School Gardens Could Help Children Try More Vegetables
It's not always enjoyable for children to eat vegetables. But what if a garden is built in the school?New research suggests that a gardening program in schools can increase children's vegetable intake(摄入量) .
How the Study Was Carried Out
The study was carried out in eight schools,Each school was in the gardening program for one school year.Every child in grades 3﹣5 received a total of eighteen 60﹣minute lessons across the school year.In the program, each school built a garden, where children learned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables.
The Benefits Children Could Get
The study found that vegetable intake if the children who grew their own produce increased greatly across the year.Related studies show that increased vegetable intake can improve health and cut the risk of chronic diseases(慢性疾病).Not only are there benefits to health, increasing the variety of vegetables children are exposed(接触)to may also make mealtimes much easier." Children who are often exposed to a variety of vegetables are more likely to try new foods," explains Dr.Kerry Jones. For children, growing their own food is a powerful tool to increase their intake of the food.(2)
Any opportunity to expose children to more vegetables is meaningful. "If children are learning about vegetables at school,it's important to encourage this interest," says Jones.Parents can listen to their children about what they have learned and read the handouts they bring home from school.Parents and children can also read books together.Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents who offer useful message.Older children may enjoy searching through cookbooks with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in a tasty way.Besides,a small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from.
Teaching children to grow their own produce is a great way to increase their preference for the produce. If children are taught to enjoy vegetables early in life, they will probably continue eating vegetables in the long term.

More than a hundred years later, popsicles are sill one of the best summer treats!
Crayon Holdans

She was now able to hold them easily. This is how she invented Caryon Holders.
Wristies
When snow gets in kids' gloves and their hands get wet, they feel uncomfortable.10﹣year﹣old Kathryn Gregoary decided to do something about it.She created the wristies as she wanted to keep her wrists(手腕)warm and dry. When I was in the middle school, I seldom raised my hands to answer questions in class. And I found lots of my classmates were just like me. When the teacher asked a question, I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me.
One day, in a foreign language class, Mr. Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class, so he asked us some questions, but no one answered."At the beginning of the class, let me tell you a story." He said.
"When I came to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech, I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a cardboard folded (折叠) in half, wrote their names in bold (粗体) with the most eye﹣catching color, and then placed the cardboard on the seat.So when the speaker needed the answers from the students,he could see and call a listener' s name directly."
"I couldn't understand that. My classmates told me the speakers were all top people who meant chances. When your answer was to their surprise, it meant they might give you more chances. In fact,I really saw a few students got great chances because of that."

Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why? Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate (激活)an area of the brain called Striatum.Research also shows that kindness improves people's mood (情绪).But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around may be smiling, too. This is specially true for your close friends and family .A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. Itcan also make ourselves fee good.So why not set off that chain(链条)of good feelings to people around?
Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others.Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger.Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself.Similarly, charities(慈善)also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind,he or she makes others in the group kind.It also lifts everyone's spirits.Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you're getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.

In 2010,he went on a diving (潜水)vacation in Greece and was shocked."I saw more plastic bags than fish in the water," he said.
From then on,Slat began to pay more attention to ocean pollution. He decided to give up higher education and set up the Ocean Cleanup,a non﹣government organization. Its purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world's first ocean cleanup system ( 系统)with his team.
Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and it can take up to 500 years to break down.In 2018,the World Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastic would match that of all the fish in our oceans by 2050.Sea animals easily get caught in plastic. They can't move. They can even die if they eat it.Smaller plastic pieces can also enter the food chain (链)and end up in our bodies.
Slat's plan was to create an environmentally﹣friendly, large system to clear out plastic rubbish from the ocean.
After seven years of tests,on October 2nd,2019,a machine called System 001/B came out.It successfully caught and collected a large amount of plastic rubbish floating in the ocean.
Slat and his team are working to improve System 001/B.Their dream is to clear out 90 percent of all the ocean plastic by 2040.

Yuan Longping is one of the most famous scientists. He regards himself as a farmer because he does his research in the fields. In fact, his sunburnt face and arms and his slim, strong body are just like those of millions of farmers.Dr.Yuan Longping grows what is called super hybrid (杂交性的) rice.In 1974,he became the first agricultural (农业的) pioneer in the word to grow rice hat has a high output(产量).This special rice makes it possible to produce one﹣third more of the crop in the same fields. Now more than 60% of the rice produced in China each year is from the hybrid rice strain (品种,种类).He was born in Beijing in 1930.Since he graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953,finding ways to grow more rice has been his life goal.He searched for a way to increase rice harvests without expanding (扩大,增加) the area of the fields.
In a recent research, these increased harvests mean that 22% of the world's people are fed from just 7% of the farmland in China.India,Vietnam and many other less developed countries have planted super hybrid rice to increase their rice harvests.
Unluckily,he died on May 22,2021.Though he was ill in bed,he still cared about his rice in the fields. He always said,"A man is just like a seed. Please be a good seed."
