Dear Nancy,
You asked about places to go and things to do in our town. The Downtown Mall is always 51 . It’s a 52 place in the oldest part of town. There are some good stores and restaurants there. 53 , Trendy Clothing Store is in Downtown Mall. It’s a fun place to shop, and it has the 54 quality clothes. The shop assistants are friendly 55 people. My favorite 56in town is Nick’s Restaurant. It is close to my house. It’s cheap and the hamburgers there are great. I like Dragon City Restaurant, 57 . You can eat wonderful noodles there and the beef noodles are the most delicious! You must try the dumplings there, too. But it’s more expensive than Nick’s. The Big Cinema is the best cinema in town. It has the biggest screen and the most58 seats. The Del Ray Complex is also a good place to see movies. It doesn’t have the59 movies, but the tickets are the cheapest.
Anyway, there are lots of things to do and to see here. Come for a 60 soon!

A habit is any action that we have performed so often that it becomes something that we do almost without thinking. Some of them are thought to be bad habits. People spend countless hours and dollars each year trying to get rid of these bad habits but often fail. Why? Change is hard work and there is no shortcut to achieve it. However, there is still some advice for you to follow.
First, look at why you do it. In other words, what’s the result of doing this thing? If your bad habit is shouting at people when you are unhappy or under pressure, what do you get from it? It may make you feel a little better for the moment. Or maybe you have a bad habit of leaving your homework undone. The result could be that you get more time to spend on the Internet!
Next, take a look on the other hand. What are you losing because of your habit? Shouting at other people is a bad habit because it makes people around you feel bad and unhappy. Leaving your homework undone is a bad habit because you may be punished by your teacher. Having more Internet time means that you are losing the chance to learn the things that you need to learn. When you think that way, you’ll find that it’s not wise to keep your bad habit! Now it is time to make a decision. What will you choose? I’m sure you will choose to do what you think is more important.
From the first paragraph we know that __________.

A.a habit is a terrible thing that we can never change
B.people take countless hours and dollars to get rid of habits
C.none of the people who try to break bad habits are successful
D.though it is difficult, we can still do something about our bad habits

The underlined sentence “there is no shortcut to achieve it” means that __________.

A.it is not easy to get rid of bad habits
B.there is a long way and a short way
C.something dangerous may happen
D.we must cut it in a short time.

According to the reading, if you want to get rid of your habits, you have to __________.

A.talk to others when you are in low spirits
B.know why you do what you do
C.finish your homework first
D.spend less time on the Internet

Which of the following does NOT happen because of a bad habit according to the reading?

A.You are punished later.
B.Making people around you feel unhappy.
C.You feel a little better after shouting at others.
D.You leave your homework at home by accident.

The main purpose of this passage is to __________.

A.introduce and describe B.complain and disagree
C.explain and advise D.discuss and argue

I do not need a calendar to tell me when it is winter. All I need is my nose. When I wake up in the morning and smell the tasty treats my mom is cooking downstairs, I know winter has arrived.
The first one is the smell of chocolate. During the holiday season (from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day) my mother makes her special hot chocolate. She always adds a peppermint candy cane (薄荷味拐棍糖) to the drink and tops it with cream.
The hot chocolate gets me out of bed, but it is my mother’s chocolate fudge (软糕) that makes me run downstairs. It is a thick chunk (块) of chocolate that tastes like heaven. My mother adds nuts. That gives it more texture (质感).
But my mother isn’t done yet. She also makes a treat she calls “window panes (窗玻璃)”. She takes a few different colored marshmallows (棉花糖) and melts them together with chocolate. The final product looks like a colorful church window, so we call it “window panes”.
These tasty holiday treats are usually eaten after a meal as a dessert. But don’t tell Santa Claus because I secretly eat them all day long.
What wakes “me” up in the morning?

A.The alarm clock. B.My mom. C.The noise upstairs. D.The smell of food.

In the author’s eyes, the taste of the chocolate fudge is ____.

A.terrible B.wonderful C.awful D.so so

With nuts, the chocolate fudge tastes _____.

A.softer B.sweeter C.harder D.hotter

The “window panes” the author mentions refer to _____.

A.special hot chocolate drink B.decorations on the window
C.chocolate cake with fruits on it D.a mixture of marshmallows and chocolate

Why does the author look forward to the winter?

A.There is plenty of time to play around. B.The food his mom cooks is mouthwatering.
C.It’s great fun to play outdoors. D.He can have a good rest during the winter.

Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘录) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping (饶舌音乐) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (投篮) during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit(承认) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged (泄气), and you feel like other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
Why does Barack Obama mention (提到) JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the fourth paragraph?

A.To compare these two famous persons.
B.To explain that writing and sports are difficult skills.
C.To show that the two persons were treated unfairly.
D.To prove that failure is the mother of success.

Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.No one can be successful without working hard.
B.Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.
C.Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help.
D.One should try his best to make his dream come true.

Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?

A.One should change his mind when others give honest advice to him.
B.One should believe in himself no matter what difficulty he is faced with.
C.One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times.
D.One doesn’t have to take others’ advice when they get away from him.

Cats are the most popular pets among Americans. So it is not surprising that there are a lot of expressions about cats. Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries (金丝雀). If someone looks very proud and satisfied with himself, we say “he looks like the cat that ate the canary.”
Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches. So if you “play cat and mouse” with someone, it means that you change between different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. For example, a girl might offer something sweet to her little brother and then take it away when he reaches for it.
Americans might say that something is “the cat’s miaow” or “the cat’s pajamas(睡衣)” to describe something that is the best or finest. “A copycat” is someone who acts just like someone else or copies another person’s work. “A fat cat” is a person with a lot of money.
If you tell about something that is supposed to be a secret, we say you “let the cat out of the bag”. If you are not able to speak or answer a question, someone might ask you if “the cat has got your tongue(舌头)”
Have you ever watched children in a classroom when their teacher leaves for a few minutes? “When the cat’s away, the mice will play” means people sometimes act badly when there is no supervision (监管).
You may have heard the expression “curiosity killed the cat”. This means caring too much about things that are not your business might cause problems.
If you have ever had cats as pets, you know it is difficult to train them or to get them to do something. Cats are not like Sheep or cows that can be moved in a group. So we say a difficult or impossible job is like “herding (放牧) cats “
What can we learn from the passage?

A.The expression “a fat cat” is used to describe someone who is very fat.
B.The expression “play cat and mouse” usually means “play tricks on others”.
C.It is more difficult to keep sheep or cows than cats.
D.There are more expressions about cats than those about dogs.

In which of the following situations do we most probably use the expression “curiosity killed the cat”?

A.Someone always asked a lady her age or weight and it made her angry.
B.Someone promised to keep a secret but he failed to do so.
C.Someone won the first prize in an English singing competition and he felt very excited.
D.Someone tried to swim across the Yangtze River with his newly broken legs.

Where can you most probably find the passage?

A.In a scientific research paper about cats.
B.On a website telling people how to keep cats.
C.In a magazine telling various jokes and funny stories.
D.In a language book that teaches students how to use American slang.
