No fight can end,and no friendshiip can move on,until everyone says these little words:I’m sorry. Sometimes, though, they can be difficult to say.  71
It is not about winning.
Friendships aren’t like the Super Bowl, and there should never be a winner and a loser. When you start fighting with a friend,it may feel important that you “win” the fight by proving you’re right and he is wrong,or by making him be the first to apologize.
In reality, you’ll both lose if you let your fight ruin your friendship, and you’ll both win if you find a way to heal it.
  72
You may have heard the expression “His pride stood in the way”. It is usually used to describe a person who is so determined to be “right” that he lets an opportunity for happiness pass him by forever.  73    Remember: as time goes on,we usually forget who was right and who was wrong in a disagreement, and only remember the sadness of losing a friend.
Take the first step.
Are you sick of fighting?Do you think this fight is just not important enough to ruin your friendship?   74    You don’t have to take full responsibility for starting the fight, or even say that your feelings were wrong..But you should find something you did or said that’s worth apologizing for.Maybe you’re sorry that you let the fight go for so long,or that you overreacted to something your friend did. If you say you’re sorry,it’s like an invitation for your friend to do the same.   75

A.Then try to be the first to apologize.
B.Stop thinking about your pride.
C.It’s about taking some responsibility for the argument.
D.Don’t let this happen to a friendship you care about

E. Here are some things to keep in mind.
F. There are some special cases when you shouldn’t be the one to apologize first.
G. .Once you’ve both said it,you’ll both feel a million times better.

Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A.Goods for auction (拍卖) sales
B.Definition of bidding
C.Way to sell more goods by auction
D.Auction sales in history

  E. Brief introduction to auctions
  F. Making a larger profit as an auctioneer
61. ______
Auctions are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer. He asks the crowd assembled in the auction-room to make offers, or “bids”, for the various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid higher figures, and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is called “knocking down” the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer strikes a small hammer on a table at which he stands.
62. ______
The ancient Roman probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin auction, meaning “increasing”. The Romans usually sold in this way the goods taken in war. In England in the eighteenth centuries, goods were often sold “by the candle”: a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it stayed alight.
63. ______
Practically all goods whose qualities vary are sold by auction. Among these are coffee, skins, wool, tea, furs, silk and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property, furniture, pictures, rare books, old china and similar works of art.
64. ______
An auction is usually advertised beforehand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by potential buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of goods to be sold together, called a “lot”, is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with Lot 1 and continue in the order of numbers: he may wait until he notices the fact that certain buyers are in the room and then produce the lots they are likely to be interested in.
65. ______
The auctioneer’s services are paid for in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for. The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the bidding as high as possible. He will not waste time by starting the bidding too low. He will also play on the opponents among his buyers and succeed in getting a high price by encouraging two business competitors to bid against each other.

For Americans, a mosquito bite is an itchy(使人发痒的) bother, but for many in Africa, a tiny bite can be deadly. One million people die each year of malaria, a disease spread by infected mosquitoes. Most of these people live in Africa, and are under age 5.
Malaria can be prevented and treated. However, many African nations don’t have the funds to fight it. Nothing but Nets (NBN) hopes to change that. The United Nations Foundation created the campaign in 2006. The mission: Squash(压制) malaria by covering sleeping areas with nets. Hanging bed nets treated with insecticide(杀虫剂) is the simplest way to stop mosquitoes from biting at night. The chemical lasts four to five years. For $10, anyone can send a net to Africa and help save a life.
So far, NBN has raised $19 million and delivered 700,000 nets to seven countries. Families are taught how to use the nets. Kids also get vaccines(疫苗) and vitamins. “Women line up for miles to get these interventions(干预措施) for their kids,” says NBN director Elizabeth McKee Gore. “They understand the importance.” So do kids in this country. “They get so excited thinking of ways to raise money,” says NBN spokesperson and basketball star Ruth Riley.
NBN’s biggest fund-raiser is Katherine Commale, 7. She’s been spreading thebuzz(嗡嗡声) about bed nets for the past two years. To show how they work, she and her brother made a picture. “We teach that bed nets can save lives,” she told TFK.
Katherine has raised $42,000 for NBN. “She just wants those who need a net to have one,” says her mom, Lynda. “It’s pretty simple to her.” To find out how you can help, visit nothingbutnets.net.

Each year there is an increasing number of cars as millions of new cars are produced in America. Americans will not live without cars! However, some have realized the serious problem of air pollution by cars. It is necessary to find ways to solve the problem of air pollution.
One way to clean the air is to build a new kind of clean car. That’s what several of the large car factories are trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Engineers are now working on it. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model for us.
To prevent the world being polluted by cars, Americans have to make some changes in the way of their life. They have to cut down on the number of their cars and are encouraged to travel and go to work by bike. But this change does not come easily ---- many workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. And the problem of their pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.
Americans may live a happy but sad life for a long time because of the car problem..

To build a safer car, Japanese automakers are trying to replace the most accident-prone (易出事故的) part: the driver.
Inspired by statistics blaming human error for most accidents, Toyota and its competitors are designing “intelligent” cars that can almost drive themselves on the high way.
The systems are designed to reduce human tiredness and the mistakes that often result. This kind of support is what drivers need most in a country with some of the most crowded reads in the world. That is why it should not be surprising that Japan is leading the race to make cars smarter.
To provide a safer ride, Japanese automakers are turning to technologies like laser radar and machine vision to replace tired eyes and wandering minds.
An infrared radar unit fixed on the bumper is part of a now cruise (巡航) control method that Toyota introduced in August 1997. It’s now an optional feature on its Celsior luxury sedan that costs 70,000 yen (US$648).
The “adaptive” system tracks the car ahead, and slows down or speed up the car automatically to keep a safer distance in highway traffic. The same technology has also been used by some cars made by Toyota’s competitors.
Subaru, a type of its Legacy wagon, made its first appearance last September with Active Driving Assist, which besides adjusting cruising speed, sounds an alarm if the car goes out of its lane or makes a turn too fast. In the latter case, it down shifts gear even before the driver starts to brake.
An even smarter system is coming from Honda. Called Honda Intelligent Driver Support (HIDS), it “sees” the road through a tiny camera on the windshield and helps steer the car down the middle of lane. A computer picks out lines on the highway surface and touched the car’s steering wheel in the right direction. Honda got approval in March to start testing HIDS on the highway and says it will arrive in showrooms in the near future.

For many of us, printed books are satisfying in ways beyond the words they contain. Billions of printed books have been published, read and saved in the 600 years since movable type was invented, so why mess with a good things?
Sony Electronics is doing just that, betting that readers will be won over by the convenience of readability of its new electronic book devices. Sony's reader, the PRS-505, can hold 160 books in its fixed memory, enough to line the shelves on a good-sized wall in the average American home. The $299 device is about the size of a paperback book, but a half-inch thick and weighs less than a pound.
The Sony book reader is revolutionary not only in its storage capacity. The font(字体) is highly readable and adjustable by size. Unlike laptop computers, you can put the Sony in your purse, read it in direct sunlight and even bookmark the pages. And you can connect it to your PC to download books.
Surprisingly, though the reader has liberated the book from paper, electronic books aren't always a bargain. For example, David Baldacci's "Stone Cold" download retails(零售) for $15.19 at the Sony site, while Amazon(卓越网) will deliver a hard copy to your mailbox for $16.19.
The Sony reader also lets you store and play or display music. So what's not to like about the Sony? Well, for many bibliophiles, a lot. Book lovers like to have, hold and keep their volumes, which don't need charging. You can write notes in the margins, and enjoy the ambience they provide on your book shelves.
The need for electronic reading devices is likely to grow as more people worried about the billions of tons of paper used for printed material. Many believe the time will come when devices like the Sony reader are as common as printed newspapers and magazines today.
1.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The age of the electronic book reader is coming
B. Printed books are out of date
C. The Sony reader meets many readers’ needs
D. The revolution in book readers
2.According to the passage, the Sony book reader _________.
A. is as light as a laptop computer               B. can hold more than 200 books
C. is convenient to carry around                  D. cannot be connected to a PC
3.What is the author’s point when he mentions “Stone Cold”?
A. Amazon’s printed books are very cheap
B. “Stone Cold” can be got from the Sony site and Amazon
C. The Sony book reader is not very cheap to use
D. The Sony book reader can benefit its buyers a lot
4.The underlined word “bibliophiles” in Paragraph 5 refers to “__________”.
A. music lovers                                            B. book lovers
C. electronic reading devices                      D. Sony readers
5.According to the author, what’s the future for the electronic reading devices?
A. They’ll replace printed newspapers and magazines
B. They’ll still be more expensive than printed newspapers
C. They’ll become a must in people’s daily life
D. They’ll become more popular as time goes on

Work is a very important part of life in the United States. When the early Protestant immigrants(新教徒移民) came to this country, they brought the idea that work was the way to God and heaven. This attitude, the Protestant Work Ethic(道德规范), still influences America today. Work is not only important for economic benefits, the salary, but also for social and psychological need, the feeling of doing something for the good of the society. Americans spend most of their lives working, being productive. For most Americans, their work defines them: they are what they do. What happens then, when a person can no longer work? Almost all Americans stop working at age sixty-five or seventy and retire. Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, _______________; but leaving one’s job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Many retirees do not know how to use their time or they feel lost without their jobs.
Retirements can also bring financial problems. Many people rely on Social Security checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income. These checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty-five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation(通货膨胀) is forcing prices higher each year. Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expenses. The government offers some assistance, Medicare and welfare, but many senior citizens have to change their life styles after retirement. They have top spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel and other necessities.
American society is only beginning to be concerned about the special physical and emotional needs of its senior citizens. The government is taking steps to ease the problem of limited income. They are building new housing, offering discounts in stores and museums and on buses, and providing other services such as free courses, food service, and help with housework.
76.What’s the general idea of this passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)

77.Translate the underlined sentence in the first paragraph into Chinese.

78.Please fill in the blank with proper words or phrases. (Please answer within 10 words.)
