Do you often listen to music at loud volumes(音量)? Over one billion(十亿) young people are at risk of hearing loss (失聪)because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time.Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes is harmful to your hearing.
The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels(dB 分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
Loud noise is harmful to the inner ears(内耳). most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells(听毛细胞) in our inner ears. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.
Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.
The World Health Organization said the"safe level" for most sounds is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 dB is roughly equal to(大约相当于) the noise of a subway.

My mother used to ask me what was the most important part of the body. Through the years I would guess at what I thought was the correct answer.
When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans. So I said, "My ears, Mommy." She said, "No, many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon."
Several years had passed before she asked me again, Since making my first try, I had thought over the correct answer. So this time I told her, "Mommy, sight(视力) is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes." She looked at me and told me. "You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who can't see."
Over the years, Mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was, "No, but you are getting smarter every year, my boy."
Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying at the funeral (葬礼). My mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final goodbye to grandpa. She asked me, "Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?"
I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game between her and me. She saw the confusion (团惑) on my face and told me, "This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived your life." I saw her eyes in tears.
She said, "My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder."
I asked, "Is it because it holds up(抬起) your head ?"
She replied, "No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or a loved one when they cry. Everybody requires a shoulder to cry on sometimes in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will have a shoulder to cry on when you require it."
Then and there I knew the most important body part is not a selfish (白私的) one. It is Sympathetic (体谅的) to the pain of others.

Recently, my husband and I had the chance to do something good for two people who were complete strangers to us. It made us feel so good to be able to do it that I thought I should share, We were traveling to Thailand on New Year's Day with our family. Since I travel a lot for work, we have had enough flying miles to become the VIP (very important person.) of the flight to enjoy first class(头等舱) seats.
As we were sitting in the very first two seats in the first row of first class waiting for the plane to take off, I heard one of the flight attendants (航班服务员) telling the others that there was a young couple sitting in the back of the plane that had just been married several days before and were going on their honeymoon(蜜月). They had ordered their flight eight months before but, for some reason, had not been able to get seats together. No one else on the plane wanted to move and the bride(新娘) was in tears.
I turned to my husband and told him what I heard. We agreed without thinking twice and I called the flight attendant over to tell her that we would be happy to give up our seats for this young couple, The flight attendant seemed shocked and amazed and said. "Really? Are you sure?"
We said. "Sure!"
So, we moved to the back of the plane, I was in a middle seat in the back part and my husband, who is 63, in the window seat of the last row of the plane.
The flight attendants were very thankful for what we had done and cared for us carefully even though we were no longer sitting in first class, and we both made friends with the people sitting around us and had a great flight. Imagine a perfect day: the weather is good and everything seems fine. When, suddenly, your mobile phone loses its signal, the television has no programs, and you can't get online with your computer.
What has happened? These are just the types of problems a solar storm(太阳风 暴)might cause. You may not think of storms as putting our society in danger. But today, a solar storm is as serious as other bad events, such as earthquakes.
A solar storm is caused by solar flares(太阳耀斑): large explosions(爆炸)near the sun that can give off lots of energy. The strong energy can stop the satellite systems(卫星系统)that control our computers, telecom networks and so on. These storms can even cause the power to go out for weeks or months.
In the past few months, scientists have recorded some of the strongest sun flares in years. The most recent one happened around Valentine's Day, 2011. It caused radio and satellite signals to go down in some northern cities in China.
"Solar flare activity is going to be much worse than what we've seen in the past. We're not talking about a few cities losing power, it could be half of the country, maybe more." SolarStorm Warning.com, a US website about space weather, warned.
Scientists say that little can be done to predict such a storm. Governments around the world are trying to work together before the next storm, although they are not sure when that may happen.

The idea that red means stop and green means go has influenced our lives in more ways than just traffic signals(信号).We have been taught from a young age that the color red means danger and green means it's okay to move forward. But why were those colors chosen for traffic lights in the first place? For something we have to look at every day,why couldn't they have been prettier colors?
Well,it's important to know that before traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railway companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go,and green to mean warn.As you could imagine, trains ran into a few problems with white meaning go.For example, one train mistook a bright star for a white light and something unexpected happened.Because of that, railway companies finally moved green meaning go and used yellow to mean warn. And it's been that way ever since.
Red has always been a color that mean danger, long before cars were even around. This most likely started because it's the color with the longest wavelength(波长) so it can be seen somewhere farther than
other colors.
But,believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop.Back in the 1900s,some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Finally, highly reflective materials(高反射材料) were developed and red stop signs were born.Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs, and school buses continue to be printed yellow.
So next time you are impatiently waiting at a traffic light, don't get so mad at them, they've certainly come a long way.

Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?
Lots of people do.And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one﹣half of the brain"remains more awake"than the otherhalf when people are trying to sleep in a new place.
The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it"first﹣night influence"."In Japan they say,"If you change your bed,you can't sleep,'"said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report's writers."You don't sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it."
The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart (间隔).They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep﹣sleep period, the researchers said.
Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.
Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So,they don't know if the left half keeps"watch"all night,or whether it"works in shifts (轮换) with the right half later in the night".They also do not know why the brain activity,at least during the first period of deep sleep,is always on the left half.
For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is"looking out for us"in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity,at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.

The doctor smiled and said,"I am sorry.I wasn't in the hospital and I came as fast as I could after receiving the call and now,I wish you'd calm down so that I can do my work."
"Calm down?!What if your son was in this room right now?Would you calm down?If your own son dies while waiting for a doctor, then what will you do?"said the father angrily. The doctor smiled again and replied,"We will do our best and you should also pray (祈祷)for your son's healthy life."
The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy,"Thank goodness!Your son is saved!"And without waiting for the father's reply he carried on his way running by saying,"If you have any questions, ask the nurse."
"Couldn't he wait some minutes so that I can ask about my son's state?"shouted the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.
The nurse answered, tears coming down her face."His son died yesterday in a road accident. He was at the burial (葬礼) when we called him for your son's surgery. And now that he saved your son's life,he left running to finish his son's burial."

Have you ever seen the movie Big Hero 6?Baymax(大白)is a main character in the movie. He's a friendly big robot that looks after people's health. If there is a robot like Baymax in our real life, people will get more benefits. The robot will be especially helpful in caring for the old.The health of old people needs greater monitoringand care.
Scientists in America are now working to make Baymax a reality(现实).Actually, they have already produced some health care robots. These robots provide brain video games to improve people's memory. The games can help the old remember things for longer.Besides, these robots provide special apps(应用程序)to help the old manage their health at home. The apps can check the old people's heart rate(心率)and tell them to take their medicine on time. The apps can also record their daily activities.Such collected information helps doctors discover the cause of an illness faster and more correctly. But the health care robots aren't as clever as Baymax yet.
Nowadys, scientists are working on improving the health care robots. They hope the robots can produce electricity by walking across the floor. If they succeed, batteries will not be needed. They also hope the robots can communicate with humans in the daily life so as to make people happier and healthier.
Scientists are trying to realize these dreams.Like Baymax, these health care robots may save people's lives in the future. We are looking forward to them.

Sometimes people come into your life and you know at once that they were sure to be there. They serve some certain purpose, teach you a lesson or help find out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be:your classmate, neighbor, teacher, long﹣lost friend or even a real stranger. But you know that every moment they will influence your life in some serious way.
Sometimes things happen to you.At the time they may seem terrible, painful and unfair. But later you realize that without overcoming those difficulties, you would have never realized your further ability and advantages.Everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck.
The people you meet influence your life, and the success and failure you experience create who you are.Even the bad experience can be learned from.In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.
Enjoy every day even every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can,for you may never be able to experience it again.Talk to people whom you have never talked to before, and really listen. You should set your goals high, hold your head up,tell yourself you are a great one and believe in yourself.
