Celebrities (Famous people) have joined college students around China in the latest government activities to protect the environment. The Great Wall was the focus of attention, with a clean-up of the surrounding area, and tree planting. The volunteers hope their actions can raise public awareness about environmental protection.
Lots of famous people take part in the activities. Familiar faces including film star Jackie Chan and TV host Yang Lan from Hong Kong were at the Great Wall. Over 200 college students joined them. They’re all volunteers for a government sponsored (主办) environmental protection program.
A latest government report warns, China’s fragile (易脆的) environment and limited resources could hardly support economic development in the next five to ten years. However, Chinese citizens have long neglected environmental protection. Organizers hope these young people will influence people around.
Pan Yue, vice minister of State Environmental Protection Administration, said, “The government can only make policy. But environmental protection also depends on public participation (参与). Public figures, ordinary people and the government should all join hands, thus we can make a beautiful and friendly environment.”
Around the country, over 10,000 college students joined their peers in Beijing ---- planting trees, raising awareness about water protection and cleaning rubbish from rivers.

Most young people enjoy some physical activities. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, such as football, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who enjoy climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, such as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be too dangerous to ignore, but this freedom from man-made rules makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. Perhaps we should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between teams of climbers, but when climbers are climbing on a rock by a rope ,there is obviously team work. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities. So we can also call it a “team sport”
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
72. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Differences between Golf and Mountaineering.
B. Sports and Games.
C. Mountaineering.
D. Why are so many people crazy about mountaineering?
73. The mountaineering can also be called a team sport because ____.
A. mountain climbers usually compete in groups
B. mountaineers depend on each other while climbing
C. mountaineering climbers are free to use their won rules to climb
D. mountaineering is a sport not a game
74. The biggest difference between golf /football and mountaineering lies in ____.
A. team game B. enjoyment C. age D. rules
75. In the author’s opinion, one of the most important reason why so many people enjoy mountaineering is that ____.
A. there are no man-made rules for mountaineers and people can join in at different ages.
B. mountaineering is a sport and not a game
C. it is one of the most dangerous sports
D. mountaineering brings us more enjoyment than other sports

Many Chinese students who have learnt English for more than ten years are still unable to speak English very well when they meet a foreigner. They seem to have mastered the basic language structure, but a conversation in English will make them feel uneasy. They are afraid that other people might find out their mistakes.
It's unusual that many students who are bad speakers of English can write English perfectly. This proves that they are unable to organize their idea in English. The center of the problem is that they lack practice and confidence.
Why should you be afraid? Do you fear those foreigners with whom you are speaking? Don't be shy, they will not laugh at you just for a little mistake you make. The best way to get rid of trouble is to learn to speak by speaking more. I am sure that constant(经常的) practice will help you succeed.

Our eating habits are very important for good health and a strong body. There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice-cream than meat and rice. Sweets and ice-cream are not bad if we eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite (食欲). It is important for us to eat our meals at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it is a sign that our body needs food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago, in England, some judges used to decide whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not eat the bread, it showed that he was telling lies. Although this seems very strange and rather foolish, it is indeed a very good way of finding out the fact. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in eating anything dry. Because he is worrying, he loses his appetite and does not want to eat.

A 14-year-old girl was attacked by a grey bear while competing in a bike race. She managed to whisper the word "bear" to her rescuer. The girl suffered serious head, neck and leg wounds and is now in a dangerous condition in hospital. The girl was taking part in a 24-hour race through Bicentennial Park in Alaska when she was attacked by the bear. Bicentennial Park is next to Chugach State Park where the wild animals live. The bear attacked the girl in a heavily wooded area at about 1:30 am, during the darkest part of the night. The girl called emergency services but she was unable to communicate. Another rider Peter Basinger found her sitting dazed (神志不清的) on the ground. He told the Anchorage Daily Newsshe managed to say the word "bear" when he stopped to help. Her helmet (头盔) had been ripped off (撞掉) in the attack and rolled into the woods. Mr. Basinger waited with the girl for about 20 minutes until doctors arrived. Armed police trekked (长途跋涉) 3km with doctors to pick up the girl. Animal expert Rick Sinnott said something must be done as soon as possible to prevent the bear from attacking people again. "It had to be extremely terrifying, "he said. Mr. Sinnott told the Anchorage Daily News that the bear could have been a mother. It hurt two runners on a nearby path two weeks ago. He also said that the girl was lucky to have been wearing a bike helmet because the bear had bitten her head.

While staying with a family, I found their teenage son, David, aged 16, didn’t share his true feelings with his parents. If his parents were present when I asked him how he felt about things, he would look down or away or say something unrelated such as, "Today, I will go out. "or "Okay, I guess. "However, when we were alone he would open up and tell me how he felt. For example, while sitting at the dinner table, I asked him how he felt about his history class and the teacher. He thought for a moment but said nothing. I thought he was afraid to answer in front of his parents, so later I asked him again in private. He said, "On a scale (级别) of 0-10, it is a big fat zero. He is the most boring teacher I have ever had. "I asked him why he didn’t tell me this earlier. He said it was because his parents didn’t want to hear that. They just wanted to hear that everything was wonderful and they always told him to stop complaining.
This made me think a lot. My belief is that children are born with the desire to share feelings. I also believe they are born with perfect emotional honesty. Unfortunately, such valuable things are disappearing gradually. It really is a great loss, which I believe, will negatively affect both the children’s ability to know about themselves and their success in future relationships.
I see the situation as a missed opportunity, an opportunity for parents to get closer to their children, an opportunity to understand their children and to help them feel understood; however, communication gaps (分歧) have been made. Parents are more interested in "correcting" their children’s ways of expressing themselves than in getting to know their children.
70. We can know from the passage that _________.
A. David is not good at talking B. David likes showing his true feelings in public
C. David hates his parents D. David dislikes his history teacher
71. According to the author, children who don’t show their true feelings ____________.
A. won’t succeed in their future careers
B. will not have good relationship with their parents
C. won’t have clear ideas of themselves
D. will have no difficulty getting along with others
72. The author thinks that parents should ____________.
A. stop complaining about their children
B. try to understand their children’s true feelings
C. find more ways to communicate with their children
D. correct their children’s ways of communication
Most people seem to be passive at work. They do what they are told to do, and they don’t do what they are not told to do. In the end, one thing results: unmotivated (不积极的) people.
We’re employed to think. In fact, no matter how many times our bosses disagree with us, it is our responsibility to think for the company. There are lots of times when I disagree with my boss, and sometimes we even end up having arguments; however, I still offer my suggestions whenever I don’t agree.
Spending more time thinking also helps us to be more efficient (高效的) and helps to reduce our chances of frustration (挫败). Before I do something, I usually need some time to think about it to make sure that what I’m doing makes sense. This can be as long as a few days when a project is big, or as short as only a few seconds for a simple task. After thinking about a project, it sometimes becomes clear that a simple task could achieve the same result. In those cases, not only did I save myself from possible frustration, but I also felt happy and satisfied that I saved valuable resources for my company.
With so many people not taking time to think, it’s no wonder that many people are unmotivated. Today, I encourage you to think things over whenever you have a chance. At first, it might take a while, but once it becomes a habit, you will feel more motivated as you will be more valuable to the company.
73. It is suggested in the passage that people should _____.
A. stop arguing with their bosses B. seize every chance they meet

A. is a waste of time and resources B. can help people understand what others do
C. can help people impress their companies D. is a good way to improve efficiency
75. The author wrote this passage to ________.
A. persuade people to do what they are not told to do
B. encourage people to be more motivated
C. show people how to give different opinions
D. tell people how to form good thinking habits

Students who say they never or hardly ever used dictionaries often speak English well but usually write poorly, because they make many mistakes.
The students who use dictionaries most do not learn especially well either. The ones who look up every new word do not read fast. Therefore they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as translations of English. But one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has many translations in English.
The most successful students are those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100,000 words but do not use them too often. When they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea and understand new words from the context. Then they reread and use the dictionary to look up only key words that they still do not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (音节), they always use a dictionary. Also, if they think a noun might have an unusual plural form, they check these in a dictionary.
56. The writer tends to think that_____________.
A. choose a good dictionary, and you’ll be successful in learning English
B. dictionaries are not necessary to the students who learn English
C. it is very important for students to use good dictionaries properly
D. using dictionaries very often can’t help to improve writing
57. According to the passage, which of the following is wrong?
A. Dictionaries have little effect on learning to speak English.
B. Whatever new words you meet while reading, never use dictionaries.
C. Small two-language dictionaries have serious defects (缺陷).
D. Reading something for the first time, you’d better not use dictionaries.
58 This passage mainly tells us____________.
A. that students shouldn’t use small two-language dictionaries
B. what were the defects of small two-language dictionaries
C. why students should use large college edition dictionaries
D. what dictionary students should choose and how to use it
59. Which is not mentioned in this passage?
A. How to make good use of a dictionary.
B. When to use a dictionary.
C. How to improve spoken English.
D. How to practise reading fast.
Some people are lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they have only visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later.
I am one of those unfortunate people who have poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time but I still get lost on my way there. When I was young I was so shy that I never dared ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hope that by some chance I would get to the spot I was heading for.
I am no longer too shy to ask people for direction, but I often receive replies that puzzle me. Often people do not like to admit that they didn’t know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way, even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their hometown very well, will give you a long list of directions which you can not possibly hope to remember, and still others do not seem to be able to tell between their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction to that in which you should be going.
If anyone ever asks me the way to somewhere, I always tell them I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid giving them wrong direction but even this can have embarrassing results.
Once I was on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct him the way to the Sunlight Building. I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building. However, at this point, I decide it was too late to turn back and search for him out of the crowd behind me as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting.
Imagine my embarrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for directions of my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked.
60. What is the writer going to do when someone asks him for direction?
A. He will direct the right way to the person willingly.
B. He will reply to it by the means of being a stranger to the town.
C. He will give the very person long list of direction.
D. He is going to show the man an opposite direction.
61. Why did the writer consider himself to be an unlucky dog?
A. Because of his poor sense of direction.
B. Because he always forget the way to home.
C. Because he did not have any friend.
D. Because he used to be shy and dared not ask others the way.
62. How did the visitor feel when he was showed into the very room?
A. He felt strange. B. He felt embarrassed.
C. He felt very sad. D. He felt astonished.
63. Who showed the right way to the interviewee according to the passage?
A. Someone we don’t know. B. The writer did it for himself.
C. The secretary did so. D. A warm-hearted old lady did it.

“It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good.” These are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.
That was before we entered the permissive(自由的) period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.
Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students—“so passive”—and wonders what happened. Nothing was demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, contributes to children’s passivity. “We’re not training kids to work any more.” says Klompus. “We’re talking about a generation of kids who’ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them, Instead of saying ‘go and look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”
Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’s time to take the car away, to turn TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’s for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again.
67.To such children as described in the passage __________.
A. neither is easy to say yes or say no
B. it is easier to say no than to say yes
C. it is easier to say yes than no
D. neither is difficult to say yes or say no
68.We learn from the passage that the author’s mother used to lay emphasis on(强调;重视) ________.
A. natural development B. education at school C. learning Latin D. discipline
69.By “permissive period in education” the author means a time ________.
A. when everything can be taught at school
B. when children are permitted to receive education
C. when children are allowed to do what they wish to
D. when every child can be educated
70.The main idea of the passage is that _______.
A. It’s time to be more strict with our kids
B. parents should always set a good example to their kids
C. parents should leave their children alone
D. kids should have more activities at school
Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.
“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”
Music was not the only gulf (分歧). From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.
“There’s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving(演化的) roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.
“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”
72. Which of the following shows that the generation gap is disappearing?
A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.
B. Parents put more trust in their children’s abilities.
C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs.
D. Parents share more interests with their children.
73. The change in today’s parent-child relationship is ______.
A. more confusion among parents
B. new equality between parents and children
C. less respect for parents from children
D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents
74. By saying “today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” the author means that today’s parents ______.
A. follow the trend (趋势)of the change
B. can set a limit to the change
C. fail to take the change seriously
D. have little difficult adjusting (调整)to the change
75. The purpose of the passage is to ______.
A. describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with
B. discuss the development of the parent-child relationship
C. suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship
D. compare today’s parent-child relationship with that in the past

Will it matter if you don't have your breakfast ? A short time ago , a test was given in the United States. People of different ages, from 12 to 83, were asked to have a test . During the test , these people were given all kinds of breakfasts , and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Scientists wanted to see how well their bodies worked when they had different kinds of breakfasts.
The rules show that if a person eats a right breakfast , he or she will work better than if he or she has no breakfast. If a student has fruit , eggs, bread and milk before going to school ,he or she will learn more quickly and listen more carefully in class.
The result is opposite to what some people think . Having no breakfast will not help them lose weight . This is because they are so hungry at noon that eat too much for lunch . They will gain weight instead of losing it . You will lose weight if you reduce your other meals.

Millions of aircraft take off around the world every year. The skies they fly in seem limitless—miles of empty space. But, with the number of flights increasing each year, this emptiness no longer exists. Researchers in the world of aviation(航空)are worried about the increasing pressure on pilots and ground controllers. And increasing collisions, occurring at or near an airport, have called attention to the need for more aids(辅助设备)to aviation control.
People who travel the skies are not certain about air safety. A great deal of money is spent on new and bigger aircraft and airports to deal with the vast increase in passengers travelling by air. Only a small percentage of this money is spent on navigation(导航)and other aids. Actually, suitable electronic equipment has long existed, and many companies market safety aids designed to make it safer for aircraft to take off, fly any distance, and land, whatever the weather. Yet, there are two problems to be solved. The first is to get governments, airlines and airport officials to agree to basic levels of safety aids. The second problem is to find a way of meeting these basic requirements.
But no matter how well the equipment works, operators of the equipment still play an important role. Communications between pilots and ground controllers are extremely important to air safety. It is worth pointing out that the mishearing or misunderstanding of instructions in English and the use of another language, in an international conversation, have led to two recent aircraft accidents. A new type of instrument(仪器)called FLIGHTWATCH would help pilots prevent airport collisions. It would be particularly helpful near airports.
60. The increasing number of flights leads to the fact that ________.
A. flying is no longer limited in the sky
B. there is no empty space for aids to aviation control
C. piloting and controlling planes is getting more difficult
D. the pressure on the ground becomes greater
61. There is uncertainty about air safety because ________.
A. planes become bigger for the increasing number of passengers
B. money spent on electronic equipment is far from enough
C. suitable electronic equipment hasn’t been invented yet
D. it is dangerous for planes to take off or land
62. The underlined word “collisions” probably means ________.
A. accidents in which two planes hit each other
B. misunderstandings between pilots and ground controllers
C. quarrels among passengers
D. breakdowns of new types of instrument
63. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. governments and officials have paid great attention to air safety
B. there should be more companies to sell new safety aids
C. English should be used in an international conversation
D. understanding between pilots and ground controllers should be improved
Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes (工业园区)for the recycling of wastes within fifteen years. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants (居民) and discover exactly what raw materials go into and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste was built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead (铅) and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best way of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is completed, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets (磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.
The first full-scale (完全的) giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.
