Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of one of the country’s greatest machines was actually born in a log cabin,  1  to high school on horse back and without   2  of university degree(indeed, at age 14), thought of the idea of electronic television. In 1906 Farnsworth was born in a community near Beaver City, Utah,  3  by his grandfather.  4  he was 12, his family moved to a ranch (大牧场)in Rigby, Idaho, which was four miles from, the nearest high school,  5  necessitating(使成为必要)his daily horseback rides. Because he was interested in the electron and electricity, he persuaded his chemistry teacher, Justin Tolman, to give him   6  instruction and to allow him to listen to a senior course.
The death of his father forced him to leave at the end of his second year, but, as it   7  , at no great intellectual cost. There were, at the time, no more than a handful of men   8  the planet who could have understood Farnsworth’s idea for building an electronic television system, and it’s   9  that any of them were at this local community. One such man was Vladimir Zworykin who had moved to the US from Russia with a Ph. D in electrical engineering. He went to work for Westinghouse with a dream of building an all-electronic television system. But he wasn’t   10  to do so.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Love is blind”? If so, you are already   1   with a type of mistake in our attempts to understand others: halo effects. This type of mistake    2   to the fact that once we form an overall impression of somebody, it could have strong effects on our   3     of his personality.   4  ,  halo effects are both common and powerful. For example, most organizations contain one or more “superstars”--- people who have earned the reputation for being unusually   5    and capable. Once they have gained such a “halo”, everything they do receives good   6   . Ideas that would be regarded as just so-so if suggested by someone else are seen as    7   when proposed by these persons. And actions that might be considered risky if taken by others are seen as brave when carried out by these “chosen” men and women.
As you can see, halo effects carry high costs. They may lead some persons to have an   8     high opinion of their own worth, while making things  9   for others who are equally deserving. Further, by giving too much influence to persons who are not ready to receive it, and by preventing hidden talent from being   10   , they can harm organizations as well as individuals. Clearly, then, it is important to recognize the existence and impact of halo effects; only then can their harmful effects be avoided.

Recently I was invited to a friend’s house for supper —and had a meal I have never had before.
All the friends invited were a little surprised. It’s not that Ben is unsociable, or a bad cook, but it’s just that he never   21  more than he has to. So how come he was inviting us round for a meal? Had he bought something   22  for his friends? He greeted us at the door and showed us into his dining room where a   23 _ table was waiting for us.“Nothing but the best for my friends!”said Ben. We all sat down and looked   24   at each other —what was he up to?
Ben returned with four bowls of hot soup. “It’s a mixture of carrots, potatoes and tomatoes,”said Ben. The next   25  was also a little strange in that we didn’t quite know what it was again. It’s just another mixture of vegetable.
As we ate we chatted and finally the   26   turned back to what we were eating. ”Was there a recipe (食谱) for this,” asked Marina, “or did you   27   it up?” Ben put his fork down. “What I cooked depended on what I could find.” Marina was surprised. “But you can find anything in supermarkets these days.” “But there’s 28  choice in what you can find outside supermarkets,” he replied.
Seeing that we had all finished the food, Ben decided to tell the truth. He had read recently that supermarkets usually throw away 5 percent of their food every day. So Ben decided to look inside his local supermarket bins. There he found food that was slightly out of __29 , boxes of throw-away vegetables and fruit.
So Ben had successfully provided a decent (体面的) meal for his friends, and made us aware of the fact that there are many poor people who need the food, but the amount of food thrown away is enough to   30   millions of people.

She was diagnosed with clinical depression(抑郁症). I was very  9   at first, but with the late night calls, we still stayed in   10 . I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend   11  deserted her, since people were calling her   12 , and I knew I still   13 her like a sister.

We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never   20  your friends.

Tales of the supernatural are common in all parts of Britain. In particular, there was (and perhaps still is) a belief in fairies(仙女). Not all of these   21   are the friendly, people-loving characters that appear in Disney films, and in some folktales they are   22   and cause much human suffering. This is true in the tales about the Changeling. These tell the story of a mother whose baby grows   23   and pale and has changed so much that it is almost   24   to the parents. It was then   25   that the fairies had come and stolen the baby away and   26   the human baby with a fairy Changeling. However, hope was not lost even if the baby had been   28  . In those cases there was often a way to get the   29   baby back. Service learning is academic learning that also helps the community.    38    of service learning include cleaning up a polluted river, working in a soup kitchen, or tutoring a student.    39   a service experience, students must keep a journal(日志)and then write a   40   about what they have learned.
Supporters claim that there are many   41    of service learning. Perhaps most importantly, students are forced to think   42   their own interests and become   43   of the needs of others. Students are also able to learn real-life skills that   44    responsibility, problem-solving, and working as part of a team.   45  , students can explore possible careers   46   service learning.
For example, if a student wonders what teaching is like, he or she can choose to work in an elementary school classroom a few afternoons each month.  47   there are many benefits, opponents (反对者)   48   problems with the new requirement. First, they   49   that the main reason students go to school is to learn core subjects and skills. Because service learning is time-consuming, students spend   50   time studying the core subjects. Second, they believe that forcing students to work without   51   goes against the law. By requiring service, the school takes away an individual's freedom to choose.
In my view, service learning is a great way to   52   to the community, learn new skills, and explore different careers.   53   , I don' t believe you should force people to help others – the  54   to help must come from the heart. I think the best   55    is one that gives students choices: a student should be able to choose sixty hours of independent study or sixty hours of service. Choice encourages both freedom and responsibility, and as young adults, we must learn to handle both wisely.
