Evelyn Glennie was the first lady of solo percussion in Scotland. In an interview, she recalled how she became a percussion soloist (打击乐器独奏演员) in spite of her disability.
“Early on I decided not to allow the   26   of others to stop me from becoming a musician. I grew up on a farm in northeast Scotland and began   27   piano lessons when I was eight. The older I got, the more my passion (酷爱) for music grew. But I also began to gradually lose my   28  .Doctors concluded that the nerve damage was the  29 and by age twelve, I was completely deaf. But my love for music never

“My   31   was to become a percussion soloist, even though there were none at that time. To perform, I   32   to ‘hear’ music differently from others. I play in my stocking feet and can   33   the pitch of a note (音调高低) by the vibrations (振动) I feel through my body and through my   34  .My entire sound world exists by making use of almost every   35   that I have.”
“I was   36   to be assessed as a musician, not as a deaf musician, and I applied to the famous Royal Academy of Music in London. No other deaf student had   37   this before and some teachers   38   my admission. Based on my performance, I was
39   admitted and went on to   40   with the academy’s highest honours.”
“After that, I established myself as the first fulltime solo percussionist. I
41   and arranged a lot of musical compositions since   42   had been written specially for solo percussionists.”
“I have been a soloist for over ten years.  43   the doctor thought I was totally deaf, it didn’t   44   that my passion couldn’t be realized. I would encourage people not to allow themselves to be   45   by others. Follow your passion; follow your heart. They will lead you to the place you want to go.”

When we read books we seem to enter a new world. This new world can be similar to the one we are living in, or it can be very    21   . Some stories are told   22   they were true. Real people who live in a  23  world do real things; in other words, the stories are about people just like us doing what we do. Other stories, such as the Harry Potter books, are not   24   . They are characters and creatures that are very different from us and do things that would be   25  for us.
But there is more to books and writing than this. If we think about it, even realistic writing is only   26   . How can we tell the difference between what is real and what is not real? For example, when we read about Harry Potter ,we  2 7   seem to learn something about the real world. And when Harry studies magic at Hogwarts, he also learns more about his real life than   28   . Reading, like writing, is an action. It is a way of   29   . When we read or write something ,we do much more than simple look at words on a page. We use our   30    --which is real—and our imagination—which is real in a different way --- to make the words come to life in our minds.
Both realism and fantasy(幻想)    31   the imagination and the “magic” of reading and writing to make us think. When we read    32  realistic, we have to imagine that the people we are reading about are just like us, even though we   33   that we are real and they are  34  . It sounds   35   ,but it works. When we read, we fill in missing information and   36   about the causes and effects of what a character does. We help the writer by   37   that what we read is like real life. In a way, we are writing the book, too.
Most of us probably don’t think about what is going on in our   38   when we are reading. We pick up a book and lose   39   in a good story, eager to find out what will happen next. Knowing how we feel   40   we read can help us become better readers, and it will help us discover more about the real magic of books.

friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was the  36   was he found himself unable to ask for help — his mobile phone went out of   37   as a result of exhausted (用尽的)battery. Nothing could be done but  to   38  in cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the   39  of the rescue.
It is almost   40   that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his   41   : "First of all I checked up my   42   conditions and found myself not in mortal (致命的)danger. As there was no   43  to call for help ,I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from  44   .In this way I dozed (打盹)off ."
His story put an end to my regret for the   45   of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men  46   to explore a mountain cave and got lost .   47   to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of  48   .Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion(筋疲力尽).According to the   49   people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the   50   of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to   51   themselves, they would probably sense a faint light glimmering (闪烁)not far away .
Don’t you think that you can compare it with   52   itself? When you meet with obstacles (障碍)in life and work ,you are lost in darkness.   53  you it’s unclear yet and you needn’t put up struggle   54   . It seems to be a negative (消极的)attitude,   55  a person who can afford to do so must have foresight as well as a great courage in the first place

American cities are   1    other cities around the world. In every country, cities reflect the   2    of the culture.
