Gary and Gavin were twin brothers who worked in a department store owned by their father. After their father had passed away, they took over the store. Everything went well until the day a twenty-dollar bill disappeared. Gary had left the bill on the cash register. But when he returned, the money was gone.
Gary then asked his brother Gavin, “Did you see that twenty-dollar bill on the cash register?” Gavin said that he had not. But Gary did not let it go and kept questioning. “Twenty-dollar bills can’t get up and walk away by themselves! Surely you must have seen it.” There was accusation in Gary’s voice. Tempers began to rise and anger grew. “I said I didn’t see it!” Gavin raised his voice.
The quarrel divided the young men and they could no longer work together. Later, a wall was built in the center of the store. For twenty years, they never said a word to each other.
One day, a strange man came to the store. He walked in and asked Gary, “How long have you been here?” Gary replied that he’d been there all his life. “Then you are the person I’m looking for, since I must tell you the truth,” the customer said emotionally. “Twenty years ago, I was totally broke and hungry. I entered this store from the back door and saw a twenty-dollar bill on the cash register. And I took it. All these years I hadn’t been able to forget that. I had to come back and ask for your forgiveness(宽恕).”
The stranger felt very surprised when seeing tears come to the eyes of the middle-aged man in front of him. “Would you please go next door and tell the same story to the man in the store?” Gary asked. “Why are you in college at such an age?” I asked.

“No, seriously,” I asked.
“I always dreamed of having a college education. Now I’m getting one!” she told me.
After a year, Rose became . She could easily get along well with others wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed the attention from others.
At the end of the term we invited Rose to at our party. I’ll never forget what she taught us.
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. Here are the secrets of staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you your dreams, you die!” she said.

“Your beliefs become your thoughts; your thoughts become your words; your words become your actions; your actions become your habits; your habits become your values; your values (价值)become your destiny(命运).”
The above words were said by Mohandas Handhi(默罕默德. 甘地). From these words, we can learn the importance of values.
Since values are so i in our life, then what values should we learn so as to live a meaningful life?
Love --- By love, it doesn’t necessarily mean romantic love. I , it could mean kindness. There are many ways for us to s kindness to others. For example, we can give a hand to people who are in trouble, or we can say some encouraging words to those who are sad.
Responsibility --- Responsibility seems to be a huge word for middle school students. However, we should learn to take responsibility for our actions. We should not be selfish (自私的) or think just for o .
Honesty --- “Honesty is the best policy,” but how many of us actually believe that? As we grow up, we find it easier to tell l . But we should remember that though we may not always be caught, those demons(恶魔) of dishonesty will go with us for the r of our life.
Courage --- Courage means we should be willing to admit our mistakes and face difficulties and challenges w fear.
Let’s keep these values in mind and live a meaningful life.
Different weather makes people feel different. It has an effect on health, intelligence and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, IQ(智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today? It may be the weather’s problem.
Is it easy for people to have health problems in hot and wet summer?
What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?
Why is it possible that winter is a bad time for thin people?
How do people become when there is low air pressure?
At what temperature do people probably feel most comfortable?
