It just hadn't been a very good week. On Tuesday, Sam's father lost his job. Then on Wednesday, Sam's mother announced that the rent(房租)on their apartment was going up. Now it was Friday, and Sam received an invitation from Rosa to her birthday party.
Sam knew Rosa from Adventure(冒险)Club. He knew he would enjoy Rosa's party, but he didn't want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little bit of money he had? Sam knew he couldn't ask Mom or Dad for any money-not this week!
Later that afternoon, Sam noticed a second-hand book sale going on. He went there and had a quick look. Two books caught his eye. The first was a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods, and the second was a book about women explorers (探险家). "Rosa would like these," Sam thought, "but would it be tacky(蹩脚的)to give her second-hand books for her birthday?"
Sam decided that a second-hand gift was better than no gift at all. Besides, Rosa supported recycling in a big way. So, she would probably like it. With his last dollar, Sam bought the books and went home. He felt a little better.
The party was on Saturday. Rosa opened all her gifts and thanked everyone for the nice things they had given her. She paused (停顿)when she opened Sam's gift, which made him wonder if she liked the books, but nothing was said.
When Sam got home, he opened his e-mail and found this note from Rosa.
Dear Sam,
Of all the gifts I received today, yours was the nicest. How did you know I would love a book about women explorers and a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods? Now I have something to read that will inspire me to follow my dream of becoming an adventurer, and I have a book that I can share with my grandmother. She is getting older and wants to be sure her granddaughter knows how to make the - wonderful foods of Puerto Rico. Thank you so much.
Love,
Rosa.
The week turned out to be a good one after all.

Hi Vince,It's been a while since we got in touch last time. How has your semester(学期)been?I want to send you an email to let you know how things have been going during my semester abroad here in Malaga, Spain(西班牙). I've already been here for several weeks, and I feel like I am finally adapting (适应)to the culture. I'm also speaking the language better.I arrived here on September 1st. The weather has been very nice. Even though it's October, it's still rather sunny and warm. In fact, I went to the beach and swam in the Mediterranean Sea(地中海)earlier today.I am living with a very welcoming host family. I have my own private bedroom. We eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner together. On Sundays, we have a big home- cooked paella for lunch. In Spain, lunch is usually the biggest meal of the day. It's also very common for the people to take a midday nap right after a big meal. I am actually just waking up from my nap right now!On weekdays, I take classes at the local university. There, I met several native(本国的)Spanish speakers. They have been very kind and patient with me. At first, it I was difficult for me to understand their Spanish, but now I understand most of our conversations. They say that my Spanish has improved a lot since we first met. Now, I am more confident (自信的)to use the language in other places like stores and restaurants.I am so glad that I decided to spend the semester here in Spain. Tomorrow, October 12th, is Spain's National Day. We will have a five-day holiday. A group of my friends and I are going to travel to France for four days. V died in July of 1890.His brother was a wise dealer and saved lots of paintings by Van Gogh. His greatest wish was to make the works more widely known and make much money.Sadly he himself died just six months later. He left a large collection of art to his wife, who "sold some of Van Gogh's works, lent as many as she could to exhibitions, and published(出版)many of Van Gogh's letters to his brother.Without her,Van Gogh would never have become as famous as he is today." We see humans all around us.But when was the first human seen?Early humans did not leave behind any written records. However, they left behind many paintings on the walls of the caves(洞穴)where they lived. These paintings tell about their life, and we know these early humans walked on four limbs(四肢)like apes(猿).Also, they did not live at one place but moved from place to place in search of food and water.
Without any tools, early humans used stones, bones of animals, and sharp pieces of wood to dig, hunt and cut their food. They also used these to protect themselves from animals.Since stones were used to make tools, this age was called Stone Age.
With time going, tools made of bones and stones were replaced with metal(金属的)ones which were stronger, sharper, and long﹣lasting.Metals were also used for farming and making knives.Copper(铜)was the first metal to be used.
The first fire that early humans noticed was natural fire caused by lightning(闪电).With fire, early humans could light up dark caves. They could keep themselves warm during cold weather and cook meat. Also the fire could drive animals away.
Early humans noticed new trees growing from the seeds(种子)that fell to the ground from the fruits. This gave them the idea that they could make their own food by planting seeds, which led to farming. With the beginning of farming, early humans began to settle down(定居).They moved out of the caves and lived on farms and near their fields together, then the first villages came up.
Raising animals was a big event in human history that changed the life of early humans. The wild dogs were probably the first animal to be raised. As time went, goats, sheep, cows, donkeys, and horses were kept, too. This led to herding(畜牧业).Milk, meat and wool came from these animals.

Isn't fast food delicious?Aren't fast food restaurants cool? ...The answer to these questions is yes.
However, there are growing facts that fast food is one of the worst parts of modern life. And studies have shown that burgers and fried chicken, which we enjoy so much, can cause a lot of health problems.
In spite of (尽管) this, why are fast food restaurants so attractive(吸引人的)?The first and most important reason is that their service is fast.Their staff(员工)are friendly and very smart﹣looking in their clean and bright uniforms(制服).Moreover, most fast food restaurants are near places that people always pass by.It is so easy to graba burger and eat on the way to work.

"I have no special talent.I'm only passionately curious. " This famous quote from Albert Einstein might tell the reason for his success. When Newton discovered gravity, and when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, their curiosity was greatly satisfied. If they hadn't been curious, what a loss for humans!
There is a common truth that intellectual curiosity (求知欲)contributes to school performance more than intelligence. Some studies also show there are benefits of curiosity in improving the long ﹣ term level of learning and memory, and a lot of positive results are connected with curiosity.
It has been known that both animals and humans are willing to take a risk to satisfy their curiosity despite knowing that the result will remain unchanged.Despite there being different views on the reason for curiosity, most experts reach an agreement that like the way the stomach looks for food, our brain looks for knowledge.People and animals are eager to know things because getting that information means a reward.
An interesting thing is that our brain will release a pleasure﹣related chemical when it has been given new information ,making seeking information much like eating — another pleasant activity.Researchers newly found that increasing the release of the chemical greatly increased the curiosity in animals. However, how exactly the chemical plays a role still remains a mystery.
Considering the present level of research on curiosity and the driving force of curiosity, including scientific curiosity, more research should be carried on in this field. It's safe to say that curiosity itself will help uncover curiosity. And remember even though the idiom says "Curiosity kills the cat",it ends with satisfaction bringing it back.

B.It is natural and common among humans and animals.

(4)What does the author mean in the last paragraph?
A.Curiosity takes many different forms.

(5)Which of the following is TRUE about the passage?

Kids are putting on weight because of changes in their diet and lifestyle, according to experts.Too much schoolwork and greater use of electronic devices( 电子产品) could also be a cause.
According to the plan, teachers should not allow their classes to run too late or too early. They should make sure that students have breaks and enough physical(躯体上的) activity.School students should have at least three hours of active physical activity each week.
Parents should reduce their children's use of electronic devices and stop their children from eating foods that are high in sugar, fat and salt.
