The custom(风俗) of drinking tea began in China almost 5,000 years ago. The drink spread to the rest of Asia and reached Europe in the middle of the 16th century. It did not appear in England about a hundred years later.
One of the first coffee housewho offered tea sold it at 6 to 10 per pound, a price only the very rich could . Regardless of the price, tea got popular. As more and more of it was imported(进口 ) into Britain, it enough for the rich. By 1750, it had become a drink of all classes in England.
Anna Maria Stanhope( 1783~1857) , known the Duchess(公爵夫人) of Bedford, is considered the creator of the British meal "aftemoon tea". Dinner was not until late in the evening, and the Duchess felt hungry in the afternoon. She really enjoyed inviting friends to join for a meal at five o'clock which included cakes, sandwiches, sweets, and, of course, tea. This custom was quickly picked up by other fashionable people, and by the of the country in the end.
