On a cold winter day, I waited in line to see my hero, Jack Canfield, the author of The Success Principles, who was going to deliver a speech on his new book.
During his talk, Jack 36 his wallet, pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, and said, ‘‘Who wants this?” 37 shot up in the audience; people leaned forward to see whom Jack would 38 . But I jumped up, ran up the 39 to the stage, and grabbed the bill. As I was launching myself in the air, 40 raced through my mind — was I about to be humiliated(羞辱) in front of 800 people? Would they 41 security guards and take me from the stage? 42 my desire for bold (大胆的)action was louder than any 43 voice. As I got the bill from his hand, he said, “That’s it! We can’t wait for the 44 to come to us. We must take 45 to create what we want!’’
After his talk, I 46 to formally meet Jack and boldly asked for his personal e-mail address. Over the next months, I sent him emails 47 my points of view and dreams with him. He kindly e-mailed back lots of encouragement. But my life got busy 48 other things. I stopped e-mailing Jack.
A year later, my dreams had worn away. I thought Jack would inspire me into action, like a giant arrow that would show me the way.
I e-mailed him, and then again — but got no 49 . As I sat down at my computer to 50 my e-mails, I 51 woke up. What was I doing? I was waiting! Now I remembered the crowd, most likely 52 that hundred-dollar bill, while they sat glued to their chairs.
Usually we all have a “Jack” for whom we wait — whether it’s a person, a place or a thing. We 53 believe the gifts of life are just around the corner, and that everything will come in a(n) 54 way. So we don’t try. We 55 . But as Wayne Gretzky said,“You’ll always miss 100% of the opportunities you don’t take!” So I stopped waiting and started my writing career.
Now what are you waiting for?

Passing Your Love On
Waiting for the airplane to take off, I was happy to get a seat by myself. Just then, an air hostess approached me and asked, “Would you mind 36 your seat? A couple would like to sit together.” The only 37 seat was next to a girl with her arms in casts(石膏绷带), a black-and-blue face, and a sad 38 . “No way am I going to sit there,” I thought immediately. But a soft voice spoke, “She needs help.” Finally, I 39 to move to that seat.
The girl was named Kathy. She had been in a car accident and 40 was on her way for 41 .
When the snack and juice arrived, it did not take me long to 42 that Kathy would not be able to 43 herself. I considered 44 to feed her but hesitated, as it seemed too 45 to offer a service to a 46 . But then I realized that Kathy’s need was more 47 than my discomfort. I offered to help her eat, and 48 she was uncomfortable to accept, she 49 as I expected. We became closer and closer in a short period of time. By the end of the five-hour trip, my heart had 50 , and the time was really 51 spent than if I had just sat by myself.
I was very glad I had reached 52 my comfort zone to sit next to Kathy and feed her. Love 53 flows beyond human borders and removes the fears that keep us 54 . When we stretch to serve another, we grow to live 55 a larger and more rewarding world.

This is love, hand in hand with you, old age to the old.
I made a promise to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a(an) 31 husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.
The 32 had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The 33 was quoting Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an 34 of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to 35 that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would 36 .
And it did, 37 from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks 38 on you.”
“Oh, Tom, you noticed,” she said, 39 and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. 40 the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn 41 a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, 42
then I thought she wanted to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the 43 flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the firm where I am a director. We visited the shell museum 44 I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole 45 passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went 46 with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn 47 me. “What’s the matter?” I asked her.
“Tom,” she said in a(an) 48 voice, “do you know something? I don’t….”
“What do you mean?”
“Well… that 49 I had several weeks ago … our doctor … did he tell you something about me? Am I dying?”
It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst into 50 .
“No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”

I was doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in a toy store. A nicely dressed little girl was 36 the teddy bears(泰迪熊) beside her father 37 she saw a little boy walk in and stop in front of the Pokémon toys. His jacket was obviously too small. He had money in his hand. 38 , it looked no more than five dollars at most. He was with his father as well, and 39 picking up the Pokémon video games. Each time he showed one to his father, his father 40 his head, “No”.
Rather 41 , the boy gave up the video games and chose a book of stickers 42 . After they walked away, the little girl ran over to the Pokémon video games. She excitedly picked up one 43 on top of the others, and raced down toward the check-out(结账处). I picked up my purchases and 44 the girl and her father.
Then, much to the little girl’s 45 , the little boy and his father got in line 46 her and me. After the video was paid for and bagged, the little girl 47 it back to the cashier(收银员) and 48 something to her. The cashier smiled and put the 49 under the counter(柜台). Landing in Perth was one of the most exciting moments of my life. I 3 then that there was no turning back. The family I would live with was waiting for me, and it would be only five days 4 the new school year started.
The Catholic school I 5 was different from my public school back in the States. The uniform code was very strict. We were only 6 to wear one bracelet, which had to be a watch and one necklace, which had to have a Holy Cross. I was quite intimidated(害怕的) at first, 7 never having been to a new school—even in the United States. Everything went 8 , though. The teachers were welcoming and the students were friendly.
The most unforgettable time of my term abroad was with forty-one other international exchange students traveling around Australia during our term break. Our 9 were as extensive as our nationalities: we traveled to Sydney, Canberra, Mildura, Coober Pedy, Uluru, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, Mount Isa, Airlie Beach, and the Cold Coast.
The few weeks we enjoyed together were crowded with 10 . We took a day-cruise on Darling Harbor and visited the Sydney Opera House. We slept in an “underground town”. We walked around the famous Ayers Rock and went sailing on the Pacific Ocean.
At the end of our 11 in Australia, we had three weeks of traveling time to share our stories and help each other deal with leaving. It was 12 that our last day together was filled with tears. We packed our camp, exchanged e-mail addresses, and gathered together for a final good-bye.
