The term Start of Summer appeared over 2200 years ago. Since it is an important time for the harvest(收获) of summer plants, ancient Chinese emperors in different dynasties paid special attention to it.
In the Zhou Dynasty(1050-221 BC), the emperor led his officers to celebrate the Start of Summer and encouraged his people to do farm work in time. Everything, including the emperor’s and the officers’ dress, the horses and the flags, was decorated(装饰) in the color red, in order to show respect to the god of summer and hope for a good harvest.
One of the most interesting customs(风俗) is weighing people at the Start of Summer. It began to be celebrated from the Three Kingdoms Period(220-180) and is getting popular in South China today.
It was believed that this custom would bring heath and good luck to the people who were weighed. After lunch on the day of Start of Summer, the young and old took turns to get weighed while receiving good wishes from the people around him. Connecting with Nature
How do you feel when you hear birds singing freely in the trees? What’s your feeling when you see butterflies dancing slowly and lightly in the wind? Whether you love researching the outdoors or watching far away, getting close to nature can take your mind off your worries and make you feel relaxed.
What is nature?
Nature means the world around us that is not man-made, including birds, mountains, trees, the sea and the stars. It’s also a force that controls things like weather. We can find nature wherever we are and wherever we go —beaches, gardens, parks, rivers, and even unexpected places like cracks (裂缝) in the stones.
Why does nature make us feel good?
Spending time in nature brings peace, joy and wonder to our lives. It takes us outdoors, gets us active and lets us care more about the environment. Even a little gift of nature can make us feel free and hopeful, such as breathing in fresh air, listening to the wind in the trees or standing at a mountain. Ralphie, who is 10, likes being close to nature on a bike with his family. He says, “It makes us feel happy and takes our mind off things because we have to pay attention. We are away from traffic and we hear more birdsong and see more wild animals.”
How can we feel closer to nature?
Feeling closer to nature is easy. We can build a connection with nature wherever we are using our senses. Try listening closely to birdsong, smelling flowers and feeling sand between our fingers. Paint a picture and take photos of the natural places that we like best. They may help us feel closer to the natural world. It’s important to try and connect with nature, notice its beauty and how it makes us feel.

What color is a tennis ball? Ask your classmates, and they might give you some ___(1)___ answers.
The Atlantic asked 30, 000 people this question. Among the people surveyed, 52 percent said tennis balls are green, 42 percent said yellow, and 6 percent said ___(2)___ else.
According to the International Tennis Federation, tennis balls ___(3)___ yellow. So, why do most people say that they’re green?
When we ___(4)___ see an object in natural light, our brains recognize its true color. Even if the object ___(5)___ in different kinds of light later, our brains can still tell its true color. ___(6)___ call this color constancy (色彩恒常性). For example, we know that China’s flag is red. However, the color of a tennis ball is not as pure (纯的) as the flag. It appears to be a mixture of yellow, a “warm” color, and green, a “cool” color.
The US-based magazine says that when ___(7)___ brains try to figure out what color the ball is, some people ignore (忽略) cool colors like green, blue and purple. So they see the ball as yellow. ___(8)___ ignore warm colors, such as red, yellow and orange. They see the ball as green.
It is not just tennis balls that make such confusion. In 2015, a girl ___(9)___ a picture of a dress online. Some people said the dress was black and blue ___(10)___ other people said it was gold and white. They had different opinions based on whether they ignored cool or warm colors.
