President John Adams started the library in 1800 for members of Congress. He wanted them to be able to red books about law.The first 740 books were bought in England. An Interview with Andy Griffiths

Andy Griffiths is well known as a writer of children's books. Here are some interesting things you might not know about him.

What do you like to do after a long day of writing?

I go for long runs and bike rides beside the beach. An hour of exercise after a long day of writing gives me energy. Then I'm ready to write some more.

Do you write using a computer or by hand?

What super power would you like to have?

X﹣ray vision(影像) if I can control it.

What is your favorite food?

I'm never happier than when I'm drinking banana milkshakes. And I love fish. But I don't like drinking fish milkshakes. Theyare just terrible!

What is your favorite book?

Alice in Wonderland. It has so many surprises and such silliness in it.

Do you write for adults too?

Only if I really have to. I much prefer the freedom and fun of writing for children.

What do you say to kids who say, "Why should I read?"

As Dr. Seuss says, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go."

Today almost everyone has a smart phone. So street phone booths are out of date and seem to be useless. But cities like Shanghai are trying to bring the old phone booths to life.

Shanghai will make changes to 263 phone booths in Xuhui District. The Library Booth is one of the six new kinds of booths, offering 60 booths for people to borrow and read. Another kind allows users to listen to audiobooks( 有声书)and even record their own voices.

Shanghai is not the only city trying to save the old phone booths. London cares about them even more, because the red booths have long been a special scene in London since the 1930s when they were painted all red. In recent years London has come up with many ideas to help phone booths stay useful. The UK company British Telecom has added screens and free WiFi to some booths. Users can use them to surf online and search for maps and weather reports. The company also allows people to rent(租)some booths to change them as they want to. Since 2009, more than 1,500 phone booths have been turned into flower shops, mini﹣cafes, art museums and even shower rooms.

In New York City, three phone booths in Time Square are turned into places for immigrant(移民) voices. When visitors pick up the phone, they can listen to oral(口述) histories of immigration from the newest New Yorkers. They can also open the books inside the booth to know more about the storytellers. Or they can share a part of their own stories if they wish.

Brazil made phone booths works of art. Sao Paulo paired 100 artists with 100 phone booths. Some artists painted on the booths, others made them sculptures﹣ one was shaped like a brain and another wore a pair of shoes.

Phone booths are finding creative ways to live on. Will they succeed? Only time will tell.

Keep More Food on the Table

It's said that in some parts of the world, people are facing the problem of hunger. So what can we do to help them? Here are some suggestions:

Cook from the fridge

Start with the fresh foods. If you have some in the fridge, use them first.Make a meal with what you have got instead of running out to the supermarket for something else.

Learn to read the labels

"Best﹣before"and"use﹣by"dates are more important.Learn to know the different periods of foods and know how to cook them in the right way.For example, black bananas are proper for baking, fresh vegetables are good in soups, and bread that is not fresh can be turned into small pieces.

Use the freezer(冷冻室)

The freezer can keep foods fresh until you are ready to cook them, and store the cooked foods until you're ready to eat them. It's also the best place for the remaining food.Mark the date of the food nearby,so it's easy to find the foods you need to eat first and you will never leave them there for too long.

Shop with a list

Plan meals ahead of time so that you know exactly what to buy.Doing this helps reduce food waste because it's possible to buy too much of a certain food and then forget to eat or cook it later.

As the saying goes, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." This is the way the charity organization Heifer International(国际小母牛慈善组织) wants to end world hunger.

It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need.He tried to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what they needed was "not a cup, but a cow".

Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He believed giving animals and providing training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer

International was set up.

On Heifer International's website, you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and

even fish and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies. With more and more animals, these families will be able to support themselves. Once these families get better lives, they will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources(资源) for programs run by Heifer International to help more families.

The programs also help small﹣sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal's first female (雌性)baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals' health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule.

However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on working together, helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.
