Eighty-year-old retired tailor, James McKay, spent Saturday night in jail after 31 thirty-year-old Keith Smith over the head 32 his walking stick.McKay's wife, Laurence told us that while McKay is usually a 33 person, he had been 34 to this act of violence by getting wet just once too often.
Smith lives above the McKays and it appears that not only is he a keen gardener, he is also a 35 collector. Unfortunately for him, the water he sent over his balcony every day ended up on the McKay's, or too often, on the McKays 36 .
“For the last fortnight, since Smith moved into the flat above us, we have hardly dared to go to our37 ,” said Laurence. She added that it wasn't so much the water falling onto their balcony from Smith watering his plant 38 bothered them, it was more the way he cleaned his fish tanks.“We'd be 39 there happily reading our newspapers, when 40 so much water would come from above that we'd be as wet as if we'd 41 with our clothes on! Neither could we get rid of the 42 of fish!”
And on Saturday evening it was just too 43. “It was James's birthday,” explained Laurence, “and I'd made him a birthday cake. The candles were a great sight as you can imagine, but James didn't get to blow them out.” 44 , Smith emptied one of his larger tanks over his balcony and both the McKays and the cake were wet 45.Rarely had Laurence seen McKay move so fast.“I couldn't 46 him.He was up there in a flash. It was the fastest I'd seen him move since 1964.”
Smith is not going to take things further with the police. He has also promised to change his 47 from now on.And what of James McKay? 48 he left the police station, a large crowd of supporters sang him, “Happy Birthday”.“49 the most exciting birthday 50 !” said the cheerful old man.“The best since my adolescence I'd say!”

I was doing some last-minute Christmas shopping in a toy store. A nicely dressed little girl was looking through the teddy bears beside her father 38 she saw a little boy walk in and stop in front of the Pokémon toys. His jacket was obviously too small. He had money in his hand. 39 , it looked no more than five dollars at most. He was with his father as well, and 40 picking up the Pokémon video games. Each time he showed one to his father, his father 41 his head, “No”.
Rather 42 , the boy gave up the video games and chose a book of stickers 43 . After they walked away, the little girl ran over to the Pokémon video games. She excitedly picked up one 44 on top of the others, and hurried down toward the check-out. I picked up my purchases(购买物) and 45 the girl and her father.
Then, much to the little girl’s 46 , the little boy and his father got in line behind her and me. After the video was paid for and bagged, the little girl 47 it back to the cashier(收银员) and 48 something to her. The cashier smiled and put the 49 under the counter(柜台). I was putting things in my bag when the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier said, “Congratulations. The little girl and her father had been standing at the doorway, and I saw the biggest and prettiest smile on that little girl I have ever seen in my life.
I suddenly understood that the world is not 51 into the strong who care and the 52 who are cared for. We must each in turn care and be cared.

"Everything happens for the best, "my mother said whenever I faced disappointment, "If you36 on, something good will happen some day."
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college. I had 37 myself for a sports announcer. So I went to Chicago to knock on the door of every station and was 38 every time. In one station, a kind lady told me that 39 stations wouldn't employ a person without 40 since I had just graduated. "Go out in the town and find a small station that might give you a chance, "she said.
I returned to Dixon, where I had finished my high school education and had 41 in the school football team. My father said that our town had built a store and wanted a man to manage its sports department. The job sounded just 42 for me but I wasn't hired.
My disappointment had 43 as if by design. "Everything happens for the best," Mum 44 me. Dad lent me his car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio Davenport. The program director told me they had already hired an announcer. 45 I left his office, I asked aloud," 46 can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" Suddenly, I heard the director 47 . "Do you know anything about football? " Then he asked me to 48 an imaginary game. It was easy, and I did it without difficulty. The director was 49 and told me I would be broadcasting a game on the 50 Saturday.

It was a cold winter’s night when I stopped for gas on my way home from work. I was tired and had a slight 36 .
I worked in a 37 doctor’s office and this was one of those days when the unexpected happened, making the schedule run 38 than usual. It seemed I was going to be late 39 home and my husband, being the 40 person, would be ready to pronounce me late once again. Maybe 41 I hurried, I could still make it home.
I was heading inside to 42 for my gas when I noticed an older couple at the counter. I heard them asking for 43 to the local hospital. It was the same hospital that I had just 44 a few minutes ago.
The young man at the counter was trying to be 45 in explaining how to get there, with two other people making 46 . One of them was 47 trying to give them a whole different route back. It was then that I walked over to the couple and said, “Would you like to follow me to the 48 ?”

“I’m going right by there,” I said, which wasn’t a(an) 50 since I had just made up my mind to do 51 that.
I got in my car and began the journey back. I was trying to watch to be sure they were right 52 me. It took only fifteen minutes to get there as rush hour traffic was beginning to 53 . I felt better than I had all day and my headache was nearly gone.
Later, as I arrived home, my husband 54 , “So you aren’t ever late any more.”
I said, “Sometimes it’s 55 to be late.”

Life became hard when I was 14. My mother and I moved to New York to 36 my father, who’d moved there to find 37 work when I was three years old. He had a job at a restaurant and only visited us 38 every couple of years.
Before I moved, I knew that people in the US spoke English. But honestly, I didn’t stop to analyze the 39 when I was 40 to leave. Just like I assumed I could easily become a doctor or a lawyer. I assumed that I had the skills to learn English in a few weeks.
When I 41 in the US and started 8th grade at Ditmas Middle School in Brooklyn, everyone was speaking a(n) 42 language I couldn’t understand. I 43 that life had subtitles, like in foreign movies. School was such a serious place here. Sometimes I felt like I was in a geek(呆子) class. The teachers were always 44 my moves so I couldn’t even throw a paper ball at a classmate’s head. And the worst thing was having to read 45
46 after almost seven months of complaining about everything, I realized that complaining didn’t change things. 47 just made my life worse. If I was going to 48 in this new concrete jungle, I had to 49 . I began to learn English by reading newspapers on my own 50 school. After about four months, I started enjoying reading the crime and sports stories. After six months of studying, my teachers 51 my improvement and moved me into a more 52 English class. I could go to the store and ask for things that I wanted to buy without 53 frustration. For the first time I felt like I was living on earth again 54 .I didn’t hear foreign talk. I 55 understand people.

Seventeen-year-old Rivertown teenager, John Janson, was honoured at the Lifesaver Awards last night for carrying out lifesaving first aid on his neighbour after a shocking knife 36 .
John was presented with his award at a ceremony which recognized the 37 of the ten people who have saved the life of others.
John had been studying in his room when he heard 38 . When he and his father rushed outside, they 39 that Anne Slade, mother of three, had been stabbed(刺) 40 with a knife by her ex-boyfriend(前男友). The man ran from the 41 and left Ms Slade lying in her front garden 42 very heavily. Her hands had almost been cut off.
It was John’s quick 43 and knowledge of first aid that saved Ms Slade’s life. He immediately asked a number of the 44 people for bandages(绷带), but when nobody could put their hands on anything, his father got some tea towels(毛巾)and 45 from their house. John used these to dress the most severe 46 to Ms Slade’s hands. He slowed the bleeding by applying pressure to the wounds until the 47 and ambulance arrived.
“I’m 48 of what I did but I was just doing what I had been 49 ,” John said.
John had taken part in the Young Lifesaver Scheme at his high school. When 50 John, Mr Alan Southerton, Director of the Young Lifesaver Scheme, said, “ 51 is no doubt that John’s quick thinking and the first aid52 that he had learned at school saved Ms Slade’s life. It shows that a simple knowledge of the first aid can make a real 53 .”
John and the nine other lifesavers also attended a 54 reception yesterday hosted by the Prime Minister before 55 their awards last night.

My earliest bee experience took place at a summer camp. One day our teacher told us to head up the hill nearby. We all began to 31 our destination. The girls took the concrete stairs, but the boys ran 32 up the grassy hill, at the top of which sat a long wooden fence(围栏). Without 33 the boys ahead of me vaulted(跃过) over the fence bravely.
What should I do? Take the stairs and 34 a girl, or jump over the fence and look 35 ? Then I took my chance with the fence. I placed both 36 on the top and jumped, feeling uneasy. I didn’t 37 it. As I tried, my foot 38 on the top of the fence. Down I went! I landed on my backside. I tried to39 off the accident, but then I felt something moving 40 me. Just then I saw 41 seemed like hundreds of bees flying toward me. I had landed on a beehive(蜂窝)! I 42 up and rushed as fast as I could. But the bees flew faster. What a/an 43 situation I was in!
My clothes were covered with 44 . I parked myself in the camp and I was at a loss. 45 this, my teacher quickly took off all my clothes but underwear. Bees flew out of my clothes and 46 out of my mouth!
I had gained the 47 of all the campers, but I didn’t feel cool. I had been 48almost 40 bees stings(蛰) all over my body. I learned a most 49 lesson that day. When we are led by the 50 to show off(炫耀), we might find ourselves sitting on a beehive.

We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the 1 to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her 2 , so I allowed her to go to the store in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. I 3 having it, but I said: “Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t 4 forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last.
We were talking 5 we heard a loud noise. 6 hearing it, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted; “Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck!”
My heart sank and my mind was flooded with conflicting (矛盾的) thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was 7? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: “Here is a chance to show Holly 8 you really love. She’ll never forget it.”
The 9 had happened in my own driveway. Holly had 10 my truck into our family van (搬运车). Because of her 11 , she had confused the brakes (刹车) and the gas pedal (油门). Holly was unhurt 12 but when I reached her, she was crying and saying “Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened (湿润) and she said: “That happened to me when I was a girl. I 13 my dad’s car completely. When I got home, my dad knocked me to the ground and began to 14 me.”
Over 40 years later, she still felt the 15 of the night, which was a deep wound on her soul.
