Siena is an old city in the north of Italy. It began with a group of people living on its hills over 2,900 years ago.Around the year 1100,Siena became an important business center in Italy. In 1472,the first bank of the world was built in this city and has been doing business ever since.

The rockets take astronauts and man﹣made satellites(卫星)into space. The satellites are used for communication, weather checking and research. But how do satellites stay up without falling down?

There are two opposite forces influencing the satellite. One of them is the force of gravitation(地心引力) , which tries to pull the satellite towards the earth and is like a rope which keeps the satellite from flying away. The other force is created by the turning of the satellite around the earth. This force tries to take the satellite away from the earth. With these two forces, the satellite goes round and round.

Everything that goes up has to come down. It is only a matter of time before a satellite comes back to the earth. As time goes by,the satellite loses its speed, which makes the force pulling it towards the earth stronger than the force pulling it away. This makes the satellite fall down to the earth.

判断文章后面的问题,正确的答案写T,错误的答案写F.

(1)Two same forces have an influence on the satellite.

(2)The force created by the turning keeps the satellite from flying away.

(3)Two opposite forces make the satellite turn round and round.

(4)The satellite will stay in space forever.

Someone's always watching you online…

How do they get my information? Did you know that when you surf the Web,many websites put secret software on your computer? The software collects a large amount of information about you and sends it to Internet companies. The Internet companies sell it to other businesses. Your personal information can also be collected from social media(媒体)sites. There are many ways your information can be used.

What information do they collect and why? First, companies collect your information. The companies find out where you live, what websites you visit, and what you do online. With this information, they can guess other things about you. For example, they can guess if you are male or female, how old you are, and your interests. The companies use this information to decide which advertisements(广告)are best for you. Two people can go to the same website, but they will see different advertisements. For example, someone who likes sports could see an advertisement for sneakers, and someone who like films might see an advertisement for movie.

What do they do with my information? Your personal information could also be sold. Some companies collect information just so they can sell it to other businesses. A business that collects and sells personal information is called a data broker. When data brokers sell your information, a lot of different companies will know your online habits. Then these companies will advertise products or other websites to you.

What online habits are tracked(追踪)? Another way your personal information can be collected is through social media. When your information is on social media, a lot of people can see it.Even if you don't use social media, a friend might post a picture or video of you with your name on it. Pictures and videos can be shared for free on social media, which is one of the great benefits(福利). However, that same act of sharing could be problem for your own security(安全).If someone knows too much about you, they can steal your identity(身份).Then they can buy things online and post messages while pretending(假装)to be you.

Conclusion All of your online habits can be recorded.Studying people's online habits is big business.Your personal information is very valuable to companies. That is how they know who to send their advertisements to. The Internet reaches almost every corner of the world, but the danger is that your personal information might travel that far, too.

正确的,涂A:错误的,涂B.

Dogs can be good helpers to humans and what about monkeys? They can do a great job, too. Monkeys can help disabled (有残疾的) people live a better life just as dogs do.

Like dogs, monkeys need lots of training to be human helpers. One difference is that monkeys live larger than does do. This means that a monkey's " childhood" is also longer than a dog's.So it may take them four to six years before they are ready to begin training. It's said that it is almost as much work a raising a young child!

Antarctica (南极洲) is at the southern end of the Earth. It is the coldest, driest and windiest place on our planet. What would it be like to live and work there?

On Oct 15, 50 Chinese researchers took a ship named Xuelong 2 from Shenzhen to Antarctica. Xuelong 2 is the first icebreaker (破冰船) made in China. It took two years to build Xuelong 2. It is reported that Xuelong 2 is one of the world's best research icebreakers.

Chinese researchers have been to Antarctica 35 times. Because of its unusual environment, researchers from around the world have been going there to do study (研究) for many years. Some studies can only be done in Antarctica. For example, there is little air pollution there. This makes it easier for scientists to study the weather, atmosphere (大气) and stars.

Misunderstandings

A man, wearing dirty clothes, with dirty hair and only 35 cents in his pocket, got on a bus and headed straight for the restroom. He thought that if he hid in the restroom,he could ride to New York without paying. But a passenger at the back of the bus saw him.She tapped (拍)the person in front of her on the shoulder and said, "There's a bum in the restroom.Tell the bus driver."That passenger tapped the person sitting in front of him." Tell the bus driver there's bum in the restroom,"he said.

The message was passed from person to person until it reached the front of the bus. But somewhere along the way,the message changed.By the time it reached the bus driver,it was not "There's a bum in the restroom"but"There's a bomb(炸弹)in the restroom."The driver pulled over to the side of the highway(高速公路)at once and called the police. When the police arrived, they told the passengers to get off the bus and stay far away. Then they closed the highway. That soon caused a 15﹣mile﹣long traffic jam. With the help of a dog,the police searched the bus for two hours.Of course, they found no bomb.

Two similar﹣sounding English words also caused trouble for a man who wanted to fly from Los Angeles to Oakland,California. His problems began at the airport in Los Angeles. He thought he heard his flight announced,so he walked to the gate, showed his ticket, and got on the plane.Twenty minutes after take﹣off, the man began to worry.Oakland was north of Los Angeles, but the plane seemed to be heading west, and when he looked out his window all he could see was ocean."Is this plane going to Oakland?" he asked the flight attendant. "No,she said."We're going to Auckland﹣ Auckland, New Zealand."

Because so many English words sound similar, misunderstandings among English﹣speaking people are not uncommon. Most misunderstandings are much less serious.Every day, people speaking English ask one another questions like these: "Did you say seventy or seventeen?""Did you say that you can come or that you can't?"

Similar﹣sounding words can be especially confusing (混淆) for people who speak English as a second language. When a Korean woman who lives in the United States arrived at work one morning, her boss asked her,"Did you get a plate?""No…,"she answered, wondering what in the world he meant. She worked in an office. Why did the boss ask her about a plate? All day she wondered about her boss's strange question, but she was too embarrassed to ask him about it. At five o'clock, when she was getting ready to go home, her boss said,"Please be on time tomorrow. You were 15 minutes late this morning.""Sorry, " she said. "My car wouldn't start, and…" Suddenly she stopped talking and began to smile. Now she understood. Her boss hadn't asked her, "Did you get a plate? "He had asked her, "Did you get up late?"

Auckland and Oakland."A plate"and"up late". When similar﹣sounding words cause a misunderstanding, probably the best thing to do is just to laugh and learn from the mistake. Of course, sometimes it's hard to laugh. The man who traveled to Auckland instead of Oakland didn't feel like laughing. But even that misunderstanding turned out all right in the end.The airline paid for the man's hotel room and meals in New Zealand and for his night back to California. "Oh well, "the man later said."I always wanted to see New Zealand."

A表示正确,B表示错误

(1)A man got on the bus and hid in the bus restroom with a bomb.

(2)The 15﹣mile﹣long traffic jam was caused by the man in the restroom.

(3)The man who traveled to New Zealand actually wanted to fly to California

(4)The boss of the Korean woman asked her if she had got a plate that day.

(5)Misunderstandings happen sometimes because of the similar﹣sounding words.

Do you often listen to music at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing. Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss(听力丧失), because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB (分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells(听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells notice sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss Once this happens, it's hard to get your hearing back.

Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.

The "safe level" for most sound is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. a level of 80 dB is about equal to(相当于) the noise of a subway.

Here is some advice on safe listening. Over﹣the﹣ ear headphones(头戴式耳机) are better than in﹣ear ones. They do a better job of stopping outside noise, so you can listen at a lower volume.Don't listen to loud music on your headphones for a long time. Follow the 60: 60 rule: listen to music at 60 percent of your headphones' maximum volume for no more than 60 minutes a day.

根据短文内容,判断下列句子正误.正确的用"A表示,不正确的用"B"表示.

(1)It is safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 100 dB for 15 minutes.

(2)Listening to loud noise for a long time can cause some hair cells in the inner ear to die.

(3)From the fourth paragraph, we know people don't always realize how loud their music is.

(4)In﹣ear headphones are better than over﹣the﹣ear ones because they can stop more outside noise.

(5)This article mainly tells us why ears are an important part of our bodies.
