Oseola McCarty spent more than 75 years washing and ironing other people’s clothes．As a laundrywoman, she was paid only a few dollars each time．Certainly nobody would consider her rich, so they were all amazed when Miss McCarty decided to donate $ 150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi．
The money was in fact her life savings．She could save such a large amount of money because she lived a very simple life．She never learned to drive, and when she wanted to go somewhere, she just walked．She never flew to anywhere till the donation，and in 50 years she had been out of the South only once．The house in which she lived was also a rather modest one her last uncle left her．Only after she became known in America did she begin to travel all over the country．Since then, she had been the subject of many interviews and articles and was even invited to the White House．
Her donation was for students who clearly needed financial help．She herself left school in the sixth grade and had never married or had children．She said to the reporters that the idea of helping somebody’s child go to college gave her much pleasure．

Time to give thanks
When it comes to Thanksgiving, turkey may be the first thing that comes to mind．It’s the right picture, but it’s not complete．
Celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November every year, Thanksgiving Day is a time for thanksgiving and feasts．It’s about expressing your gratitude to the important people and all the good things in your life．
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving with much warmth and keep many traditional customs．Here we introduce two of the rules Americans typically follow on this day．
1．Time for prayers and paying back
Thanksgiving Day has been associated with prayers in church and in homes for centuries．Attending church prayer services in the morning is the first step of many celebrators on Thanksgiving Day．The churches provide worship (礼拜) services and organize special events for the occasion．
Before Thanksgiving meals, some families gather together and read prayers to thank God for his kindness and the gifts he has bestowed upon (给予) them in the form of friends and family．
Some people also do voluntary community work on this day, as a way of paying back．
2．Family reunions and showing gratitude
Like China’s Spring Festival, preparing a big meal and bringing the family together at home is a long-standing tradition of Thanksgiving．Distances don’t really matter as relatives return home to be with their family, no matter how far away．

If you ask people what makes them happy, you will probably get many different answers but there are two fundamental things that will ensure happiness.
The first part of what makes people happy is growth. When you feel like you are improving your life, that’s when you are happy. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to constantly buy bigger and better things. You need to feel like you are growing on a personal level. You need to know that the essence of who you are is continually improving in some ways. Keep looking for ways to make yourself better today than you were yesterday. This can mean different things to different people but the point is that you have to feel like you are improving and getting better as a human being as time goes by.
The second part of what makes people happy is the sense of contribution. Everyone wants to believe that they were put here to do something great. As long as you know that by your being here, by doing what you are doing, you are helping someone somewhere, it will bring you happiness.
These are two ways of how to find happiness. Are these the only answers to what makes people happy? That depends on how you define happiness.
