A friend of mine was sitting in the living room one day when his cat dragged in a little “gift” in its mouth—a dead animal of some sort. Taking a closer look, he was surprised to 36 it as the bunny(小兔子) that 37 Mary, the young daughter of the family next door. My friend felt 38 , believing his cat had killed Mary’s bunny.
My quick-thinking friend came up with a plan. 39 from the cat’s mouth the dead animal, which by now was a 40 mess, he put it in the kitchen sink. With a little warm water and some shampoo, he tried to 41 the dead bunny as best he could. Then he took a hair dryer and blowdried the bunny 42 it looked pretty good.
Finally, under the cover of darkness, he crept into the next-door garden and placed it 43 in the cage. He managed to make the bunny look very 44 there in his little box.
The next morning, my friend looked out of the window and noticed a crowd of people 45 around the rabbit hutch(笼). Everyone seemed to be talking and pointing. My friend 46 to go over and act like any normal 47 neighbor and find out what was going on.
When he got there, Mary’s mother said to my friend, “You won’t believe this! It’s a(n) 48 thing! Mary’s bunny 49 a few days ago, and we buried that little bunny right over there…”
Have you ever tried to cover up one wrongdoing with another? Covering up only makes matters 50 .
When we get caught doing something 51 , for example, we may 52 to cover it up with a lie. But just like Mary’s bunny, the result is 53 what we expected. We 54 looking foolish. We would have been better off admitting we were wrong and accepting the 55 . What do you think of it?

I ran into a stranger as he passed by. "I'm so 36 !" was my reply. Then he said, "Excuse me too. I wasn't even 37 you" .We were very polite, this stranger and I.

That night, as I lay 42 in bed, God's quiet voice spoke to me and said, "While 43 with a stranger, you're calm and polite, but with those you love, you're quick to 44 . Go and look right now on the kitchen floor. You'll 45 some flowers there by the door. Those are the flowers she brought for you. She 46 them herself. She stood there _ 47 , not to spoil your surprise, and you never saw the tears in her eyes." 48 this time, I felt sad and my own tears had begun to 49 . "Are these the flowers you picked for me?" I asked. She 50, "I found them out by the tree. 1 knew you'd like them." I said, "I'm so sorry that I 51 them today. And I shouldn't have shouted at you that way." She whispered, “Mommy, that's okay... I still love you 52 .” I hugged her.

I’ll never forget my first daughter, who died too early from a bad accident. During those years, life was 36 . One Christmas I found my 3-year-old daughter 37 with a roll of golden wrapping paper. I had bought the paper to finish a rather important project. So I became 38 and scolded her loudly, “You are not good. And you are 39 your father’s money. You don’t know how hard your parents are working.” She was 40 and cried bitterly, running away.
41 , she brought a gift, a golden 42 made of golden wrapping paper to me the next morning and said, “This is for you, Daddy.” I was 43 of my earlier hurting words, but my anger rose again when I found out the box was 44 . I shouted at her, “Don’t you know, when you give someone a present, there is supposed to be something inside?” She 45 at me with tears in her eyes and cried, “Oh, Daddy, it’s not empty at all. I blew 46 into the box. They’re all for you, Daddy.”
I was completely 47 . I put my arms around her and begged for her 48 . A year later, a serious 49 took the life of my daughter. I was so sad that I 50 in bed for three days and three nights, saying nothing with tears rolling down my cheek. From then on, I hated cars and kept the golden box by my bed for many years. Whenever I was 51 , I would take out an imaginary kiss and 52 the love of my daughter who had put it there.
In a very real 53 , each one of us, as humans beings, has been given a golden container 54 with unconditional love and kisses ... from our children, family members, friends, and God. There are 55 no other possessions that anyone could hold more precious than this.

High school seems bigger. There are 36 kids and it’s a totally new environment. It could be a 37 time for new students, 38 ,in fact, it isn’t really that bad.
The first day of course is always terrifying, but, then again, the first day of middle school was probably the 39 .Of course you might get lost during the first few days 40 your classes, but after a while what seems like a large school really isn’t.
One thing that’s really cool about high school is that there are so many more classes that you can 41 .For example, if you like 42 ,there are many art classes. At the same time, there are 43 classes, which you can’t take in middle school 44 photography and psychology(心理学).There are many new things in high school that make it much more 45 .
In high school, you’re able to join more clubs, play more sports, and take part in more 46 ,and at the same time make new friends with kids with the same 47 as you. Also, these activities can give you a 48 to learn something that you might not have had the opportunity to learn in 49 .
High school is different 50 everyone, but there’s one thing that’s 51 .You’re going to have just as much fun here as you 52 before. But having fun isn’t enough though! You’re 53 so you have to be more responsible. Everything changes when you get 54 ,but the changes aren’t that bad. You 55 worry too much about growing up.

It was the beginning of a new term. As a(n) 36 teacher in that school, I didn’t know any of the students. A little girl was 37 at the gate of the classroom. She looked very 38 .
I walked up to her and asked 39 she stood there. But she said 40 . Instead, a boy shouted, “She is from Grade Four, the 41 student in her grade.” I looked at the little girl, who didn’t seem to be the smart kind. I 42 why her teacher asked her to stay in Grade Three. I took her hand and 43 her into the classroom.
“Sit here. Now you are my student and I’m your teacher,” I said. She 44 said nothing, but she burst into tears.

I 49 her after school, and she was making 50 little by little. I encouraged her and as 51 went by, she was not as shy as before. At the end of the term, she seemed to have forgotten all her 52 . She was not one of the best students when she left that school, 53 at least, she was not that shy and sad little girl any longer.
In the following 54 , she would send me a card on each Thanksgiving Day. Three days ago, I received a(n) 55 to her wedding. And now, I am at her wedding, and she is smiling brightly.

Job stress has been known to cause heart problems in people who already have cardiovascular(心血管) disease. Now Finnish scientists have shown that 50 in healthy people the pressure of work can cause damage.
High blood pressure, lack of 51 , smoking and being overweight 52 to heart disease—a 53 killer in many industrialized countries.
But Mika Kivimaki, of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, and his colleagues, who studied the 54 histories of 812 healthy Finnish men and women in a metal industry company over 25 years, said job stress also plays an important role.
Workers who had the highest job-related stress levels at the start of the study were more than twice as 55 to die of heart disease, 56 the study published in The British Medical Journal.
Work stress 57 too much work as well as a lack of satisfaction and feeling undervalued and 58 .
Many people work long hours but if the effort is 59 the stress is minimized. Kivimaki said job pressure is damaging when being overworked is 60 with little or no control, unfair supervision and few career opportunities.
The British Heart Foundation said the results 61 earlier research showing that people in jobs with low control, such as manual workers, could be at greater 62 of heart disease than other employees.
“It is 63 for people to try to minimize levels of stress at work and for employers to 64 people to have more control at work and to be rewarded for their success,” the foundation said in a statement.

My chance came at last. Our school was going to hold a sports meet. I knew what it 41 to me so I got up very early to prepare for it. I 42 running and jumping. When I was 43 , I reminded myself of my promise and went on.
44 the time came nearer, I felt quite 45 . On the first day I came fourth in the 1500m 46 but I was far from 47 because what I wanted most was the highlight of the sports meeting—250x8 relay race. I would run the last leg for my team.
With a shot, the race began. All the students were 48 for their team. The competition was so 49 that I began to feel nervous. Before my turn came, my team was 50 the others. Even worse, I almost dropped the stick when I was trying to 51 it.
52 after that, there was nothing in my mind except to run as fast as possible. Just when I was approaching the finish line, my legs 53 . Then my promise came to mind again and 54 me to go on. To my surprise, I was the first to 55 the finish line!
56 , I had proved to myself and those who had often laughed at me that I am not 57 at all! My classmates greeted me warmly and I hugged them tightly. I had won the prize as well as their 58 .
From the sports meeting, I learnt that sometimes things are not so difficult as they 59 to be. Just try your best without fear and you might be surprised at the 60 .

On my birthday this year, I decided to do something very different. I had been 31 so much and I wanted to reach out to bring happiness to someone else. I entered the room with the flowers. The elderly woman looked up, staring at me 38 . She was greatly moved when I told her about my 39 in being there. The day before Father’s Day, Mrs. Berry asked her students to __36 ___ a card for their fathers. She passed out paper and pieces of cloth.
Elizabeth looked for a while at the blue cloth and began to cut it. Then she folded (折)her paper in half and began writing. When Elizabeth finally looked at the message the teacher gave on the paper, she noticed something else. She felt her 37 grow hot — she hadn’t heard that anyone who didn’t have a father could make one for a grandfather or an uncle.
As her teacher walked to her, Elizabeth tried 38 her card with her arm, but Mrs Berry gently 39 it so that she could read it. Elizabeth sat 40 , waiting for her to say something, but she saw a 41 roll down Mrs Berry’s face. She had never made Mrs Berry so upset.
When school was over, Elizabeth 42 until all the other kids left so that she could 43 . “I’m sorry for not listening. I’ll make another card 44 you want. I’ll do it 45 and bring it tomorrow.”
“ 46 are you talking about?” asked Mrs Berry.
“My Father’s Day card. I know you’re upset because I didn’t do it 47 .”
“Elizabeth, that was the 48 card in the whole class. It was so 49 that it made me cry.”
Elizabeth was so 50 that she ran out of the classroom.
When her mom came home from work that night, Elizabeth 51 to give her the card early.

Dear Mom,
I know you work really hard to be both a mommy and a(n) 53 . I want to thank you and 54 you a happy Father’s Day!
Love,
Elizabeth

My grandparents were married for over half a century, and played their own special game from the time they had met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word "shmily" in a 31 place for the other to find. They took turns leaving "shmily" around the house, and as soon as one of them 32 it, it was their turn to hide it once more.
There was no 33 to the places where "shmily" would appear. Sometimes, "Shmily" was written in the 34 left on the mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. 35 , my grandmother even unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper to 36 "shmily" on the very last sheet.
It took me a long time before I was able to fully 37 my grandparents' game. It was 38 their funny little game; it was a way of life. Grandma and Grandpa held hands every chance they could. They 39 kisses as they ran into each other in their tiny kitchen. Before every meal they bowed their heads and gave their 40 : a wonderful family, good fortune, and 41 .
But there was a 42 cloud in my grandparents' life: my grandmother had breast cancer, which had first appeared ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every
43 of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way 44____ she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too 45 to go outside. Then one day, what we all 46 finally happened. Grandma was gone.
"Shmily." It was written in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother's funeral bouquet. As the crowd 47 and the last mourners (哀悼者) turned to leave, my aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members 48 and gathered around Grandma 49 . Grandpa stepped up to my grand-mother's casket and, 50 with sorrow, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came, a deep and throaty lullaby (摇篮曲).
SHMILY: See how much I love you.

Some talked of jobs they already had, others talked of jobs they 43 get. With the certainty of four years of college, they felt 44 and able to take control(控制)of the world.
The coming exam, they knew, would be a(n) 45 task, as the professor had said they could bring 46 books or notes they wanted, requesting only that they did not 47 each other during the test.
48 they entered the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. And smiles 49 on the students’ faces as they found there were only five questions.
Three hours had passed 50 the professor began to collect papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. Papers in hand, no one spoke as the professor faced the class.
He looked at the 51 faces before him, and then asked: “How many completed all five questions?” 52 a hand was raised.
“How many answered four?” Still no hand.
“Three? Two?” The students moved restlessly in their seats.
“One, then? Certainly somebody finished 53 .” But the class remained silent.
The professor put down the papers. “That is exactly what I 54 ,” he said. “I just want you to know that, although you have completed four years of study, there are 55 many things about the 56 you don’t know. These questions you could not answer are relatively common(普遍)in everyday 57 .” Then, smiling, he added, “You will all 58 this course, but remember—even though you are now college graduates, your education had just 59 .”
The years have weakened the name of the professor, but not the 60 he taught.

Dear Dad,
I was very upset when I received your letter. I knew you 36 not like my results, but I didn’t realize you and Mum were so 37 with me. This has made me 38 very carefully about myself, and now I 39 how silly I have been.
My poor 40 have come from my own 41 . Of course, I want to do my best. I want you and Mum to be proud 42 me, but somehow when I get to school I just can’t keep my 43 on the subject and I stop 44 the teacher. So many other things seem so much more 45 , but I know that I must not 46 the chance you and Mum have given me. If I don’t work very hard 47 the next few months, I am going to get 48 results. So I am going to study hard this summer. And I will show Mum anything 49 I can’t understand so that she can give me help.
I 50 you will allow me to play some basketball. I think I need some exercise, 51 _ I will control the time I 52 on it properly.
If you want me to stop meeting Cindy, I will — but there is 53 serious. We are just good friends, and she often helps me 54 my schoolwork.
Dad, I am really sorry I have made you angry. I’m going to try my best to 55 my study. I promise that I will make you proud of me soon.
Yours,
Jimmy
