Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to believe or what to do.According to a report on the World Economic Forum (2016),critical thinking, creativity, and their practical application are widely accepted as the top three skills that young people need to possess*in their future career.

A good critical thinker usually takes the following steps before he decides what to do.Whenever he needs to do something,he would, first of all, reason. He checks why he needs to do it and whether he really needs to do it.Then,analyze.He tries to find out what it really is and the best way to do it.After that, evaluate. He makes sure whether he is able to do it and how to do it well. Finally,he makes the decision and takes action.Take the "Double 11"(a popular online shopping day in China) as an example.A few days before it,he checks carefully what he needs and whether he really needs them, and makes a shopping list.He goes to the online shops to compare the quality and the prices of the things that he is going to buy.He compares the shops that sell these things.

Then he checks whether he can afford them and in which shops he is going to buy them.Although it takes him some time to make the decisions,he would not regret after the shopping.

Then what would happen if he didn't think critically before he made the decisions? After the crazy "Double 11",there were usually a lot of complaints on the Internet. There were regrets about buying more things than they needed. There were complaints about the poor quality and the prices of the things they bought. There were also complaints because they received wrong things or simply received nothing. There were all kinds of regrets and complaints. Why so?They had not thought critically before they made the decisions.

If that doesn't work, you could try replying with kindness.Sometimes kind words are the best answer to them.If the teasing continues,be sure to talk to someone who can help.If improving your running speed is something you'd like to work on,you could also ask your gym teacher for advice.

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer﹣driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you.Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there.

So how?The cars have sensors(感应器) all around which can find other cars and objects in the road.Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统) are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go.All you have to do is type in the address! Finally,a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up,stop and turn.

Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂)?Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while "driving" would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people﹣they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations.

However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars.Computers would have difficulties making ethical(道德的) decisions:if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover,I personally find driving fun﹣I'd miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made﹣should children,or drunk people,be allowed in a driverless car by themselves?Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?

I'm not certain.I'd want a driverless car﹣but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and popular on our roads.

42.When using a driverless car,you need only

Heritage(遗产) is traditional customs, culture and beliefs(信仰). We use the world "heritage" in many different ways. People talk about their family heritage, their city's heritage, and their country's heritage.

Today, heritage is changing. The Internet connects people around the world. In many ways this is a good thing, because we can learn about the heritage of other countries, and we can show our own heritage to the world. However, some people worry that traditional heritage is disappearing. Think about it. In many ways, countries are becoming more and more alike(相似的). In just about every country around the world, you can find MacDonald's, Nike Shoes, Starbucks coffee, and American movies. Some people think this is a good change, and others don't like it. You can decide whether or not you think it's a good thing. However, everyone wants to protect their traditional heritage, and sometimes this is hard. This is why heritage protection is so important. Heritage protection is a simple idea. It means keeping your country's or your city's heritage alive. People do this in many ways. The biggest part of heritage protection is probably preserving(保护) old buildings. A few other examples of heritage protection are making sure your children speak your traditional language, and teaching your heritage to children.

Sarah the seagull(海鸥) and her mom lived in New York by the sea.

Every day Sarah and her mom would fly over the waves, diving in to eat the small fish that swam in the shallow(浅的) water. Sometimes people would feed Sarah and her mother a sandwich or some potato chips. They always had a lot to eat. At night, Sarah and her mother would rest under the roof(屋顶) of a nearby building.
