Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was failing. Surprisingly, he could read. 21 his good reading skills, Steve had been failing since first grade. Steve was a big boy, yet, he went unnoticed... 22 Miss White.
Miss White was a smiling, beautiful, young lady. For the first time in his 23 life, Steve couldn’t take his eyes off his teacher; yet, 24 he failed. In the middle of the first term, the entire seventh grade was 25 for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and 26 to dream of other things, as the day passed slowly. One day, Miss White’s 27 voice broke into his daydreams. “Steve!” Startled (吓了一跳), he 28 to look at her. “Pay attention!” She began to 29 the test results. “You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “ 30 one boy, and it breaks my 31 to tell you this, but...” She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp 32 . “... The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
After that, Steve still 33 do his homework. “Just try it,” Miss White said one day. “Steve! Please! I care about you!” Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him? Someone, so beautiful and perfect, cared about him! Steve went home from school, 34 , that afternoon.
The following Monday he arrived at school on time, and waited for Miss White to enter the classroom. She walked in, all sparkle and smiles! Immediately, she gave a 35 on the weekend homework. Steve was the first to 36 his paper. With a look of 37 , Miss White took his paper. Steve walked back to his desk, his heart beating strongly within his chest.
Miss White’s face was in total 38 ! Suddenly, her face broke into a bright smile. The smartest boy in the seventh grade had just 39 his first test! From that moment 40 was the same for Steve.

We drove in silence to the 36 she had given me. “How much do I 37 you” she asked. “Nothing.” I said. “You have to make a living” she answered. “Oh there are other 38 ” I answered. An old man had been working for many years for a town. His job was to clear away natural waste from the pool water in the hills, which made up the lovely river flowing through the town nearby. Quietly and 36 , the old man guarded the hills, 37 the leaves and branches, and cleaned up the dirt that would have 38 and polluted the fresh flow of water . The town soon became a popular attraction for tourists. Elegant swans (天鹅) floated along the clear river and the view was so beautiful 39 words.
Years passed. One evening the town 40 met. As they reviewed the budget, one man’s 41____caught sight of the salary 42 being paid to the seldom seen keeper of the river. He asked , “Who is the old man? Why do we 43 to employ him? No one in town ever 44 him. For all we know, the strange keeper of the hills isn’t doing his job. His position isn’t 45 any longer.” Then they voted to 46 the man.
For several weeks, nothing changed….
By early autumn, the trees began to 47 their leaves. Small branches broke off and fell into the pools of the hills, 48 the flow of the shining water. One afternoon, someone noticed a slight yellowish-brown 49 in the river. A few days later, the water was much 50 . Within another week, an oily something covered some sections of the water along the banks, and a terrible 51 was soon sensed. Swans left and so did the 52 . The only thing that was now visiting the village was disease and sickness.
Quickly, the 53 town committee called a special meeting. Realizing their huge error in 54 , they rehired the old keeper of the river again, and within a few weeks, the river began to clear up. Swans and tourists came back again and new life returned to the small town in the Alps.
Never ignore the seeming smallness of a task, job or life. They may all make a 55 .

We were driving along the village of Simdara. I 36 to my right and saw an old shelter 20 meters from the side of the road that appeared to be filled with 37 .
“Would you mind 38 ?” I asked the driver Waris. “I think there is a(n) 39 .”
Waris laughed. “No, Greg, that’s actually a public toilet,” explained Waris and he kept 40 .
“But why are there so many kids? What are they doing there? We need to 41 ,” I insisted. The word caught Waris 42 and he stopped the car.
When we reached the shelter, to my surprise, it was 43 a toilet—or at least it had been at one time. The roof was gone now, and the four toilet pits (坑) had been 44 with old boards. There were 25 children between 4 and 5 years old, one 45 , and a wooden board against the wall.
Though having a tough learning environment, the students are quite 46 to chat with us about their class and curriculum (课程). After about ten minutes, the teacher 47 if we might like to see “the rest of the school”. We 48 and followed her up the hill.
Just over the top of the hill, there was an old tent. It was very 49 inside because nearly 100 students were packed like sardines (沙丁鱼). These students were a little 50 , fourth-, and sixth-graders, and all of them were sitting on the ground. 51 the teacher, they were doing extremely well — 52 most of them had no books, paper or even pencils.
We were forced to 53 to catch our plane. We were all 54 and decided to collect money to build a school for these children who had a hunger for 55 .

It was the last day of the final examination in a large eastern university. On the steps of one building, a group of engineering students were talking about the exam that was going to begin in a few 36 . On their faces was confidence . This was their last exam — then on to 37 and jobs.
Some talked of jobs they already had; others talked of jobs they 38 get. With the certainty of four years of college, they felt ready and able to take 39 of the world.
The coming exam, they knew, would be a(n) 40 task. The professor had said they could bring 41 books or notes they wanted, requesting only that they did not 42 each other, during the test.
43 they entered the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. And smiles 44 on the students’ faces as they noted(注意到) there were only five essay-type questions.
Three hours had passed 45 the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. Papers in hand, no one spoke as the professor faced the class.
He looked at the 46 faces before him, and then asked, “How many completed all five questions?” 47 a hand was raised.
“How many answered four?” Still no hands.
“Three? Two?” The students moved restlessly (不安地,慌张地)in their seats.
“One, then? Certainly somebody finished 48 .”But the class remained silent.
The professor put down the papers. “That is exactly what I 49 ,” he said. “I just want to impress upon you that, 50 you have completed four years of engineering, there are still many things about the 51 you don’t know. These questions you couldn’t answer are relatively(相对地,相当地) 52 in everyday practice. ” Then smiling, he added, “You will all 53 this course, but remember — even though you are now college graduates, your education has just 54 .”
The years have 55 the name of this professor, but not the lesson he taught.

When Julie was a child, she was a very big fan of animals. As a result, 36 she ever heard growing up was “Julie, you should be a vet. You’re going to be a great vet. That’s what you should do.” 37 when she got to the Ohio State University, she started studying to be a vet.
A scholarship allowed her to spend her 38 year studying abroad in Manchester, England. Away from the family 39 back home, she found herself one day sitting at her desk, surrounded by biology books and staring out the window, when it suddenly hit her: “I’m in total 40 . I don’t want to be a vet!”
41 she thought back over all the things she’d done in her life and what had made her happy. And then it hit her—it was all of the youth leadership conferences that she had volunteered 42 , and the communications and leadership courses she had taken as elective courses back at Ohio State. “How could I have been so 43 ? Here I am in my fourth year at school and just finally realizing I’m on the 44 path. I just never took the time to 45 it until now, ” she thought.
Inspired by her new 46 , Julie spent the rest of her year in England taking courses in communications and media studies. When 47 to Ohio State, she was eventually able to 48 the administration to let her create her own program in “leadership studies”, 49 it took her 2 years longer to finally graduate. She 50 to become a senior management consultant in leadership training and development for the Pentagon. She 51 founded a drug-prevention organization that 52 the message “Lead your own life with the skill and the 53 to say no.”

After attending a conference, I returned to my hotel room late one evening. The overhead light out- side my door was burned out and I had 36 finding the keyhole. When I 37 to open the door, I 38 around the wall for a light switch.I found a plate where a switch was 39 installed… but no switch!
Not discouraged easily, I remembered 40 a lamp by the bed when I deposited my luggage 41 in the day.I found the bed in the 42 and then the lamp, but when I switched it on ,nothing 43 ! More Than I Had Dreamed Of
From the time I was seven, I had a dream of becoming a member of the Students Union. I always 36 my school leaders for taking responsibility for all of us. So I dreamed of being a leader.
Years flew by, and soon I was able to participate in the elections, 37 I would win. But the reality struck that I hadn’t had a chance. I wasn’t pretty. Girls across the school hardly knew me. I just did not have what it 38 to win a school election. I was 39 .
As I cried in my room that evening, I 40 took a deep breath and decided I wouldn’t stop dreaming. I decided that I would 41 elections again in my final year at school—and I would win.
I recognized that my 42 had a lot of things in their favor. What were the 43 that would work in my favor? I had good grades, and I was friendly and helpful. And my biggest 44 was the faith I had. I would not allow my 45 appearance to hold me back from putting my best foot forward. That evening, I 46 my election plans a whole year in advance.
I realized that girls would have to get to know me and recognize that I had the ability to 47 them. I loved making friends and I liked being helpful, 48 I decided that perhaps I could use these qualities to work to my advantage. In order to learn how to present a great election 49 , I also attended a course on effective public speaking.
The day after the election, when the principal(校长) announced I won the second highest number of votes, the students 50 . That joy on the faces of all my friends showed me that my victory was 51 theirs.
Suddenly, I realized that I had 52 much more than I had dreamed of. I had made many new friends and had helped people 53 the way. I had won the 54 and love of my school-mates and they knew me as somebody who would stand by them. I was able to put a smile on their faces and 55 their day.

When I was a law professor, a student reported that I made an error in grading his exam by giving him too many points. He was 41 and after thanking him for his honesty, I changed the grade in my 42 . His beaming(欢笑的)face turned to shock."You're 43 my grade?" he said angrily."I would never have come in 44 …"
He didn't finish the 45_ , but it was obvious that his display of honesty was 46_ .He thought he'd have it all —praise and the higher grade.
Several colleagues thought I should have let the higher grade 47 because all I'd accomplished was to discourage him from being 48 in the future. And every time I tell this story, some people agree to this 49 .
But I can't see how I could give good reason for worsening my_ 50 in grading by undermining(损害) the honesty of all my grades by failing to 51 an error. The grade itself would be a dishonest 52 of his knowledge and it would have been 53 to other students. How could I 54 give a student a gift of an unearned grade?
I know 55 reporting an error in one's favor is unusual, but, like 56_ too much change, it's clearly the right thing to do.People of character, those with real honesty, hate to give up 57 as much as anyone else. The difference is that for them a good conscience and reputation is 58
enough to give reason for the cost of doing the right thing.
Perhaps lowering the student's grade did 59 him from being honest in the future, but bribing(贿赂)him to be honest so that he does the right thing when its cost-free would have 60 him even more. The duty to be honest is about right and wrong, not risks and rewards.

One morning Raman, a true master of the art of archery (箭术), invited his favorite student to watch a display of his skill. The student had 36 this more than a
hundred times before, but he still obeyed his 37.
Together, they went into a nearby wood and reached a tall 38. Raman picked a rose flower and 39 it on one of the branches of the tree. He 40 opened his bag and took out three objects: his 41, an arrow and a white handkerchief.
Raman stood one hundred paces from the spot where he had placed the 42. Facing his target, he 43 his student to blindfold (蒙住眼睛) him with the handkerchief. The student did as his teacher 44.
“How often have you seen me practice the sport of archery?” Raman asked him 45.
“Every day,” replied his student. “And you have 46 managed to hit the rose from three hundred paces away.”
With his eyes covered by the 47, Raman placed his feet firmly on the ground and 48 the bowstring (弓弦) with all his strength. Aiming at the rose on the 49, he let the arrow fly. The arrow whistled through the air, 50 it did not even hit the tree, missing the target by a few meters.
“Did I 51 it?” said Raman, removing the handkerchief from his eyes.
“No, you missed 52,” replied the student. “I thought you were going to 53 me the power of thought and your ability to perform magic.”
“I have 54 taught you the most important lesson about the power of thought.” replied Raman. “When you 55 something, concentrate only on that: No one will ever hit a target they cannot see.”

Even though it was only October, my students were already whispering about Christmas plans. With each passing day everyone became more 31 waiting for the final school bell. Upon its 32 everyone would run for their coats and go home, everyone except David
David was a small boy in ragged clothes. I had often 33 what kind of home life David had, and what kind of mother could send her son to school dressed so 34 for the cold winter months, without a coat, boots, or gloves. But something made David 35 . I can still remember he was always 36 a smile and willing to help. He always 37 after school to straighten chairs and mop the floor. We never talked much. He 38 just smile and ask what else he could do ,then thank me for letting him stay and slowly 39 home.
Weeks passed and the 40 over the coming Christmas grew into restlessness until the last day of 41 before the holiday break. I smiled in 42 as the last of them hurried out the door. Turning around I saw David 43 standing by my desk.
“I have something for you” he said and 44 from behind his back a small box. 45 it to me, he said anxiously, “Open it. ”I took the box from him, thanked him and slowly unwrapped it. I lifted the lid and to my 46 saw nothing. I looked at David’s smiling face and back into the box and said. “The box is nice, David, but it’ s 47 . ”
“ Oh no it isn’t ,” said David “ It’s full of love, my mum told me before she died that love was something you couldn’t see or touch unless you know it’s there .”
Tears filled my eyes 48 Ilooked at the proud dirty face that I had rarely given 49 to. After that Christmas, David and I became good friends and I never forgot the meaning 50 the little empty box set on my desk.

Not many foreigners can say that they have lived in China for as long as I have. It was August 2001 and I had just said 39 to my family and friends as I 40 to Los Angeles International Airport to catch my 41 to Incheon, South Korea which would then 42 me to Beijing. When I arrived in LA I was very excited and a little 43 because I didn't know what to 44 when I arrived in China. It 45 like receiving a wrapped gift and you had no idea what was in it 46 you opened it. As I 47 the Korean Airlines 48 desk I gave the attendant(空乘人员) my ticket. He looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, sir. This flight was yesterday." I was in 49 and lost for words. The attendant told me I had to wait several hours until they could 50 whether I could get onto another flight.
I was so afraid at this time that I called my mother and frantically(狂乱地) told her," I missed my flight! I don't think I can go to 51! I'm better off going back to Washington, DC!" That's when she 52 I call my leader in China and ask whether I could still go there. Looking 53 all of the papers I found a phone number and called the Beijing office. 54, my leader was there and assured me I could still join the group. Also, KAL had a seat for me on the next flight. So, after 24 hours and a 55 in Korea, I arrived in Beijing. I don't know what my feeling was, but I wasn't tired because I had finally arrived and I just wanted to look around the city. As I traveled to the hotel in the car I saw all the wonderful buildings, friendly people and interesting sites. I was so happy to be here.
