My husband and I are both musicians. I took it 36 granted that one day our daughter Holly would learn to play an instrument.
In 2000 Holly fell 37 and the doctor said she may have been left 38 deaf. “She won’t be able to hear music in any shape or form,” said the doctor. It was a great 39 .
In 2001, her right ear was fitted with a cochlear implant --- electronic equipment that provides a sense of 40 for people who are completely deaf. Seven years later, another was fitted in her 41 ear. The doctors played us a model of what music would sound like to Holly --- I was horrified42 it was just white noise.
“Holly will hear music,” I 43 saying to myself. I tried to put what had gone wrong right, so we constantly 44 words and sounds to her. She has been having lessons since she was seven . she’s 45 all the time. I’m always surprised by just how much better she does.

I was determined that her life would not be 54 by a miserable event, but never imagined that she could 55 what she has. I can only describe this as a miracle.

Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping 36 he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in 37 . He knows what he wants, and his goal is to find it and 38 it. All men 39 walk into a shop and ask the shop assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock(库存), the deal can be done and 40 is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat to everyone’s 41 .
For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop doesn’t have what he wants. In that 42 , the salesman tries to sell something else—he 43 the nearest to the article required. A good salesman brings out such a substitute(替代品) 44 , and he may say, “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It 45 to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have 46 with this treatment, and the usual response is “This is the right color and may be the right size, but I shouldn’t be 47 my time and yours by trying it on.”
For a woman, buying clothes is always done in the 48 way. Her shopping is not often 49 on need. She has never fully decided what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always 50 to persuasion, willing to try on any number of things. Deep in her mind is the thought of finding something that 51 thinks suits her. Most women have an excellent sense of value and are always on the look-out for the unexpected 52 . Faced with a roomful dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another 53 selecting the dress she wants to try on. It is a tiresome process, but apparently a(n) 54 one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting 55 .

It was 4 o'clock in the morning when I received the phone call.
“This is the emergency room calling and your son was just 41 in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms.We have called for a(n) 42 and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college,so we knew immediately this was 43
The doctor described the 44 ,which caused the burns. At 6 am,our son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they 45 the charcoal(木炭),it burst into flames because they had sprayed too much gasoline(petrol). The flames 46 my son’s shirt tail and shot from his waist to well over his head.
47 ,one of the boys was quick-minded,grasped my son,and 48 him on the grass. While it saved his life,it was not in 49 to save him from severe burns and the terrible scars(伤疤).
After he 50 from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery(整容)for 6 months 51 it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking and wrinkling. So,he had to return to college with scars typical of severe burns.
When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch, very 52__ scar on her arm,“Nancy,if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it.It does not mean they will not 53 it,but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.’’

But you see, people will only judge you by your looks,or your clothes,if you are judging yourself by these same 59 standards.Put your imperfections out of your mind and concentrate on what you value 60 yourself, and your beauty will shine through.

When studying in a middle school,I read a quote that went something like:“If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right. ”It made a deep 36 on me, and since then, for the past 33 years,I have 37 in the mirror every morning and asked myself:“If today were the last day of my life, 3 8 I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a 39,I know I need to change something.
