The art of giving gifts is to give something that others cannot buy for themselves.
                                         ------A.A. Milne
I have spent most of my career as a traveling salesman. There’s 36    lonelier than having meals myself in a coffee shop. One year, my five-year-old daughter Jeanine gave me a  37  . It was a soft toy penguin with a hand –painted  38  saying “I love My Dad!”  Tears came into my eyes and immediately, I gave it a  39  place on my desk.
Soon I had to leave on another business  40  . This time when I was  41  , I put the penguin in my suitcase. After that day, Jeanine always helped me pack with the penguin. Many years 42  by and that little penguin has traveled with me hundreds of thousands of miles all across America and over to Europe. We have also made many friends  43   the way.

But half an hour later, he called back to say that my penguin had been found. It was late,  47   I drove several hours to get my little  48  , arriving near midnight.
When I rushed to the hotel, I found that it was waiting at the front desk. In the lobby(大厅), some   49  business travelers looked at us, I think, with some  50  and envy(羡慕). Someone came out to shake my hand. One man told me that he had even volunteered to  51  it to me the very next day.
Jeannie is in college now and I don’t travel  52  much anymore. The penguin spends most of its time  53   on my dresser--- a reminder that  54   is the best traveling companion. All those years on the road, it was the one thing I never left home  55  .

I was struggling to get the 45 out when this man in the pickup pulled in behind me. He got out to introduce himself and 46 to help me. When he got the spare out we discovered that the spare is also 47 . He told me he would take the tire and have it 48 and call my husband.
We got the tire fixed 49 he took me back to my car. My husband was there 50 us when we got back. The kind stranger stayed there and helped my husband 51 the tire. After they finished we 52 thanked him and offered to pay him for his 53 .
I will never forget his words, " your thanks is 54 enough pay and I just hope if this ever happens to my wife or daughter someone will be so 55 as to help them."

When we are unfamiliar with something, we may feel nervous and fearful. The help of others is a good   36    to help us pull through.
I write for a big newspaper, and I wanted to   37   a story about parachute jumping(跳伞). To make it a realistic as well as exciting   38   , I decided that I had to make a jump myself   39   . Unluckily, I’m not good at any   40   , let alone(更不用说)parachute jumping.

The next morning, I was taken to the airfield.   45   , a heavy parachute was put on my back. Then I was   46    to make my way to a small plane which had just stopped slowly on the runway. The line was to pull my parachute    49   after I jumped.
“Get   50   , Henry,” Harry said. I moved carefully to the door. I wanted to   51   , “NO, no, no!” But no word came.
“Jump!” Harry called   52   . “Jump!”
Away from the plane, and down, down I fell, arms stretched. It worked All at once I was very happy. Then I felt a quick   53   . My big parachute had opened! It was the best   54    I ever had. I looked down. There were rivers, trees, fields and houses. I heard the soft sound of the air. This was   55   .

Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to __16__.
I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph __17_ we realized we were __18_. Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new $20 bill. I was so __19_ because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on __20__ seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line. __21__ I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I __22_ I had not actually handed any money to the cashier. I had just __23__ out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.
My conscience (良心) opened its mouth and swallowed me in one big bite. I couldn’t __24__ over it. I just couldn’t go back to the cashier and __25__ for my stolen pizza. I was so upset that I __26__ to give myself the pleasure of an ice cream for __27__ that someone would say, “Hey, Jeff, why not you use the change __28__ the pizza instead of that nice, new $20 bill?” I was not so __29__ of my cash now. For the next two years, whenever I was __30__ of the “pizza incident”, I would say to myself, “Don’t think about it…”
I have learned two things from this __31__. Maybe I was a fool for __32__ in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a __33__ pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away with what you have done, your conscience will __34__ up with you.
This reflects the saying, “Coward (懦夫) dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “__35__” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only one, or maybe twice.

Teaching my first child, Danae, to share her toys was the biggest challenge. To    1    this, we started inviting other children to play, which could help Danae discover that it’s fun to share with others — a lesson I needed to   2      myself as well, as it   3     .

SECTION B

I remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age. Not only did he understand that specific  36  can affect our mental pictures, but he understood that words are a  37  programming factor in lifelong success.
One particularly unforgettable event occurred when I was eight. As a child, I was always climbing trees, poles and  38  around upside down from the rafters(屋椽) of our lake house.  39 , it came to no surprise for my dad to find me at the top of a 30-foot tree, swinging back and forth. My little eight-year-old  40  didn’t realize that the tree could break or I could get hurt. I just thought it was enjoyable to be up so high. My older cousin, Tammy, was also hanging in the same tree. Her mother also  41  us at exactly the same time as my dad did. About that time, a huge gust(一阵) of wind blew through the tree. I could hear the leaves rustle(嘎嘎地响) and feel the tree begin to sway. I remember my dad’s  42  over the wind, “Bart, Hold on tightly!”So I did.
The next thing I heard was Tammy’s mother yelling, “Tammy, don’t fall!” Tammy did  43  . My dad later explained to me that the mind has a very  44 time processing a negative image. It takes seventeen positive statements to offset(抵消) one negative statement. That means it might  45  seventeen compliments(贺词/道贺) to offset the emotional  46  of one criticism.
These are concepts that are especially useful in developing yourself. How many compliments do you give yourself daily and how often do you criticize yourself? Try to  47  yourself a lifetime of positive programming by complimenting yourself, or at least think about the kind of programming you are doing to yourself on a daily basis. Remember: try to make positive self-talk a daily practice and you will succeed some day.
