"Well, I'll eat the cake," Alice said. "If I get taller, I can reach the key on the table. And if get Smaller, I can go under the door into the garden."Then she fished the cake very soon.

"I shall be as tall as a house in a minute," she said. She tried to look down at her feet, and could only just see them.

Just then her head hit the ceiling (天花板) of the room. She was now about three meters tall quickly, she took the key from the table and hurried to the garden door. But she was too tall to go through the door. She began to cry. The tears (泪水) ran down her face, and soon there was large pool of salt water all around her on the floor. Suddenly she heard a voice, and she stopped crying to listen.

"Oh, the Duchess (公爵夫人),the Duchess! She'll be very angry! I'm late, and she's waiting for me. Oh dear, oh dear!"

It was the White Rabbit again. He was hurrying down the long room, with a pair of white gloves in one hand and a fan in the other hand.

Alice was afraid, but she needed help. So she said in a low voice,"Oh, please, sir﹣"

Her voice frightened ( 使惊恐) the Rabbit. He dropped the gloves and the fan, and ran away quickly.

Alice picked up the gloves and the fan. The room was very hot, so she cooled down with the fan. She said, "Oh dear! How strange everything is today! Shall I get smaller during the night?"

She began to feel very unhappy again, but then she looked down at her hand. She was wearing one of the Rabbit's white gloves."How did I get it on my hand?" she thought."Oh, I'm getting smaller again! I'm already less than a meter tall and getting smaller every second! How can I stop it?" She saw the fan in her other hand. "It must be the fan!" she thought, and quickly she dropped it.

She was now very, very small, and the key was still lying on the table.

"Things are worse than ever," thought poor Alice. She turned away from the door, and fell into salt water, right up to her neck. At first she thought it was the sea,but then she saw it was the pool of her own tears.

"Oh, why did I cry so much?" said Alice. She swam around and looked for a way out, but the pool was very big. Just then she saw an animal in the water near her. It looked like a large animal to Alice, but it was only a mouse.

"Shall I speak to it?" thought Alice. "Everything is very strange here, so perhaps a mouse can speak.

Then she began,"Oh, Mouse, do you know the way out of this pool? I am very tired of swimming.

But the mouse looked at her with its little eyes and said nothing.

"Perhaps it doesn't understand English,"thought Alice. "Perhaps it's a French mouse. "So she began again, and said in French,"Where is my cat?" (This was first sentence in her French book. )

The mouse jumped half out of the water and looked at her angrily.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" cried Alice quickly."Of course, you don't like cats, do you?"

"No. I don't like cats," the mouse replied.

Last month, the artist Christo opened his new art sculpture. It is made up of 7,506 colorful barrels (桶) floating on a lake in Hyde Park in London. Christo calls it The London Mastaba. It is his first major outdoor art sculpture in Great Britain. The artwork is in the shape of a mastaba. It looks somewhat like a pyramid with a fat top. The London Mastaba is about 65 feet high, 98 feet wide and 130 feet long, and it weighs about 1.3 million pounds. The metal barrels can be seen from hundreds of feet away.

    (2)

Everyone who looks at it will see something different. Many will think the barrels are barrels of oil in the heart of one of London's oldest parks. They might wonder if Christo was making an announcement against pollution. Others will see a prism or giant pixels or simply a shape. However, everyone must decide for themselves, the 83﹣year﹣old artist said. Christo said he had nothing special in mind when he created The London Mastaba. "There are no messages," Christo said. "There is something in it to discover yourself. I cannot direct you."

    "A Stairway To The Sky"

"It's created a giant invitation, like a stairway to the sky," Christo said. The artist was standing on the banks of the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park where his artwork floats. Swans are swimming nearby. Some barrels are red with a white candy stripe on the sides. Others are colored blue, purple and red. Their colors will look different as the light changes, Christo said. Their reflection (倒影) in the lake will be like an abstract painting. Abstraction is an artistic style that does not always show something recognizable or realistic.

"Not Really Sure How I Feel About It"

Many people walking in the park were surprised to see the artwork. "It's very modern, but this place is nature and historical. I don't like it here," said Yasmin KocOzcengel, who is a tourist from Turkey. Another person who took a look at the artwork was Anna Andronova. She called The London Mastaba very brave. If it weren't as brave, it wouldn't be as amazing, she said. Sheila Seffenson is an American living in London. "I'm just not really sure how I feel about it," Steffenson said. "Maybe it's a message about pollution. Who knows?"

(1)What can we learn about the artwork?

A. It is a floating pyramid.

B. It is made up of empty oil barrels.

C. It is an abstract painting.

D. It is considered as different things.

(2)Which of the following would be most suitable for ____?

A. An Announcement Against Pollution.

B. An Announcement Against Pollution?

C. A New Landmark Of The Oldest Park.

D. A New Landmark Of The Oldest Park?

(3)Which of the following words can best describe The London Mastaba?

A. Romantic.

B. Magical.

C. Realistic.

D. Mysterious.

(4)What can most possibly be the artist's real purpose?

A. To add some more colours to the old park.

B. To bring his art career to a new height.

C. To encourage people to discover and think.

D. To remind people to care about nature.

"Look at Amy's picture!" Mom said, too loud. She does that when she's excite, because she can't hear herself. Some kids turned to stare at us and I wanted to hide.

I led my family into my classroom and looked around. Other kids and parents were there, but I didn't see Evelyn.

Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced her to my family and explained that my parents are deaf.

"Oh," she said. "Well, how do you say ‘Welcome!' in sign language?"

"Like this." I swept my open right hand in toward my body, palm (掌心) up.

    She repeated the movement.

"Thank you," Mom said, smiling. "It's nice to meet you."

Ms. Jennings looked surprised. "You speak very well," she said.

In sign language, I repeated what Ms. Jennings had said in case my parents hadn't read her lips (嘴唇).

"Yeah." I couldn't think of anything else to say.

"And you can talk to them with your hands? That's so cool."

"You think so?" I asked. I exhaled with relief

Evelyn nodded. "It's like a secret code. Would you teach me some words sometime?"

    I smiled. "Of course."

"One of my dad's neighbours uses signneighbours," she said. "Maybe I can surprise her with a greeting next time I visit my dad."

"Your dad doesn't live with you?" I said.

She shook her head. "My parents are separated."

"Oh, I…" I'd been so worried about my family that I hadn't thought about Evelyn's family. "Hey, if you come over tomorrow, we can practice some sign language then."

I think there are several reasons that suggest developing robots is a waste of money.

In San Diego recently $ 325,000 was spent on inventing a robotic squirrel to do some scientific experiments. The research proved that squirrels are able to scare away snakes by wagging (摇动) their tails. Do you need a robotic squirrel to work this out?

What about AIBO,a robotic pet, developed in Japan? In Japanese aibou means "buddy". These pets have been developed at huge cost mainly to provide entertainment. They've been used in movies and music videos. Universities have used them for educational purposes. However, in 2006 the company stopped producing these robotic pets in order to save money. Was it worth a lot of money?

Then there's NAO, a robot which has been developed by a French company. Its main purpose is to make life easier for humans. It speaks 19 languages and has its own personality. It can tell children a story, help in the classroom or the home, or act as a companion to those people who need someone to be with.A fully developed one costs ﹩16,000. Is that value for money? Who can afford it anyway?

There may be good reasons why it is worth developing robots, but so far I haven't thought of any.

(1)What does the underlined word "companion" in Paragraph 4 mean in Chinese?

A.公司

B.机构

C.对手

D.伙伴

(2)What is the true fact about the robots mentioned?

A. The robotic squirrel is needed by every scientist to do some research.

B. AIBO wasn't made any more because it only provided entertainment.

C. A fully developed NAO may tell kids stories in different languages.

D. All the three types of robots used to be produced at a very low cost.

(3)What does the writer think of developing robots?

Herman planted the hot peppers (胡椒) in his five﹣hectare field in his town. The 36﹣year﹣old man put up a sign reading "Africa Hema Village" in Chinese, English and his native language. His first harvest will start this month. Herman studied in China from 2011 to 2018, receiving his master's degree and a doctorate in environmental science. He returned to Rwanda in 2018 with his wife, Yang Hong, who is from China, and started his own business. Hema Xiansheng CEO Hou Yi visited Rwanda to find quality products to bring to the Chinese market. Hot peppers were one of his discoveries. The couple helped Hou's team, from research to field trips, testing production processes (加工) and so on. They also helped Hema Xiansheng's purchasing (采购) manager, Chen Huifang, when she led a team of eight to visit Rwanda to research the possibilities of making hot pepper products that suit Chinese preferences.

"We wore rubber gloves when we touched them. Our fingers still felt hot the next day," Chen said. Their research and development team spent four days studying and cooking the peppers. Transporting fresh hot peppers to China proved difficult, so the fresh peppers can't be imported (进口) into China. Then Chen's team decided to perform basic processing in Rwanda before shipping. Processing requires a careful balance. Too much salt will make the peppers less delicious. Too little, and the peppers may go bad. Because plastics mustn't be used in Rwanda, they had to find proper ways to carry the pepper sauce. The material they first used couldn't stand the long flights. Now Chen is happy to see that the pepper sauce has sold well in Hema's offline and online stores.

Herman pointed out that few local farmers grow hot peppers because the market is small. A small amount is sold to Europe. And local need is limited due to its spiciness. So, about half the harvest is wasted every year. A young man in Rwanda will only make 10 yuan ($1.4)a day by working in the cities, but if they grow hot peppers due to Hema's orders, they can make 50 to 60 yuan a day. Herman expressed his willingness to introduce more people to make more money by farming, rather than working for lower incomes, when e﹣commerce (电子商务) can bring greater needs and sales.

"It's a chance for Rwandan people to join the new field and change their lives," Herman said, "Through building more Hema Villages, Rwanda has the chance to become a country of digital agriculture."

A. a balance is needed when the processing is done

B. fresh hot peppers mustn't be imported into China

C. in Rwanda, people are not allowed to use plastics

D. during shipping, fresh hot peppers are easy to go bad

(3)If a young man in Rwanda grows hot peppers for Hema, he may get about

A. 10 dollars a week

B. 1,600 yuan a month

C. 500 dollars a year

D. 16,000 yuan half a year

(4)What can we learn from the passage?

A. Many types of products have been offered in Africa Hema Village.

C. Hema Xiansheng paid for Herman's seven﹣year education in China.

D. Herman hopes to do something to improve people's lives in Rwanda.

Do you like Physics or Chemistry? Matter (物质) is always changing, either physically or chemically. If a material goes through a physical change, it is still the same material. During a chemical change, one kind of matter changes into another completely different kind of matter. For example, when we burn wood or cook fish, materials change. People use chemistry every day in the kitchen. The food we eat has many different natural chemicals. Many of the chemicals in food are necessary parts of a healthy diet.

Much of the food we eat has been changed in some way from its original form. The changes that food undergoes may be chemical or physical. If a change does not affect the food's chemical composition, we call it a physical change. For example, melted (溶解的) cheese has gone through a physical change. It gets softer when it is heated but it is still the same type of material. Any change that changes the chemicals in the food is a chemical change. Bread contains carbohydrates, which are chemicals made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. When bread is baked (烘焙), the carbohydrates break down into black carbon and water. The carbon gives the bread a dark color and a crunchy texture (质地). The water goes into the air.

To get a closer look at the chemistry of baking, let's watch how a carrot cake is made. The main steps of baking any cake are mixing the ingredients (材料) and baking them together. In the course of making cakes, the dry ingredients are mixed first. They are flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder and spices. Flour gives the cake structure. Sugar helps to make it sweet. Salt strengthens the cake batter. Baking powder and baking soda make the cake rise.

Next, the carrots may be added to the cake. These help give the carrot cake its flavor, texture, and color. The other ingredients in the carrot cake are oil and eggs. The oil makes the cake tender and moist. Eggs serve two purposes﹣the whites help the cake to rise, while the yolks (蛋黄) give it a creamy texture. All of these ingredients form a mixture. This mixture can be separated into its different components (成分) although it is very difficult. Once the cake mixture is formed, it's poured into a cake pan and baked in an oven. The heat from the oven has caused chemical changes to take place. The cake is finished and the ingredients cannot be separated.

(1)The material doesn't change when we

A. melt ice cream

B. burn paper

C. bake apple pies

D. cook beef

(2)What's the correct order of baking a carrot cake in the passage?

a. Carrots, oil and eggs are added.

b. The dry ingredients are mixed.

c. The mixture is baked in an oven.

d. Baking powder and soda make the cake rise.

e. Preparing some dry ingredients.

f. The heat from the oven causes chemical changes.

g. The ingredients cannot be separated.

h. The mixture is poured into a pan

A. b﹣a﹣h﹣f﹣g

B. b﹣h﹣c﹣d﹣f

C. e﹣d﹣c﹣a﹣g

D. e﹣c﹣a﹣g﹣d

(3)After reading the passage, we know that

A. water and carbon can give the cake a dark color and a crunchy texture

B. people can separate the mixture of eggs and oil into different components

C. chemicals in different kinds of food that people eat are bad for their health

D. sugar and salt can't be put into the mixture to make a cake at the same time

(4)The passage mainly helps us to

A. look at the steps of baking cakes closely

B. learn how to make carrot cakes at home

C. have a healthy diet with natural chemicals

D. understand physical and chemical changes
