Before I turned 29, my parents moved to Queensland, where I arrived for a visit six months later.
I      upon my mother with hugs, and for the first time in my life I said, “I love you, mom!” Then I gently         , expecting some kind of reciprocation. But it never came. Instead, she appeared       in horror.
When I was back at work, I overheard a workmate on a call to her mother and she concluded it with “I love you, Mum.” As       as that. Why wasn’t it like that in mine? Something had to be done about this         situation once and for all.
My       came the next Sunday during my weekly phone call to my mother. After we had shared our usual pleasantries and      , I took a deep breath and asked, “Do you love me, Mum?” After a short      , she replied, “I love you. Don’t be silly. You know we never said things like that in my family.”
“Well, I want it to be said in ours. From now on I want to       our conversations with ‘I love you.’”
In May 2000 my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was       to hospital, and I phoned every day to       her. One evening when I rang, a nurse answered the phone and regretfully informed me that my mother’s condition had rapidly worsened. She wasn’t expected to       it through the night.
Knowing I couldn’t get a flight in time, I asked the nurse to put the phone next to my mother’s ear so I could talk to her. “She’s         conscious,” the nurse replied. “It’s unlikely she’ll hear you.” But I didn’t care. I wanted to do it      .
she’d placed the phone by my mother’s ear, I started       and telling Mum over and over again that I loved her. At first, all I could hear was “Hmmmm” — but then, like a miracle, with a deep       she said, “Love you … love you, darling.” It was the last thing she said before drifting into      .
Although I was overwhelmed by her death, the surprising part was how well I      . Of course, losing a parent is extremely painful and I shed many tears, but receiving those lovely last words made it much more       . I had closure in the best possible way.

I was in my third year of teaching creative writing at a high school in New York, when one of my students, 15-year-old Micky, gave me a note from his mother. It       his absence from class the day before.
I had seen Micky himself writing the note at his desk. Most parental-excuse notes I received were penned by my       . The forged(伪造的) excuse notes made a large pile, with writing that ranged from imaginative to crazy. The       of those notes didn’t realize that honest excuse notes were usually       : “Peter was late because the alarm clock didn’t go off.” The students always said that it was hard putting 200 words together on any subject, but when they       excuse notes, they were brilliant.
So one day I gave the excuse notes to my classes, saying, “They’re       to be written by parents, but actually they are not. True, Micky ? ” The students looked at me       .“Now, this will be the first class to study the       of the excuse notes --- the first class, ever, to practice writing them. You’re so       to have a teacher like me who has taken your best writing and turned it into a       worthy of study. ”
Everyone smiled as I went on, “You used your       . So try more now. Today I’d like you to write ‘An Excuse Note from Adam/Eve to God’.”        went down. Pens raced         paper. For the first time ever I saw students so       in their writing that they had to be asked to go to lunch by their friends.
The next day everyone had excuse notes.       discussions followed. The headmaster entered the classroom and walked       , looking at papers, and then said, “I’d like you to see me in my office.” My heart        .
When I stepped into his office, he came to       my hand and said, “I just want to tell you that that lesson, that task, whatever the hell you were doing, was       . Those kids were writing on the college       . Thank you. ”

Personally I think trains are exciting and romantic. I must         that trains are not important means of transportation in the US, but I do have some        with them.
When I was a child, growing up in a small town with very little       , we used to go to the station to watch the passenger trains coming in. There was something        about the steaming, roaring string of cars coming into view around the mountains, slowly growing larger and        and finally        crowds of strangers onto the platform.
I took my        train trip when I was ten years old. I went with my elder sister to visit our cousins six hundred miles away. The train--so loud and violent on the outside--was        and rocking inside. We were very excited, and as that was also our first time away from our parents, we felt somewhat frightened too. However, because I had        so much, I was a little disappointed when I was finally one of the passengers I had      for so long.
As a college student, I       ride overnight train to my roommate’s hometown. We could never afford a       , so we played cards, sang, ate, read and talked        we finally fell uncomfortably asleep in the straight-backed seats.
My idea that trains are        may come from the fact that my husband and I took the train on our honeymoon, spending extra money to eat in the dining car, and        the window as the desert scenery slid past.
Now, when I make a trip, I always fly or drive, and        are not a very important part of my life.       , every time I hear the train whistle faraway on a quiet night, I can always feel the        in my heart to pack my bags and jump on board, entering a      world of motions, sounds, sights, and experience which just aren’t        in the dull environment of an airplane.

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really         his toast burned. He         me in his arms and said, “Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she’s really       . And besides, a burned toast never          anyone!”
is full of imperfect things... and imperfect people. I’m not the best at anything, and I forget          and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what I’ve        over the years is that learning to accept each other’s          – and         to celebrate each other’s differences – is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and        relationship where a burned toast isn’t a deal-breaker!
