All living things need energy to live and grow. This energy comes first from the sun.Plants use water and sunlight to make their own food.Animals can not make their own food, and they eat plants.Other animals then eat the plant eaters.
A food chain shows what eats what.It might show that zebras eat grass and then lions eat zabras.
Lions also eat other animals.Zebras eat other kinds of plants. So it takes more than one food chain to show how lions and zebras get their energy.
A food web shows how food chains work together. From it we can see how energy moves from plants to animals.
Plants and animals that live in hot,dry deserts depend on water as well as food.Creosote bushes have small leaves that hold water.Their seeds provide food and water for kangaroo rats.Kangaroo rats don't need to drink water. They get all the water they need from the plants they eat.Kangaroo rats keep cool by coming out only at night to look for food.Ringtail cats also come out only at night.Ringtail cats hunt and eat kangaroo rats.Coyotes eat both the kangaroo rats and the ringtail cats.
Nothing is wasted in a food web,Vultures eat dead animals.Vultures are scavengers.Scavengers do not hunt and kill other animals to get food. They eat animals that are already dead. When a ringtail cat or a coyote dies,it makes a meal for the vultures.Scavengers do an important job in keeping the environment clean.

This year the US will honour (纪念)one of the country's most famous writers﹣Mark Twain (1835﹣1910).Most readers know that his real name was Samuel Longhome Clemens, but how many know where the pen name "Mark Twain" came from?
The answer shows Clemens' colourful early life before he became a writer."Mark Twain" was the cry shouted on a ship when the ship entered a part of a river that was two fathoms (6 feet)deep."Twain" is an old﹣fashioned way of saying "two".Twain trained as a ship pilot on the Mississippi river for two years,a time that he wrote about in the humorous Life on the Mississippi(1883).
The famous river would become an important theme in many of his works﹣who could forget the journey of Huck an Jim along it in his most famous book. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1884)?
With little education,he had to teach himself how to write stories.Whenever possible,he would go to public libraries. There he spent much time reading and thinking, which greatly helped him with his writing.
On the other hand, his life experiences gave him wonderful material to write about and attract readers.Twain wrote in a style that has been called "local colour" because it shows great knowledge of local people and their customs.
This gift is very clear in the two books for which Twain is still celebrated today:The Adventures of Tom Sawyer(1876)and its follow﹣up The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which many people call "The Great American Novel".

There are lots of dangerous and terrible insects in Northeastern India, but the tree﹣bees are the most terrible. They are killers.Unlike most bees which will sting (叮咬)you only if they are disturbed (打扰),tree﹣bees will attack you in thousands for no reason. And they will chase(追赶) you for your life.
Walking along a dusty road while I was on holiday there last year.I found myself, without the least warning, the centre of such an attack. The air above me suddenly became thick with bees.Though it was hot.I went cold all over.Until then I had never heard of Indian tree﹣bees, but I had recently seen a film called "The Angry Swarm". which was about killer﹣bees.
I began running to the village about half a mile away, but I was soon covered from head to foot with bees.I drove them away with my hands, only to make room for others. Each time I opened my mouth tor breath, more bees entered my mouth, until it was stung to twice its usual size and I could hardly breathe.
When I reached the village.I found some workers building a house.I ran towards them for help. But as soon as the workers saw the bees with me.they ran for safety at top speed.
Soon my eyes had completely closed.I fell into a pile of brick dust.I pushed myself wildly down into it until my head and shoulders were covered. And then I found myself in a worse situation﹣the dust nearly stopped me from breathing. When I tried hard to get out of the dust, the angry bees made a new attack on me.I was tired out and ran weakly about in circles.Soon I lost my consciousness (意识).
Later I learned that two quick﹣minded villagers ran to a pile of dry grass and quickly surrounded (包围)me with a thick wall of fire and smoke until the bees were driven away. They stayed with me,taking stings out of my body for the next three hours until a doctor came and gave me further treatment.

The first time I ever really noticed a disabled person,I was studying in the third grade.I saw some disabled people before, but I never really knew or cared about what those persons go through(经历).
When a new student arrived in my third grade class,I thought it would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism(孤独症).He sometimes had random outbursts (随意的发作)during class and we would stand there, doing nothing because we didn't know why he was doing that. When he sat down at desk,we would try to get away from him. After class,we would play jokes on each other, imitating(模仿)Derek, and laughing about it.
Then one day,Derek's mom came to our class and talked with us.She told us that Derek wasn't just having random outbursts﹣he was trying to communicate. Then she chose a volunteer and filled that person's mouth with soft sweets. When we found the volunteer had great trouble in trying to speak, the mother explained that was what Derek was going through every day.We all understood her meaning.
After this talk,no one tried to make fun of Derek or run away from him.We accepted his outbursts in class and he became one of our friends.Having a class with Derek has taught me to have an open mind to those who are different from us.My experience in having an autistic classmate has provided me with a good lesson.

During my first two weeks at the University of California,Berkeley,I experienced some unexpected, funny, and sometimes embarrassing(令人尴尬的) situations.Allow me to share some with you.
But first, let me give advice to other foreign students who plan to study in the United States.Check the weather before coming! I was very sure that California was sunny all year around so I left all my jackets and sweaters in Paris. It was a huge mistake! It rained almost every day during the first week in Berkeley.
I have to say that I quickly forgot these unlucky events.Life in Berkeley is very pleasant and everything is so easy compared to Paris. For example,in only 24hours I bought a mobile phone and made the lease(租约) agreement for a flat. What's more, almost all the shops are open on Sunday, which is very practical for me.
The first thing that surprised me is that students may come late to class. They freely enter and leave the classroom many times during class,In France, students respect the teacher's lesson,so they are never late and they leave the classroom only at the end of the class.
The local people in California are in general very nice, open and active,However,I am not totally used to their habits yet.Indeed,I was used to shaking my friends' hands every day in France.During my second day at Berkeley,I shook the hand of one of my classmates whom I had met the day before and he told me "I think we already met!"
Another funny story happened during the first party I attended:A girl that I meet before came to hug me.I thought she wanted to kiss me like we usually do in France to say hello. So I kissed her and she seemed a little bit embarrassed.

The most unusual thing you've ever seen.

The coffee comes out as smooth as silk.
He makes cappuccino with chocolate on top.
The coffee he makes is as good as the shop.
He can make short black as well as long.
Dad likes his coffee hot and strong.
Mum says that coffee's not good for me,
If I want something hot to have Milo or tea.
But in summertime when the weather is hot.
Dad makes iced coffee﹣I like that a lot!

Globalization means that people, ideas, technology, money, services and many other things are moving between countries and changing the way people think and act.
Not everyone thinks the same way about globalization. Some people think it is bad,and some people think it is good. Some believe that globalization helps rich people get richer and makes poor people poorer. These people say that globalization helps big companies like Coca﹣Cola and McDonald's destroy(破坏)local businesses. However, the people who think globalization is a good thing argue that globalization helps poorer people to become richer. They also think that it doesn't destroy local cultures. These people also believe globalization helps prevent wars. This is because countries with economic(经济的)connections will try hard to keep good relationships so that their economies aren't destroyed.
Whether you think globalization is good or bad,it affects the world in two areas:jobs and cultures.
Globalization has had a very strong influence on jobs all over the would. For some workers, such as engineers, lawyers and bankers, globalization has been a good development. These workers are able to successfully compete(竞争)globally and have seen an incrase in their pay.But for those who work in factories or in the aervice industry(at hotels, shops and restaurants),it has not been good.Workers from poorer countries are trying to get these types of jobs. They will do the same job for less money. This decreases the pay for that job,so people get paid less to do it.
Cultures have also been affected by globalization.Foods such as Japanese noodles,Indian curry and French cheeses have spread around the world. We can also see an increase in the use of Chinese characters(汉字)in tattoos(文身).Some people get these tattoos but they don't really know what the characters mean.Globalization also affects the film industry. Most people have seen American movies. But because of globalization,Korean.Indian and Japanese movies have become more wouldwide.
No one knows the future of globalization. Most experts agree that it will continue to grow and have an increasingly greater influence on people's lives in the future.
