As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared (使惊恐) me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains (窗帘) seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.
One of the processes (过程) about growing up is being able to realize and overcome (克服) our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

Jane Austen (1775-1817), an English novelist, started writing young and completed six novels in her life. Today Austen’s books are more popular than ever. In the last 10 years, five of her six novels have been made into Hollywood films, while her books continue to be best-sellers.
Richard Jenkyns, a professor of English at Oxford University, says that her novels are about marriage, friendships and the family, which are still with us today. “The stories are timeless,” Jenkyns said.
Pride and Prejudice(偏见)(1813) is Austen’s most famous work. It is a love story about Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. At first, these two dislike each other. Elizabeth is pretty, smart and lively. She is proud because Darcy doesn’t know about her family. Mr. Darcy is handsome, rich and has a better family background. So, he is proud as well. At the same time, Darcy holds a prejudice against the Bennet family. He has no understanding of why the family, especially its mother and daughters should try so hard to find wealthy and powerful husbands. He thinks they are vulgar. Anyway, Elizabeth and Darcy finally fall in love and become a romantic couple(夫妻) but their families don’t want them to.
In Pride and Prejudice, some of the main things that Jane Austen wants to teach people are as follows. Opposites can attract(吸引) each other. Lovers should not only make each other feel relaxed or comfortable, but also educate and improve each other.
Austen os often called the greatest romantic writer, so it is surprising she remained unmarried. ‘Maybe she was too romantic, waiting for the perfect man,” Jenkyns says.

Nearly half of elementary and high schools in the US use the Presidential Fitness Test. It checks kids’ fitness levels. Students are tested at least twice a year. In 1956, US President Eisenhower created the test, and it has been a tradition in schools since 1966.
There are five activities in the test: sit-ups(仰卧起坐), push-ups(俯卧撑), sit and reach, endurance run or walk and shuttle run(折返跑). Students who get scores at or above 85 percent on all the activities can get a Presidential Physical Fitness Award.
The test encourages students to live a healthy and active life. Students taking the test are really testing their limits, according to the US National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
China has a similar test: the physical education(PE) test. Beginning at the age of 7, students in China are tested twice a year to check if they are healthy and strong. They also finish activities like the endurance run, sit-ups and the shuttle run.
However, unlike students in the US who get awards, Chinese students get points in PE tests. The highest score is 100. For junior school students, the PE test is more important because it is worth 30 to 40 points in the entrance exam for senior high school. In order to get a good score, most students begin to prepare for the test in their junior one year.

Every time we turn on the TV or take a ride in a car, we could be adding to a problem called acid rain(酸雨). In this article, we’ll learn something important about acid rain.
The formation of acid rain
When people use fuels (燃料), such as coal and gasoline(汽油), poisonous(有毒的) gases are given off. When these gases come together with rain, acid rain forms. Many power stations burn fuels in order to create the electricity(电) that we use in our homes and offices every day. Cars and trucks also send these gases into the air when they burn gasoline. When rain meets these gases, harmful things called acids form. This is acid rain.
The harm of acid rain
Acid rain destroys(破坏) everything. It poisons our rivers, ponds and lakes and oceans along with the life in them. It pollutes our soils and crops, harm trees, and can cause the death of fish and plants. Acid rain also eats away at our buildings.
The prevention of acid rain
We need to reduce and even stop the pollution that gets into our air. Turn off lights, televisions and other electrical appliances(电器) if we are not using them. Walk and take a bike whenever possible. If we are travelling a long distance, take a bus or train to save fuel.
As research shows, acid rain harms our environment. But people everywhere can take small steps now to help protect our environment and make our children change.
