On a June afternoon in 1752, the sky began to get dark over the city. As the storm broke, most people surely hurried inside, but not Benjamin. Franklin. He decided it was the perfect time to fly a kite. Franklin had been waiting for a chance like this. He wanted to show the connection between lightning(闪电) and electricity, and to do so, he needed a storm.

He walked into field, and flew a kite with a piece of rope tied to it. A key was tied to the rope. The lightning hit the kite, and electricity passed through the rope to the key. Franklin then touched the key with his finger and got an electric shock(电击). This, he said, proved(证明) the electrical nature of lightning.

For many years, schools have taught the story of Franklin's experiment. Millions of schoolchildren have been amazed by his courage and his scientific spirit of looking for the truth. However, new research suggests that the story may be fiction instead of fact. Although Franklin's experiment took place, more than one scientist has questioned what really happened. It's true that he did the experiment with the rope and the key. But scientists all agree that if Franklin had actually touched the key, he would certainly have died from the electric shock.

Scientists often question accepted ideas because they want to find out the facts. Some have even questioned the story about the apple that fell on Newton's head. Many reports suggest that although the falling apple certainly provided ideas, there is nothing to show that the apple actually hit him on the head,

In fact, fiction is often more interesting than the truth.People have been more encouraged by Franklin's spirit than by the facts themselves. But in science, facts should be tested by experiments and research, and we should not always believe everything we read or hear even if it is a great story.

Mark Twain once said,"Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today." The famous writer talked about a problem many of us have. The problem is procrastination (拖延症). When procrastination becomes a habit, it can make our lives terrible. However, everyone can avoid it by taking a few simple steps today!

    ✧Make daily "to do" lists.

Before your day ends, make a plan for tomorrow.List upcoming tasks in order of importance. You'll begin each new day with a head start, already knowing what needs to be done.As you complete each task, check it off.(1)

Always keep your daily schedule(计划)with you. Use it to remind yourself what you need to do next. You'll then have a much better chance of carrying out your plans.

✧Break large tasks up into small ones.

If a project looks too big,(2) .The task at hand may seem too great. You may feel defeated (挫败) before beginning. But every project is doable if it's done in small steps.

    ✧(3)

If your workplace is full of distractions(使人分心的事),you'll need to make some changes. You may need to remove your phone or TV from your workplace. If people often stop by for a talk, you may need to move to a different place.

    ✧Follow the five﹣minute rule.

The hardest part about any task is getting started. That's why so many people avoid their work until the last minute. Doing so usually leads to added stress. One solution to this problem is to schedule a time daily to work on your big project. Work on it for only five minutes. Then decide whether or not to continue. Surprisingly, once you've begun, (4)

There's an old saying: "Laughter is the best medicine," and modern research certainly shows that laughing is good for you. When you have a good laugh, you exercise your muscles (肌肉),strengthen your heart and balance your body chemistry. However, these are the results of having laugh, not the explanations (解释)of why we do it.

Until recently, scientists believed that laughter was a human behaviour only. They argued that people find jokes funny because we can put ourselves in another person's shoes, and that animals can't do that.People don't all have the same sense of humour. Sometimes there isn't any joke,or we may not have heard it but we laugh because the people around us are laughing. How long and how loud we would laugh are also shared. We just go on following the example with one another until the laughter fades away (消失).

Many pet owners insist that animals have a sense of humour, too. For example, pet dogs often run away with a slipper (拖鞋) and then stop, inviting their owners to run after them. Dogs even seem to smile when their owners join in the game. As the game continues, our pets make noises that are very like laughter. You can compare this behaviour to the laughter of a baby, who continually throws a toy down, waits for the adult to pick it up and throws it down again.

Perhaps laughter is just a sign that we are having fun. Fun, like laughter, is best when we share it with friends.

C. sometimes some people laugh because people around them do so

(3)From the behavior of pet dogs we can tell that

A. pet dogs are very naughty

B. animals have a sense of humor, too

C. animals are more humorous than human beings

(4)When a baby throws a toy down waits for the adult to pick it up and throws it down again, he will be

A. nervous

B. angry

C.happy
