I had two pets in my house, a dog named Sam and a cat named Katty. They loved each other so much that they were always together. When I played with one, the other joined in.If Sam barked at something,Katty ran to see what it was. When I took either one out of the house, the other was always waiting by the door when we returned. That was the way it was for years.
But one day, without any warning, Sam died of a heart attack (心脏病突发) at the animal hospital and I had to walk back to our house alone. This time, there was no Sam for Katty to greet and no way for me to explain why she would never see her friend again.
In the days that followed, Katty seemed heartbroken. She could not tell me in words how she felt, but I could see the pain and disappointment in her eyes whenever anyone opened the front door and the hope whenever she heard a dog bark.
As the weeks went by,the cat seemed to feel much better. One day as I walked into our living room,I happened to have a look at the floor next to our sofa where we had a statue (塑像) of Sam that we had bought a few years before. CHANGSHA﹣Eight pandas moved to their new home in the ancient town of Fenghuang in Central China's Hunan Province on Friday.

For years, it has been said that newspapers are at death's door.Every year brings more news of closing. But why is the situation so terrible for newspapers?
Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in the 1600s. Their most successful period is in the early 20th century.
With the appearance of radio and TV, however, newspaper circulation (发行量) began to fall.(3)By the mid﹣20th century, radio and TV had become so popular that people no longer had to depend on newspapers for news. That was especially true for breaking (突发的) news.
Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer (受损害). After work, more and more people turned on TV instead of opening a newspaper. That was because TV could provide news happening a short time ago. It's true that newspapers couldn't compete with TV on speed, but they could provide in﹣depth (深入详尽的) reports that TV news could not.
But newspapers suffered another, heavier blow (打击) in the 1990s. With the appearance of the Internet, tons of information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could read news on the Internet. There seemed to be little reason to pay for a newspaper subscription (订阅).
So what does the future hold? Will newspapers die? Maybe not. Many newspapers are now making changes. Some are going digital (数字的). Some are going farther and taking the industry to places it has never been to. After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are still an important source (来源) of in﹣depth news, analysis (分析) and opinions.

One year, I had a fall at home and was on the floor for 16 hours, During this time, I was unable to move and couldn't get to the phone to call for help. Tiger stayed by my side until he disappeared under my bed. 'What's he up to?' I wondered. To my surprise, he started to push something towards me. It was my iPad,which I didn't realize had fallen off the bed and onto the floor. He probably didn't know what it was, but he knew that it made me happy. Thanks to Tiger, I was able to communicate with my friend, Becky, who then told my doctor."
The second story is from Colin. "Years ago, my friend Julius saved a bird﹣a wild 'Mom' cockatoo(鹦鹉) from the side of the road and kept it as a pet in a big cage(笼子).It lost one of her wings, so she was unable to return to the wild. Have you ever paid for educational podcasts (播客) or live videos? Ask some people and most of them will say yes. "Pay﹣for﹣knowledge" has been more and more fashionable these years. The contents of these "pay﹣for﹣ knowledge" products are from language learning to gardening or baby﹣caring. Everything you think of can be found online at this moment. "Pay﹣for﹣knowledge" is on the rise (兴起).

Besides, buyers can enjoy self﹣growth from it.What's more, this is a reflection (反映) of respect for knowledge and talents.

In other words, with or without these courses, they can make it anyway, because they are those who have the ability to learn by themselves.

In a few hours Sam would be flying to Germany. We looked at each other but no sound broke the silence of my beach﹣side house.
Such a moment was not the first time for me.On Sam's first day of kindergarten (幼儿园),I felt his stress when holding his hand.He looked at me﹣as he did now. But I said nothing till the school bus came.About ten years later,I drove him to the college. He was sick but I didn't know then. I thought he was just too tired. I tried to think of something to say as he would start a new period of life. Again,___________.
Now, as I stood before him, I thought of those opportunities we parents all let pass. A boy graduates from school,a daughter gets married. We seldom find a quiet moment to tell them what they have meant to us. Or what they might face in the future.
Sam was weak when he was born but grew into a strong boy. Then he became the best baseball player in high school. His finest moment came when he got the first prize at a science fair.I was sorry he gave up his athletic talent, but proud that later he chose English literature. One day,I told Sam I regretted never traveling abroad to know better about the world before working.Sam decided to learn German in Berlin, even though his friends thought it meaningless.
The night before he was to leave, I failed to say any words again. Maybe, I thought, it wasn't necessary to say anything.
What does it matter if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him? But as I stood before Sam,I knew it does matter. My father and I loved each other. However,I always regretted never hearing him put his feelings into words.
"Sam,"I said,"if I could have picked,I would have picked you."I wasn't sure he understood what I meant. Sam came towards me and threw his arms around me,saying"thank you".My eyes misted over (模糊). Then, the moment ended, and Sam left home.
That was seven weeks ago, and now I think about him when I walk along the beach near my home on weekends. Thousands of miles away, Sam might be busy walking in the street of Berlin.
What I had said to Sam was not new. It was nothing. But,it was everything.
