In eighteen thirty, only a few miles away from what is now the great city of Cincinnan, Ohio, lay a 36 and a
lmost endless forest.
The area had a few settlements 37 by people of the frontier. Many of them had already left the area for settlements further 39 the west.
But among those 40 was a man who had been one of the first people to arrive there.
He lived alone in a house of logs surrounded 41 all sides by the great forest. He seemed a part of the darkness and 42 of the forest, for no one had 43 known him to smile or speak an unnecessary word. His simple needs were 44 by selling or trading the skins of wild animals in the town.
His little log house had a single door. Directly 45 was a window. The window was boarded up(堵住). No one could remember a(n) 46 when it was not. And no one knew why it had been 47 . I imagine there are few people living today who ever knew the 48 of that window. But I am one, as you shall 49 .
The man's name was said to be Murlock. He 50 to be seventy years old, but he was really fifty. Something other than years had been the 51 of his aging.
His hair and long, full beard were white. His gray, 52 eyes were sunken. His face was wrinkled. He was tall and thin with drooping shoulders—like someone with many 53 .
I never saw him. These 54 I learned from my grandfather. He told me the man's story 55 I was a boy. He had known him when living nearby in that early day.

In college I had a part-time job at a shop downtown that sold doughnuts(a kind of cake) and coffee. The small shop, 36 on a block where a dozen buses stopped, it provided food to people who had a few minutes to wait for their 37 .
I 38 coffee in takeout cups and patiently waited on customers who’d point through the glass case and say, “No, not that one, the one two rows over.”
Every afternoon around four o’clock, a group of school children would burst 39 the shop. Adults would glance in, see the crowd and 40 on. I didn’t 41 if the kids waited for the bus in the shop.

Sometimes I'd hand out bus fare (车费) when a ticket went 44 — always repaid the next day. When ii snowed, the kids and I would wait 45 for a very late bus. They'd call their parents to let them know they were okay.At _ closing time I wouldn't 46 the door, and the kids and I would wait in the warm store until their bus finally arrived.

Being the only girl and a nurse 41 me at the top of the caregiver list. Taking care of a sick parent is very 42 , not at all like taking care of other patients. I have to 43 my own family to be here with Dad. I know this is 44 I need to be but it is still hard. I 45 abut 12-15 hours day taking care of him. I want to spend all of the time that I can with him because I know that our 46 left together is short.
At the same time, I find myself 47 that my brothers don’t help more. Sometimes, it is days between their 48 . they all have families of their own and busy lives but…so do I. My eldest brother does help some. He 49 at night. He comes in at 8 or 9pm and lets me go home. But he is up and 50 to hit the road at about 6 am. My 51 brothers pop in for 10-15 minute visits. It is 52 annoying. They say they 53 stand “to see Daddy this way” which I understand. It hurts me to see him so sick 54 weak, too. But …he’s our Dad. He has taken care of us our whole lives. I just 55 like we should all do our part to take care of him now.

For almost two months Dominic York, a 23-year-old hairdresser, wandered about hospitals all night, wearing a white coat and pretending he was a doctor. Yesterday he proudly claimed in 1 that despite his complete 2 of medical experience or qualifications, he had saved several people’s lives. He had even been allowed to assist a surgeon during an emergency operation on a patient who was 3 to die on something she had swallowed.
“I watched one of those TV dramas about a hospital and suddenly I 4 playing one of the roles myself. So I put on a white jacket and a stethoscope(听诊器)and walked around one of the biggest hospitals in London. “At first, I just 5 . Once you learn how doctors talk to patients, nurses and other doctors, it’s easy to 6 people in,” he said.
One of the patients he treated was Laura Kennan. She had been 7 by a car and fainted. When she 8in hospital, York was standing over her.
“He looked very professional. He told me his name was Doctor Simon. Then he gave me some sort of injection,” she said. And then he suddenly cleared off when a nurse asked who he was. She didn’t think there was anything wrong. “I would never have 9 he was a fake(冒牌货)if a policewoman hadn’t showed me his 10a week later. When the policewoman told me who he really was, I could hardly believe my ears.”
Judge Raymond Adams told York that he was “shocked and horrified” that he 11 with his cheating for so long and then 12 him to eighteen months in a special prison for criminals with mental disorders.
“I can only hope that this will not lead to 13 problems. After all, you will have considerable opportunity to study the 14 of the psychiatrists who will look after you while you are there. If you try to persuade people that you yourself are a 15 after you are set free, I shall make sure that you are given a much longer sentence.” Judge Adams warned York.

Blind from birth, I have never had the opportunity to see myself and have been completely dependent on the image I create in the eyes of others.
There are those who 36 that since I can’t see, I obviously also cannot 37 . Very often people will talk with me at the top of their lungs. Conversely to this, people will also often 38 , assuming that since my eyes don’t work, my ears don’t either. For example, when I go to the airport and ask the ticket agent for 39 to the plane, he or she will always pick up the phone and call a ground hostess in a very low voice. "Hi, Jane, wave got a 76 here." I have concluded that the word " 40 " is not used because they are unwilling to inform me of my condition of which I may not have been previously 41 .
On the other hand, others know that of course I can hear, but believe that I can’t talk. Once I became ill and was hospitalized. Immediately after I was 42 , I was wheeled down to the X-ray room. Just at the door sat an elderly woman(judging from her voice) asked the orderly(护工) who had been wheeling me:" What is your name?" “What’s your name?” the orderly 43 to me. "Harold Krents", I replied. "Harold Krents", he repeated. "When was he born?" "When were you born?"…This continued for about five minutes before I finally interrupted, "Look, this is absolutely 44 . OK, I can’t see, but it’s go to become pretty 45 to both of you that I don’t need an interpreter(翻译)." “He says he doesn’t need an interpreter," the orderly reported to the woman.
The 46 misconception of all is the view that because I cant see, I can’t 47 . I was turned down by over forty law firms, 48 my qualifications included a cum laude degree from Harvard Law School. The 49 to find jobs, the continuous 50 of being told that it was impossible for a blind person to 51 law, the rejection letter, not based on my lack of 52 but rather on my disability, will always remain one of the most upsetting experiences of my life.
53 , the Department of Labor issued laws that demand equal 54 opportunities for the disabled. The business community’s response has been 55 . The attitude towards the disabled is beginning to change.

eBooks still some way away from students
Twelve-year-old Tang Yin is one of the earliest students to test a digital textbook in China. The boy said he was a little 11 when he received the monochromatic(单色的) flat device in April, 2010, because he thought it should be a “ 12 cool” laptop. But Tan still cherishes(珍爱) his new equipment like “protecting my 13 ,” said the fifth grader. After all, not every student has the opportunity to 14 the eBook, which is worth $294 (¥2,000 yuan), he said.
The 50 eBooks, 15 by Taiwan eBook manufacturer Chuanqi Photoelectric Technology in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, enables one class at Yangzhou Sanyuanqiao Elementary School to be the 16 group of students in the Chinese mainland to replace their regular textbooks with electronic ones. Out of 1000 students, Tang’s class was the lucky 17 .
“Our school could not 18 the project without the company’s donation,” said Yuan Shishan, vice-headmaster of the primary school. 19 the digital book is considered environmentally friendly, because it replaces paper books and saves money in the long run, the price is much higher than most Chinese 20 can afford. Also, some technical defects, the21 of taking notes and monochromatic display, make the eBook fail to meet the expectations of students and teachers.
“There’s still a/an 22 way to go before the eBook really plays an important role in education,” said the headmaster.
According to Yuan, the annual average income of a 23 family in Yangzhou is about 20,000 to 30,000 yuan, and neither the parents nor the school can afford the 2,000 yuan 24 book.
The school doesn’t allow the students to take their eBooks to their homes. The devices are25 after class, and are locked in the headmaster’s office.
