Last term, I took a pottery (陶艺) class at the local art center. One day, when I started rolling the clay (黏土) into a long snake, as my teacher told me, the boy next to me was still hitting his clay loudly. I said, “Hey, our teacher asks us to make a snake now.” He paid no attention and continued. Worried he wouldn’t have time to make his snake, I rolled out an extra (额外的) one. “Here,” I said. “You can have this if you like.”

“Do you always tell everyone what to do?” he shouted.

What did I do to make him angry at me?

The next class, I found a different seat. But the boy was surprisingly quiet during class. Walking past him, I noticed him making a cool box. He saw me looking at him and glared. “Are you planning to tell me how to do this, too?” I felt my face get hot and I almost thought I would cry.

When I arrived at the art center for the next class, I happened to hear the talk between that boy and his mother. It turned out his father was leaving them and his mother just wanted him to stay with his grandma for a while.

It seemed everyone was to tell him what to do! No wonder he didn’t want me to tell him what to do!

We don’t always know what’s going on in other people’s lives or why they act in their ways. We should give them some space, and give us space too if the ways they’re acting are hurting us. But remember to stay kind. There’s a good chance their unfriendliness is not about us at all.
