If I hear anyone making  46  noises or making fun of her in any way, I will let you fail right here and now. Understood?"
Mr. Hadley walked back to me and  47  me the paper, asking me to go to the front of the class. I walked to the front of the class on legs  48  were shaking and I felt a(n)  49  in my chest. Everyone were all quiet, including those boys. I stood there trying to gain  50  .

There are many different ways of seeing a town for the first time. One of them is to walk around it, guide-book  26  hand. Of course, we may  27  with our guide-books the history and  28  developments of a town and get to know them.
29  then, if we take our time and  30  in a town for a while, we may get to know it better. When we  31  it as a whole, we begin to have some  32 , which even the best guide-books do not
answer. Why is the town just  33  this —— this shape, this plan, this size? Why do its streets  34  in this particular way, and not in any  35  way?
Here even the best guide-book  36  us. One can’t find the information in it about how a town has developed to the  37  appearance. It may not describe the original  38  of a town. However, one may get some idea of what it  39  look like by walking around the town. One can also imagine  40  the town was first planned and built. Then one can learn more about in what direction the town  41  to develop.
What is the  42  of studying towns in this way?For me, it is  43  a matter that one gets a greater depth of pleasure by visiting and seeing a town with one’s own eyes. A  44  visit to a town may help one better understand why it is attractive  45  just reading about it in a guide-book.

There at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass, my l4-year-old son, John, and I noticed the coat. While the other coats drooped (低垂), this one looked as if it were   41   itself up. The coat was beautifully made, with a Fifth Avenue label and an  42   price of $28, which was popular just then with   43  , but could cost several hundred dollars new. John tried it on and the  44   was perfect.
John  45   the coat to school the next day and came home with a big smile. “Did the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They loved it,” he said,   46   folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a   47  came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness (作对) and   48   discussion replaced fierce argument. He became more mannerly and  49  , eager to please. He would generously lend his younger brother his tapes and lecture him   50   his behavior. When I mentioned this   51   to his teacher and wondered what caused the changes, she said laughing. “It   52   be his coat!” Another teacher told him she was giving him a good mark not only because he had earned   53   but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran   54   a friend. “Could this be John?” he asked surprisingly,   55   John’s new height, appreciating the cut of his coat and holding out his hand, one gentleman to another.
John and I both know we should never   56   a person’s clothes for the real person within them.   57  , there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for   58   what is on the inside with what is on the outside.
For John, it is a time when it is as easy to try on different  59   to life as it is to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape   60   all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.

Jean's father was a farm plane pilot in the little farming community in Northern California where she was raised, and _36_Jean was totallyattracted by airplanes and flying.
In her senior year of high school, her English teacher was Mrs. Dorothy Slaton. Mrs. Slaton was a _37_, demanding teacher with high standards and a low _38_ for excuses. She refused to treat her students like _39_, instead expecting them to behave like the _40_ adults they would have to be to succeed in the real world after graduation. Jean was _41_ of her at first but grew to respect her firmness and fairness gradually.
One day Mrs. Slaton gave the class a written _42_. "What do you think you’ll be doing 10 years from now?” Jean’s dream was to be a pilot like her father, but as the years went by, she had been beaten down by the _43_ and negative words she got whenever she talked about her career, so she unwillingly gave it up and wrote something else. Mrs. Slaton collected the papers and nothing more was said. Two weekslater, the teacher handed back the assignments, _44_ the students to face it down on the desk, and asked this question: "If you had enough finances and unlimited _45_, what would you do? Please write it on the _46_ of your previous assignment paper.”
When the students stopped writing, the teacher asked, "How many of you wrote the same thing on _47_ sides of the paper?" Not one hand went up.
The next thing that Mrs. Slaton said changed the course of Jean’s life. The teacher leaned forward _48_ her desk and said, "I have a little secret for you all. You do have _49_ abilities and talents. You do have access to the finest schools, and you can arrange plenty of finances if you want something _50_ enough. This is it! When you leave school, _51_ you don’t go for your dreams, no one will do it for you. You can have _52_ you want if you want it enough.”
What her teacher said touched Jean so much! In the following years, she tried her best to realize her dream of becoming a pilot. Although it didn’t happen _53_, she finally became one of the first three female pilot trainees ever _54_ by United Airlines. Today, Jean Harper is a Boeing 737 captain.
It was the power of one well-placed _55_ word that gave that uncertain young girl the strength and faith to pursue her dream.

I used to arrive at friends’ homes and before the door was closed, go straight for the phone with the 48“Is it OK if I just use the phone…?” At work, I became 49  when my fellow workers tried to 50  me from using the phone. I haven’t 53  a phone in the house for three weeks now, and it’s several days 54  I used a phone box. I try not to watch TV because there are 55 people on it making phone calls. My name is Jim Shelley and I am an addict.

The ringing of the phone runs through my head, telling me someone needs help. I pick it up and    1   the routine, “Teen Lifeline, this is Amber.” About 45 minutes later I hang up, feeling pleased because I’ve helped another teen. Volunteering at Teen Lifeline has helped me realize how to deal with my own    2   and help others.
“My mom is always fighting with me. I want to run away.” Some teens feel their    3   is a prison, rather than a place of shelter and safety. They feel parents are only there to make their lives    4  . We try to help the teens realize the danger they could be in    5   giving them advice. All we can do is to ask questions. We also try to find out where the teens would go and how they would survive. We give them a phone number if they     6   don’t want to live in their “prison”.
“I don’t want to    7   any more” is something we hear, and suicide (自杀) calls are some of the hardest to    8  . We try to discover why they want to take their lives and how serious they are by asking them to rate it on a scale of one to ten. One means they are    9   suicide but haven’t decided how, and ten means they are always thinking about it and have a    10   . We ask them to make a promise that they will not hurt themselves. And sometimes we ask for their telephone numbers    11  we can call back to make sure that they are okay.
Although many calls are about relatively    12   problems, volunteering at Teen Lifeline has helped me realize I’m not the    13   person with problems, and has taught me how to    14   with my heart. I have made a    15   and saved many lives — possibly even my own, too.

When I was a law professor, a student reported that I made an error in grading his exam by giving him too many points. He was   36  , and after thanking him for his honesty, I changed the grade in my   37  . His beaming (欢笑的) face turned to shock. “You’re   38   my grade?” he said angrily. “I would never have come in   39   ……”
He didn’t finish the   40  , but it was obvious that his display of honesty was   41  . He thought he’d have it all—praise and the higher grade.
Several colleagues thought I should have let the higher grade   42   because all I’d accomplished was to discourage him from being   43  in the future. And every time I tell this story some people agree with this   44  .
But I can’t see how I could give good reason for worsening my   45  in grading by undermining (损害) the honesty of all my grades by failing to   46   an error. The grade itself would be a dishonest   47   of his knowledge and it would have been   48  to other students. How could I   49   give a student a gift of an unearned grade?
I know  50   reporting an error in one’s favor is unusual, but, like   51   too much change, it’s clearly the right thing to do. People of character, those with real honesty, hate to give up  52_ as much as anyone else. The difference is that for them a good conscience and reputation is  _53  enough to give reason for the cost of doing the right thing.
Perhaps lowering the student’s grade did   54   him from being honest in the future, but bribing (贿赂) him to be honest so that he does the right thing when it’s cost-free would have _55 him even more. The duty to be honest is about right and wrong, not risks and rewards.

In Britain, people have different attitudes to the police. Most people generally    1   them and the job they do-although there are certain people who do not believe that the police should have the power that they do.
What does a policeman actually do? It is not a(n)   2 job to describe. After

Indeed, in Britain, he might be in the Traffic Police and spend all, or a lot of, his time   3up and down main roads and motorways. We expect the police to solve crimes, of course; so an ordinary policeman,
9  he is not a detective(侦探), will often have to help   10 and arrest criminals.
And who do we call when there is an emergency-an air crash, a   11 , a
road accident, or a robbery? We call the police. So a policeman has to be   12  to face any unpleasant emergency that may happen in the   13 world.
The police do an absolutely necessary job. They do it   14  well and I
support them, but I do not envy policemen. I do not think that I could  15  do
the job of a policeman.
