Mrs Amatuli was my teacher in the fourth grade. One day at lunch time, Mrs Amatuli asked me if she could  36  my sandwiches. She explained that I could use the money to buy a   37  lunch from the cafeteria(自助餐厅). I was   38. I never bought my lunch at the cafeteria. It was  39   expensive for my family, and I always carried my lunch and brought the bag back home to   40  again the next day.
You can understand my   41  when I had the opportunity to buy a hot lunch. Kids always  42  about the cafeteria food but I was very  43  of them.
When we  44  lunch that day, Mrs Amatuli took me aside and said she wanted to   45 why she had bought my sandwiches. I really didn’t care why,   46  it gave me a few minutes of her precious  47   so I was very quiet as she explained.
You  48  , she was a Catholic(天主教徒) and she told me that Catholics didn’t eat red meat on Fridays—they ate  49  on Fridays.
Oh, I couldn’t   50  to get home and tell my Mom that from then on I wanted fish on Fridays.  51  my Mom understood why, she gladly fixed fish for me on Fridays. From then on, every Friday I could get in  52  with the rest of the kids for a hot lunch. I didn’t care how many of the kids complained about the cafeteria food—it  53  great to me!
I realize now that Mrs Amatuli   54   have fixed herself a fish sandwich on Fridays. She bought my sandwiches because she saw a little girl who was pleased over the simple

One day, when I was in high school, I saw a kid named Kyle walking home from school with all his books, I thought to myself, “   11   would anyone bring home all his books for the weekend? He must really be   12  .” As I was walking, I saw several kids running toward him. They ran at him,   13    all his books out of his arms and he fell down in the dirt. His glasses went   14   and landed in the grass.
My heart went out to him. So, I ran over to him.  15   I handed him his glasses, he looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!”
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it   16   , he lived near me. We talked all the way home. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
Kyle was the   17  student of our class, one of those guys that really found  themselves during high school. Therefore he had the   18   to prepare a graduation speech. On the graduation day, I could see that he was   19  . So, I patted him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me and smiled.
He cleared his throat, and began. “Graduation is a time to   20   those who helped you make it through those   21   years. Your parents, your teachers… but mostly your friends, I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best  22   you can give him.”
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to   23   himself over the weekend and was carrying his books home. “Thankfully, nothing happened. My friend   24   me from doing the unspeakable.”
Not until that moment did I realize that you should never underestimate(低估) the  25   of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person’s life. For better or for worse.

When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was   1   to see that it was an English English dictionary, also known as a monolingual(单语的) dictionary.   2   it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one and, to be honest, I found it extremely  3   to use at first. I would look up words in the dictionary and still not fully understand the meaning. I was used to the   4   bilingual(双语的)dictionaries, in which the words are    5   both in English and Chinese. I really wondered why my aunt   6   to make things so difficult for me. Now, after studying English at university for three years, I   7  that monolingual dictionaries are  8 in learning a foreign language.

My aunt even goes so far as to  10  that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you the   11  meaning of a word in English! Therefore, she insisted that I read the definition(定义) of a word in a monolingual dictionary when I wanted to get a better understanding of its meaning. 12   , I have come to see what she meant.

When I read these definitions, I am  14  exposed to the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas.  15  this, I can express myself more easily in English.

Working together, the father and son developed concepts of  42  it could be accomplished and how the difficulties could be  43  . With great  44  and inspiration, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.
The project started well, but unfortunately an accident took the life of John. Washington was injured and left with a brain damage, 45  him not being able to walk or talk or even move.
Everyone had a  46  comment to make and felt the project should be trashed. In  47  of his disability,Washington still had a burning  48  to complete the bridge and his mind was still as  49  as ever.
He tried to pass on his  50  to some of his friends. Suddenly an idea  51  him as he lay in hospital. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best  52  of it. After six months of living in New Zealand, I realized one thing. Despite my  36   for greater contact with local students,  37   I initiated(开始) the contact, it wouldn’t happen. Local students are not interested in contacts with the international students, because they regard us as shy,  38    and sometimes snobby (势利的) people. Of course we know that’s not true. I want to change their opinions.
After  39     the problem, I put on my “confidence mask” each morning and walked around with a smile on my face. I chatted with people whenever I had the chance. I showed that I was not afraid to  40     them, and that I was worthy of being a friend.
A side-effect of my  41     confidence was that my emotions occasionally broke down Only in the  42     of my room, where no one could see, would I reveal my real emotions. All the rejections, funny looks, and  43     behind my back calling me a weirdo(古怪的人) melted  into tears. Once that was done, I would put on my confidence mask once again and start a new day.
It finally worked  My name became known throughout the school as I appeared to be 44     and active. Slowly, I discovered that I no longer needed to put on my confidence mask. I had real    friends. Instead of dragging myself to school and  45    to be happy, I was truly happy. I could not believe it when I was elected to the student government as Deputy Head boy----the first international student to receive the title.
From my  46    in New Zealand, I believe one thing will always be true: If you try your best to reach your goals, you’ll achieve your  47     dreams.
