Many people know that rubbish is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don't know is that junk(垃圾)has become a problem in outer space too.

According to BBC News, there are more than 22, 000 pieces of space junk floating around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes (望远镜). There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.

Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds,so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed into a spaceship, it could damage the vehicle.

To make things worse, when two objects in space crash, they break into many smaller pieces. For example, when a U.S. satellite hit an old Russian rocket in 2009, it broke into more than 2,000 pieces, increasing the amount of space junk.

To reduce additional space junk, countries have agreed that all new space tools can only stay in space for 25 years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.

Many scientists also suggesting different ways to clean up space junk. In England scientists are testing a metal net that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth's atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely destroyed.

The problem is becoming more challenging because we're sending more objects into space to help people use their mobile phones and computers," says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space Researcher.

"The time to act is now. The longer we leave the problem, the bigger it will become," he says.

A. the tools can be reused later

B. the tools don't become space junk

C. the earth's atmosphere can stay clean

Experts believe that there are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants, as we know them, have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. That is, there were no places that provided the restaurant experience. There was nowhere in which a waiter brought you food and drink that you picked from a menu. In fact, there were no menus anywhere.

There were eating places travellers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. And there were taverns where one could get drinks. The rich could also eat special meals prepared by private cooks. But none of them could be called a "restaurant".

A man called Boulanger changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups(汤). On his sign he used the word "restaurant" to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help "restore"(恢复)your health﹣ in French the word "restore" is "restaurer"﹣﹣﹣ so he called the soups "restaurants". Soon, people started buying Boulanger's soups even when they were not ill. And over time, people began to use the word "restaurant" to refer to a place selling soup rather than the soup itself. More "restaurants" opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often.

Later, restaurants in Paris began to serve other food besides soup. In the 1790s, menus started to appear. By the mid﹣1800s, there were many types of restaurants throughout the world. The United States offered coffee shops. Tea houses became popular throughout China. Paris created beautiful restaurants for the rich. The British began to copy the French, and the restaurant idea spread throughout the British Empire.

Today cities are filled with all types of restaurants. Diners have millions of options from which to choose.

A. How restaurants developed.

B. What made a good restaurant.

B. Sick people.

For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.

To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin's parents would let him decide.

Lin's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.

The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.

Then he saw it. "Cooking" sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.

Based on Lin's hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.

Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

Our words carry huge weight. They may influence people for years, and even for a lifetime. They provide them with courage to go on or one more reason to give up.

When I was fourteen,my family moved to another city.Junior high was always a difficult time for me,and the move made my ninth﹣grade year even harder.I remember walking into the dining hall for the first time. The other kids had good friends with them, but I didn't know anyone.I felt lonely and went to the nearest seat after getting some food. The kids beside me looked at me up and down and then laughed.I could feel my face turning red at that moment. Then one of the Kids broke the ice."Man!You have one BIG nose!"I felt hurt and didn't know what to say.I wanted to cry.But I managed a little smile﹣﹣﹣as if it didn't hurt me at all.But it did. From then on,I would often look at myself in the mirror.I studied the big nose closely. It seemed that I was just living for my nose.Thankfully,I grew out of this influence finally. But it really took me twenty years

There is another thing that is kept deep in my mind.I remember going through a terrible business failure.I lost everything.I called my dad for help and he told me a lot about how to deal with the failure. What he said gave me a lot of courage and confidence(信心)to go on with my business.

People often think of the North Pole(北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen(冰冻的)

wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.

The North Pole has no land, only thick ice.Temperatures seldom go above 32°F,at which water turns into ice. Most of the time,it stays below zero.In winter temperatures are usually as low as﹣30°F.

Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole.About 100years ago,two men,Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th,1909.It was really a hard trip for them.

There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic(北极圈) on foot.People who stayed there may face many problems:very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited.Few people can live in such a difficult place.

People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface.Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water(水道) called"leads".Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

Recently, China announced it had achieved success in drilling fire ice or methane hydrate(天然气水合物即,可燃冰), from the seabed in the shenhu area of the South China Sea. It produces high amount of energy when it is burned, leaving nothing but dioxide and water.

Many countries, including the United States and Japan, have long been doing research on methane hydrate, but taking it from bottom of the sea has been a common problem they are facing.According to reports.China succeeded in drilling methane hydrate for a number of days continuously and got an average of over 16,000 m 3 daily. It is believed to be a big breakthrough.

Scientists say there is about 21, 000 trillion( 万亿 )3 of methane hydrate in the world. If we can use it, it can meet the world's energy need for 1, 000 years. However, it is too early to say a new energy source (来源 ) has been found because we are still facing two main challenges﹣environmental risk and economic(经济的)cost. When methane hydrate is taken from the seabed, it may go into the air easily. That's very bad for the environment because methane is one of the worst greenhouse gases, Besides, drilling methane hydrate is very expensive as well.

However, China's technology breakthrough is very important because it shows the way researchers across the world should take. It also raises hopes that one day we can drill methane hydrate as a source of energy.

(1)What is Paragraph I mainly about ?

Dear daughters,

Most parents tell their children,"You can be anything you want when you grow up."I feel the same and I say this often. But I also want you to understand that the dream itself comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing.

Girls, here are some words of wisdom(智慧) as you make your way in the world, from your mama.

1.Be open﹣minded to changing your path(even several times)along the way.

In high school,I wanted to be an official.I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington,DC.There,I discovered that I'm creative,a strong leader and great at marketing. As result,I moved on to be the head of a national organization.Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to starting a business. Now I run a successful company that I started up all by myself.

Work out what you are good at and what you are interested in.Keep an open mind and change what you are doing based on what you are learning about yourself.

2.Failure is critical to your success

I won't tell you to feel good about failure.Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I've had along the way has absolutely made me better.

Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing.I finally passed, and I've never failed an exam again.I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now,I ask for help in business all the time.

I'm proud to be a role model to you as a mom and a company owner,I hope I can help you to believe that you can be anything you want and you can have everything on your list.It will be very glad to watch your lives unfold before my eyes.
