Popular gifts in past decades
The Chinese nation has been a state of ceremonies since ancient times and it’s a long tradition for Chinese people to send gifts to each other. A Chinese saying goes that “the gift is trifling (微不足道的) but the feeling is profound”.
As time and the economy change, gifts change. Let’s see what gifts were popular in past decades in China.
1950s: Food was most needed.
At that time foodstuff was in great shortage and therefore food was the most welcome gifts. There were very few choices at the time and food was enough to make one happy.
1960s: Red books
In 1960s, food was provided by canteens(食堂) and therefore as a gift it decreased in popularity while political elements rose. The books, Mao Zedong’s Collections or Quotations (语录) of Chairman Mao were considered precious gifts.
1970s: “Three pieces of treasure”
Without fireworks and Spring Holiday during the “cultural revolution” (1966-1976), the most popular gifts were called “three pieces of treasure”: a washbasin, towel and china cup. Most items were printed with red stars and slogans like “push forward revolution and production”.
Foodstuffs were still in shortage at this time and thus food became the best gift again. Cakes and desserts were popular as gifts. Sugar and tea were also well received.
1990s: Cigarettes and wine were inseparable(不可分的)
As the economy developed and people’s livelihoods improved, , such as watches and sunglasses. Nevertheless, tea and wine played main roles because they were considered decent(得体的) and proper.
2000s: Gifts for health
As the wheel of history rolled into the new century, Chinese people saw their livelihoods continue to rise. People also frequently sent luxuries such as cosmetics, jewelry and high-grade wine and tea to each other.
2010s: Special gifts
Compared with luxuries, people prefer gifts that have value as collectibles (收藏品) as well as special characteristics. For example, art works and jade became the new favorites. A shopping card is also welcome as it is not so vulgar (庸俗的) as money.
