrayed Athens. Socrates had made many people angry over the years. He had always expressed his opinions when he thought laws and policies were wrong. Athens had a new group of political leaders in power, who didn't want to hear Socrates’comments about them. They thought Socrates had a bad influence on the young people of Athens. Socrates was also accused of not worshipping the right gods. Charges were brought against Socrates. The politicians wanted to condemn Socrates to death. Socrates’friends told him to leave Athens. They thought this was the only way for him to save his life. Socrates refused. He did not behave as most people in his situation would.Socrates said that he had always lived by the rules of Athens and he would continue to do this. He insisted on standing trial for his "crime". Socrates knew he was not guilty of anything. The reason why he was charged was because he was different from others. Although people respected him, he also had made many people angry, so the jury(陪审团)said Socrates was guilty.
When faced with the death penalty, a person could leave Athens forever. Most people chose to leave rather than die. Socrates was not like most people. Instead of telling the jury that he would go, he told them he deserved a reward. Socrates believed he had done a great service by making people think. Socrates said that he tried to "persuade every one of you not to think of what he had but rather of what he was, and how he might grow wise and good." The jury did not change its mind. Socrates was executed. He died when he drank hemlock, which is poisonous.
Socrates was the first great Greek philosopher. He also helped to shape other philosophers that came after him. Plato, who got his start by studying with Socrates, and Aristotle, who studied with Plato, also changed Western civilization. Asking questions to discover the truth is still practiced today. And schools even today still teach this method to students.

Statuses(身份) are part of human inventions that help us get along with one another and determine where we “fit” in society. As we go about our daily routines, we mentally attempt to place people in terms of their statuses. For example, we must judge whether the person in the library is a reader or a librarian, whether the telephone caller is a friend or a salesman, and so on.
The statuses we take often vary with the people we meet and change throughout life. Most of us can quickly adjust our statuses that various situations or occasions require. Most of social interaction(互动) consists of identifying and selecting among appropriate statuses and allowing other people to take their statuses in relation to us. This means that we fit our actions to those of other people based on a constant mental process of judgment. Although some of us find the task more difficult than others, most of us perform it rather effortlessly.
A status has been compared to ready-made clothes. Within certain limits, the buyer can choose style and fabric (衣料). But an American is not free to choose the costume of a Chinese peasant or that of a Hindu prince. We must choose from among the clothing presented by our society. Furthermore, our choice is limited to a size that will fit, as well as by our pocketbook(钱包). Having made a choice within these limits we can make certain changes, but apart from minor adjustments, we tend to be limited to what the stores have on their racks(衣架). Statues too come ready made, and the range of choice among them is limited.

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。
【1】A meal in the US used to last for hours. People would sit around a table, talking, eating and drinking late into the evening. However, that just doesn’t happen any more. The average meal is 11 minutes long --- with some breakfasts and lunches lasting barely 2 minutes.
【2】But is eating at such a fast pace problem? Should we be concerned? The answer is “yes” and here are some of the reasons you should eat more slowly:
【3】Eating slowly helps lose weight. Studies show that “fullness” is a complex concept that combines the number of times you chew, the time you spend eating, the look of the food on the plate, as well as the actual amount of food you eat. Slow down and you may have a sense of fullness without eating as much as you eat fast.
【4】When you eat slowly, you end up tasting your food more. This is good because the more you pay attention to your foods, the more you’ll prefer natural foods. Here’s why: Most factory-produced foods taste great for the first 3 or so bites. After that they begin to taste uninteresting. If you slow down to chew them thoroughly, they’ll taste pretty disgusting. Natural foods, however, stay interesting as you chew them.
【5】 Eating can be a social event. Meals are a time when people gather and spend time together. Once the meal is over, everyone goes their separate ways. By taking more time at a meal, you’ll be able to talk with your friends and family more, improve relationships and feel more connected.
【6】 Eating slower gives your stomach more time to start working on the food. When you send an entire meal down your throat in 5 minutes, you may find yourself suffering from poor digestion. Instead, take 20 minutes to eat the same amount of food. Your stomach will have a much easier job. Eating slower might also result in you chewing more, giving your stomach a head start in the digestive process.
