Once a circle lost a piece of its own. The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around looking for its missing piece. But because it was incomplete(不完整的),it could only roll(滚) very slowly. It enjoyed the flowers and the sunshine along the way. It talked with insects(昆虫). It found lots of different pieces, but none of them fitted(适合). So it left them all by the side of the road and kept on looking for the missing piece. Then one day the circle found a piece that fitted perfectly, it put the missing piece into itself. It could be whole, with nothing missing. It was so happy and began to roll. Now that it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to see flowers or talk to insects. It realized how different the world was when it rolled so quickly. It felt so sad that it stopped, left the piece it found by the side of the road and rolled away slowly.
Sometimes, we are perfect when we lose something. A man who has everything is a poor man in some ways. He will never have hopes, dreams or something better.
We couldn’t be perfect, but we must be brave enough to love, kind enough to share happiness with others and clever enough to know there is enough love around us.

D.would go anywhere

Why did the circle stop when it rolled quickly?

In today’s world many people seem to be hungry for money. Some of them even lose their lives for it. Money does have its most useful effect(影响) on the poor, but once a person has a rich life, a lot more money doesn’t mean more happiness.
If money was everything, all millionaires(百万富翁)would have true love, true friendship, good health and a long life. However, this is not always true.

Thirty years ago, Lake Ponkapog in Hartwell, New Jersey, was full of life. Many birds and animals lived beside the water, which was full of fish. Now there are few birds, animals, and fish.
The lake water is polluted (污染的). It is in a color of dirty brown, and it is filled with strange plants.
How does this happen? First we must think about how water gets into Lake Ponkapog. When it rains, water comes into the lake from all around. In the past there were forests all around Lake Ponkapog so the rain water was clean.
Now there are many homes around the lake. People often use chemicals (化学品) in their gardens. They use other chemicals inside their houses for cleaning or killing insects (昆虫). There are also many businesses. Businesses use chemicals in their machines or shops. Other chemicals fall onto the ground from cars or trucks. When it rains, the rain water picks up all the chemicals from homes and businesses and then carries them into the lake. They pollute the water and kill the animals.
Boats on the lake are also a problem. Lake Ponkapog is a popular place for motorboats. But oil and gas (油和汽)  from boats often get into the lake. So more bad chemicals go into the water this way.
People in Hartwell are worried. They love their lake and want to save it. Will it be possible? A clean lake must have clean rainwater going into it. Clean rainwater is possible only if people are more careful about chemicals at home and at work. They must also be more careful about gas and oil and other chemicals on the ground. And they mustn't use motorboats any more on the lake. All these may change people's lives. Only then can Lake Ponkapog be a beautiful, clean lake again.
In the past, the water in Lake Ponkapog was made clean by ______.

A.forests B.rain C.birds D.fish

Chemicals from homes and businesses ______.

A.are always clean
B.can help the animals
C.are good for the lake
D.get into the rainwater

Cleaner rainwater will mean ______.

A.more boats on the lake
B.more dirty things in the lake
C.a cleaner lake
D.a dirtier lake

To save Lake Ponkapog, people need to ______.

A.be more careful about chemicals
B.use less water
C.grow fewer plants in the gardens
D.use more motorboats on the lake

The passage is about ______.

A.boats on Lake Ponkapog
B.why the water is dirty in Lake Ponkapog
C.clean rainwater
D.dirty lakes

If you lose 12 times in a row (连续地), will you just give up? Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and self-development, kept trying. And he became famous by showing people how to be successful.
Carnegie was born into a poor family in the United States. The boy didn’t see a train until he was 12 years old. In his teens, he had to get up at 3 am every day to milk the cows for his family.

Nowadays, many children spend hours a day looking at computer screens or other digital (数码的) products. Some eye care doctors say all the screen time has caused more children to have what they call computer vision syndrome (视力综合症).
Nathan Warford is an optometrist in the US. He says he has seen more children having eye problems. “More children come into my office because their parents have noticed that they have headaches (头疼)or red eyes, or because their degree of short-sightedness appears to be increasing (增加)very fast and they’re worried,” he said.
Dr. Warford says part of the problem is that even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, some children don’t tell their parents, because they don’t want their games or the computer to be taken away. Another part of the problem is that people blink (眨眼睛) less often when they look at the screen.A person who uses a computer or a digital product blinks about a third as much as we normally(正常地) do in everyday life. Don’t complain in the NBA
The NBA has a new rule(规则) this season. It’s called “zero tolerance(容忍)”. NBA referees(裁判) are not letting players complain too long or too loudly about a referee’s call(裁决). A player who does can be given a foul (犯规). Two fouls, and the player is out of the game.
The players don’t like the new rule and want the NBA to change it. During an exciting, close game, each side may win. They think it’s only natural to get angry if a call goes against you.
But I like the “zero tolerance” rule and wish other sports would follow the NBA’s example. Won’t it be more enjoyable if football, soccer and tennis players stop arguing the calls and just played the game?
Why do I like the new rule? The biggest reason is that it sets a good example to younger players. When kids see stars shouting at the referees and arguing every call, they think it’s part of the game. But shouting at referees and arguing calls should never be part of any kid’s games. Kids should be taught to forget about the referees’ calls and try to improve their skills and play their best.
All players need to learn that you control only one thing in a game, and that’s your own performance. You can’t control what the other players or trainers(教练员) do. And you certainly can’t control the calls the referees make.
Finally, no one from NBA to 8-year-old children should forget that being a basketball referee is a hard job. The referee has to make lots of sudden calls. They cannot be slow or wait. Chances will never come back. Not even the best referee gets every call right.
Maybe if the players, trainers and fans who shout at the referees have to wear a whistle(哨子) and call a few games, they won’t complain loudly about the “zero tolerance” rule.

The new rule
The players are not _________to complain twice about a referee’s call, _________ they may be_________ of the court.
The players’ opinion
They _________the new rule and wish it to be changed.
They think it’s natural for them to get angry during a close game if there is a call _________ them.
The writer’s opinion
He likes the “zero-tolerance” rule and wishes it to be followed by other sports and it will be more enjoyable if players. _________arguing the calls.
The new rule _________a good example to younger players.
Shouting at referees and arguing calls shouldn’t be part of any kid’s games and kids should pay attention to _________ their skills and play their best.

Although she’s quite young, Drew Barrymore can be a Hollywood legend (传奇). She was born on February 22, 1975, in California. Being from a family that produced great actors, she quickly found her way into the spotlight (聚光灯).
When she was 11 months old, she made her first advertisement on TV. She made her first movie at the age of 2. Five years later, she acted Gertie in Steven Spielberg’s famous film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).
However, it wasn’t all roses and sunshine when Barrymore was growing up. She was drinking wine by the time she was 9, smoking marijuana (大麻) at 10.
Most kid stars in Hollywood fail to become stars as adults. And most of the time, once they’re out of the spotlight, they stay out. But Drew Barrymore doesn’t.
As she was growing older, Barrymore got to learn that life is more meaningful than dangerous actions in the films. She started to build a career in 1997. She has made many successful films since then, including Charlie’s Angels (2000) and 50 First Dates (2004).
“In my life, there is darkness and drama, and I ‘m trying my best. I just want to challenge myself and prove that I can do more.”
In fact, if you don’t know her disordered childhood, you might find it hard to believe she’s such a sweet person now. Like many of the characters she plays in her comedy, Drew is easy-going and laughs a lot. In 2007, she was on the cover of People magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People issue.
“Life is very interesting … in the end, some of your greatest pains, become your greatest strengths,” Drew said.

“Long time no see.”
“Good good study, day day up.”
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.”
Yes, we call these examples Chinglish, like “people mountain, people sea”.
Chinglish usually means English vocabulary with Chinese grammar on street signs or products. However, many English speaking tourists love them. Tom has been living in Beijing for years. “I think many Chinese people dislike Chinglish. But I love it. It’s quite interesting. I think if the translations of English in China are all perfect, something will be lost from Chinese culture.” However, Chinglish will probably become a part of history in future. Beijing has made a plan to correct Chinglish within five years. “It is so funny to see Chinglish on the signs. And they are a kind of trouble for communication between the Chinese and foreigners,” a Beijinger said.
However, some people in China like Chinglish. They think that English has “borrowed” a lot from other languages such as German, French and Spanish in the past, and now as Chinese’s turn.

“Tom? Are you in bed yet?” called Mrs. White. There was no answer. Mrs. White put down her book and went to her 14-year-old son’s room. Tom was sitting in front of a bright computer screen on which a motorbike was running fast.
“Oh, Tom. You’re still playing on that computer. You must stop now, it’s half past eleven. If you don’t go to bed soon, you’ll be very tired tomorrow.” Said Mrs. White.
“But I’ve nearly won the game.” Said Tom to Mrs. White. She could see the excitement (激动) on his face. She sat down beside him.
“You’re always playing on the computer. You spend more time on this machine than on your homework.”
Today more and more families have computers. Parents hope computers can help their children improve their study at school. But, many of their children use computers to play games, to watch videos, instead of studying. We often see that computer game houses are crowded with people, especially young boys. They spend a lot of money competing with the computerized machines. The more they lose, the more they want to win. The result is that they don’t want to work or study.
In some other countries, even scientists hate computers. They say computers cause millions of people to lose their jobs or cause them a lot of trouble. Computer game addiction (瘾) is a serious problem in social life. Something has to be done to solve the problem.

“When she drinks your medicine, she must grow to the right size and have hair and teeth,” the king said, “If you don’t do this, you’ll have a beating.”
The doctors thought it impossible, but they dared not say anything against the king’s order. Just then and old doctor stepped forward. “Oh, we shall certainly obey your order,” he said, “but it takes time. We have to dig a mineral from the KunLun Mountains when the snow melts for the second time. The snow melts on those mountains only once in six years. So we need twelve years.”
At last the king agreed and the doctors took away the little princess. On her twelfth birthday, they brought her back to her parents with long black hair and beautiful teeth. The king and queen were very happy and gave the doctors expensive presents.
