Instroduction to Letters to Sam
Dear Reader，
Please allow me to tell you something before you read this book. When my 36 ,Sam, was born, my heart was filled with joy. I had been sitting in a wheelchair for 20 years before then,and I have been 37 ill many times.So I wonderfuled if would have the 38 to tell Sam what I had 39 .
For years I have been hosting a program on the 40 and writing articles for a magazine.Being 41 to move freely,I have learned to sit still and keep my heart 42 , exchanging thoughts with thousands of listeners and 43 . So when Sam was born ,I 44 to tell him about school and friendship,Romance and work,Love and everything else. That’s how I started to write these 45 . I hoped that Sam would 46 them sooner or later.
However,that expedition 47 when Sam showed signs of autism(自闭症)at the age of two.He had actually stopped talking before the discovery of the signs.He 48 to communicate with others,even the family members.That was 49 for me but didn’t stop me writing on.I realized that I had even 50 now to tell him.I wanted him to 51 what it means to be “different ”from others,and learn how to fight against the misfortune he’ll 52 as I myself,his grandfather,did. Unexpected things may happen every day but no one can tell when and where. People usually get surprised or frightened by such things.
One day I 36 a taxi to go to a meeting. As it came near the corner, the taxi stopped suddenly.The 37 got out looking very puzzled(迷惑). A big 38 which had been following the taxi stopped, too. The taxi driver was now 39 at the corner looking up 40 the sky and the truck driver got out and 41 him. A number of cars behind them were 42 to stop as well and a large crowd of people had 43 at the corner.
The cause of all this 44 was a very strange noise. It 45 as if thousands and thousands of 46 were chirping（鸣叫）.The sound of so 47 birds toghter was quite surprising and many people looked 48 . The most extraordinary thing was that,except one or two 49 , there was not a bird in 50 . No one was able to know why — 51 two policemen arrived on the scene. They walked all around the area for a while and then went over near the railroad tracks beside a big board advertisement(广告)for a 52 . Since the noise seemed to be coming from around there, they climbed up and found that two loudspeakers had been 53 behind the advertisement.The bird noises were being broadcast to 54 attention to the film advertisement.
The cinema that made this advertisement was 55 to take the loudspeakers away, because they caused trouble and people were tired of them.

A mother and daughter living in my community are two of the most unfriendly people I have ever come across in my life. They are totally separated, mixing with 36 . As they drive past 37 they keep their eyes looking away and make no sign of acceptance. The only fame they have is making a nuisance of themselves to the local police station by 38 music played too loud, dogs barking more than once a day and any other pretty 39 gripe (把柄).
On moving into this neighborhood, I was 40 of these two but decided I would make up my own mind. This proved quite a 41 to me as more than once either the mother or the daughter would knock on my door and blast (猛烈抨击) me with some 42 or other.
I 43 answered politely and made sure I 44 as they went past my place and also made the effort now and then to make a kind remark about their garden or pets.
Time passed and in October, as part of the kindness rock give (送爱心石活动), Maureen and I 45 to place a kindness rock in their garden. Their 46 remained unchanged, however, and I continued to be as friendly as possible. During the Easter give, we decided once again to 47 these two unhappy ladies to our list and left a packet of cookies on their 48 . Imagine my 49 when two days later they 50 at my gate and jokingly said they are considering hanging their Christmas stockings on their gate, and they 51 me a bunch of flowers!
So, my fellow gifters , do not 52 on your random（随意的） gifts of kindness. You may never know just what this 53 to others, nor how many broken or 54 hearted people you may just change with a simple act of 55 .

At the age of 13，I visited a doctor with my parents. As I sat in the examining chair，the doctor looked into my 31 .“She did inherit (继承) it，”he said with coldness.“You need to be prepared. There is no 32 for this disease.”

Once upon a time there lived an old man in a nice cottage with a large garden. The old man was seen 16 his flowers all the time. They were so well-tended that every passer-by could not but 17 for a glance.
One day a young man went by the garden. He gazed at the splendid garden, 18 in admiration at the beauty of these sceneries. I believe every flower has 34 with which they can see the kindness of the man’s heart. The blind man grows flowers in his heart. Though 35 to see the beauty of blossoming（开花）, he surely can hear the voice of it, I suppose.
