Even people who don’t have much talent for acting or singing still dream of being discovered by a talent scout (星探). It seems just like the lottery (彩票), but better you get both fame and money.
For me, the dream seemed likely to stay a dream. But everything last week in Beijing.
I was eating dinner with some friends. As I was getting ready to pay, a young Chinese woman came running up to me. I was that I must have done something horrible to offend(冒犯) her without it.
“You are a white man,” she said when she got to our table.
“Yes.”
“Can you speak ?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Oh good. Come with me now, please.”
I walked outside and saw that a movie was being shot in front of one of the street’s largest .
The woman, a talent agent, had a foreigner for this movie, but he had forgotten to . She needed to find a white guy who spoke English, and I was the only one . My part was to walk from one end of the street to the other, and then the club. When I got to the club, I was supposed to to my friend and say, “Forget about the girl, man. We are here to party!” It took me three tries to say the line or walk without tripping, but I got it right.
The talent scout ran to me afterward. “You are so . I would like you to join my agency.” I know I am not going to be the next Jay Chou. , it seems that my “star” talents are being white and being able to speak English. , next time you are watching a Chinese movie, look in the . If you see a white guy stumbling (蹒跚) on his way into a nightclub, it might just be me in my way to stardom (星途).

America’s Beauty Is in Its Diversity
America is built on the idea of freedom, and there is no exception for Muslim women. I the freedom of religion and speech. But mostly, I believe it’s OK to be , and to stand up for who and what you are. So I believe in wearing the hijab.
The hijab is a religious head covering, like a scarf. I am Muslim, and keeping my head covered is a of maturity(成熟)and respect toward my and to Allah’s will. , I also like to wear it to be different. I don’t usually like to do what everyone else is doing. I want to be a(n) , not just part of the crowd. But when I first wore it, I was also afraid of the that I’d get at school.
I on my own that sixth grade was the I should start wearing the hijab. I was about what the kids would say or even do to me. I thought they might make fun of me, or be scared of me and my headscarf. Kids at that age usually like to be all the same, and there’s little or no of differences.
On the first day of school, I put all those thoughts behind my back and walked in with my head held high. I was holding my breath a little, but I was also proud to be a Muslim, proud to be wearing the hijab, proud to be different.
I was about everything I thought the kids would say or even do to me. I actually met a lot of people because of wearing my head covering. Most of the kids would come and ask me questions — — about the hijab and why I wore it.
I did hear some kid was making fun of me, there was one girl—she wasn’t even in my class, and we never really talked much–and she spoke me, and I wasn’t even there! I made a lot of new friends that year, friends that I still have until this very day, five years later.
Yes, I’m different, but everyone is different here, in one way or another. This is the of America.

It was a great way to__43__. The Act of Kindness was anonymous(匿名的),and we loved what we saw in the back view mirror: a__44__and delighted person holding up his lunch bag and just looking at us__45__we drove off.
We had come to the end of our “ route” where there was a small woman standing there, asking for__46__. We handed her our final lunch bag, and then made a U-turn to head back in the opposite direction for home. Unfortunately, the light stopped us. I was __47__and didn’t know quite how to behave.
“No one has ever done anything like this for me before,” the woman said with__48__. I replied, “Well, I’m glad that we were the first one.”__49__ uneasy , and wanting to move the conversation along, I asked, “So, when do you think you’ll eat your lunch?”
“Oh honey, I’m not going to__50__this lunch.” I was confused , and she continued , “I have a little girl of my own at home and she just __51__ McDonald’s , but I can never buy it for her because I just don’t have the __52__ . You know what… tonight she is going to have McDonald’s !”
So many times I had__53__whether our Acts of Kindness were too small or insignificant to really__54__any difference . Yet in that moment, I recognized the__55__of Mother Teresa’s words, “We cannot do great things---only small things with great love.”

How long can human beings live? Most scientists who study old age think that the human body is1to live no longer than 120 years. However, 110 years is probably the longest that anyone could hope to live -- if he or she is2healthy and lucky. Some scientists even say we can live as long as 130 years! Yet, our cells simply cannot continue to reproduce3. They wear out, and as a result, we get old and4die.
Even though we can't live forever, we are living a5life than ever before. In 1900, the average American life span (寿命) was only 47 years, but today it is 75 years!
When does old age begin then? Sixty-five may be out-of-date as the6line between middle age and old age. After all, many older people don't begin to experience physical and mental7until after age 75.
People are living longer because more people8childhood. Before modern medicine changed the laws of nature, many children died of common childhood9. Now that the chances of dying10are much lower, the chances of living long are much higher due to better diets and health care.
On the whole, our population is getting older. The11in our population will have lasting effects on our social development and our way of life. Some people fear such changes will be for the worse, while some see12, not disaster, many men and women in their "golden years" are healthy, still active, and young in13if not in age.
As the society grows old, we need the14of our older citizens. With long lives ahead of them, they need to15active and devoted.

Do you remember last summer, when angry travelers were urging the government to do something about airline customer service? Airlines 36 to improve, and they adopted (采用) new standards just before Christmas. 37 as another summer nears, plenty of 38 travelers don’t see much improvement in customer 39 overall.
This month, the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) office will publish its first critical 40 on whether airlines are 41 their promises. One survey suggests problems: the number of 42 to the DOT about the top 10 airlines in the first 43 rose 89% from a year ago .
Hit last summer by passenger complaints and the threat (威慑) of consumer-protection laws by the 44 _, 14 airlines 45 to adopt a set of basic customer-service standards called Customers First . The “12 promises” to passengers were introduced 46 a major effort to improve service. Since then, airlines have been redesigning websites , retraining employees and upgrading technology
Recently, DOT inspector general Kenneth Mead, at McCain’s request, sent 20 examiners to airports to 47 whether each airline is doing what it promised. Mead warns travelers shouldn’t 48 too much. Most of the promises are 49 better communication with customers , not problems with flights .
“Passengers should show more understanding to airlines about their 50 to better air service.” Spokeswoman Shelly Sassoon says. “And when 51 are made, it takes a long time for them to be noticed,” she says.
Now, the efforts may be working. During the first quarter, Delta had the second-lowest rate of complaints among the 52 10 carriers. 53 , its rate, along with other carriers’, is up from last year. McCain and other lawmakers say there may be a 54 to pass new consumer-protection 55 .

Years ago, if a teenager had some problems in her life, she might go home and write in her diary. Now, a teenager with problems might go onto the Internet and write about them in a blog (博客). In many ways, a diary and a blog are very .So, what makes blogging different from writing in diary?
The biggest difference is that blogging is much more than a diary. Usually, a teenager treats her diary like a book full of that she does not want to .
It’s interesting that someone who writes in a blog a diary will probably write nearly the same information. I have a little sister, and sometimes I go online to read her . She writes about things like waking up early for swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry test. I was at her age, I wrote about the same things, but in my diary. Then, after I had finished writing, I would hide my diary in a secret place because I was that my sister might read it!
The biggest with blogging is that anyone can read what you write. If I was angry with a friend during high school and wrote something about her in my diary, she would never know. , if my sister ever wrote something bad about a friend, that friend read her blog and get angry.
There are also to blogging, of course. If I was feeling sad one day and wrote in my diary, “Nobody cares about me.” would know about it. However, if my sister wrote the same sentence in her blog, her best friends would respond and tell her how much they her. Blogs help people stay in with their friends and to hear what the people around them are doing.
