For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines—a never-ending flood of words. In     a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend           can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us, are     readers. Most of us develop poor reading    at an early age, and never get over them. The main deficiency     in the actual stuff of language itself—words. Taken individually, words have     meaning until they are strung together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs.     , however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously reads one word at a time, often regressing (退回) to      words or passages. Regression, the tendency to look back over      you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which      down the speed of reading is vocalization—sounding each word either orally or mentally as      reads.
To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an      , which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined (预先确定的) speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate      the reader finds comfortable, in order to "stretch" him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast,      word-by-word reading, regression and subvocalization (默读) practically impossible. At first      is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster,      your comprehension will improve. Many people have found      reading skill drastically improved after some training.    Charles Au, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 72 words a minute     the training, now it is an excellent 128 words a minute. He is delighted that how he can     a lot more reading material in a short period of time.

BEIJING—Seven prestigious universities in China announced Sunday that they would begin using the same independent exam —besides the national one —to test students hoping to gain entrance to them in 2011.
The seven are Peking University, Beihang University, Beijing Normal University, Nankai University, Fudan University, Xiamen University and Hong Kong University.
Students who want to gain entrance to any of the seven universities will only have to sit one independent exam, according to the joint announcement.
"This will help lighten the students' load, otherwise they must take several exams for different universities," said the announcement.
Passing the exam could result in more than one interview chance, giving the students more opportunities to choose their favorite universities.
China's college entrance exam system is undergoing reform as universities aim to select students based on independent criteria rather than just using the results of the national exam.
In 2003, Peking University and another 21 universities were allowed to pilot (试用) the reform byusing their own criteria to independently select five percent of their students.
Now nearly 80 universities across the country have the right to select talented students based on their own exams.
Education experts regard universities selecting students according to independent examinations as conducive (有助的) to better understanding where the students, talents lie.
Although this may be the case, it has also created problems as students may sit many different exams as they often apply for a number of universities.
To relieve students from such pressures, the national education outline (2010—2020) released in July this year encourages high-level universities to group together to use the same exams.
If students want to be admitted to the seven prestigious universities, they can __________.

A.only pass the interview.
B.only take the national exam.
C.only take the independent exam.
D.either take the national exam or take the independent exam.

What's the purpose of students sitting one independent exam to gain entrance to the seven universities?

A.It can reduce students' load to take several exams.
B.The universities will have the same standard to test students.
C.There will be less trouble marking students' test papers.
D.It can avoid fierce competition among these universities.

If students pass the independent exam, they will __________.

A.take the national exam.
B.have one or more interview chances.
C.be admitted to one of the universities.
D.be trained to be adapted to universities life and studies.

What is the advantage of universities selecting students according to independent examinations?

A.Students needn't take the national exam.
B.Students' education cost can be lowered.
C.Students' abilities and talents can be better found.
D.It can encourage middle schools to recommend more qualified students.

Armed only with iPhones, the inventive rock band Atomic Tom has gone viral (广为流传) by way of the New York subway. The band has scored an Internet hit with the video to the song "Take Me Out."
Singer Luke White says the production was a top-secret operation.
"We didn't tell anyone about this. It was completely top-secret from our family, from our friends, from our label, our management, everybody. So the first time that people saw this video was last Friday when we put it on YouTube (视频网站)," explained White.
Since uploading the video to YouTube, band members have spent several days refreshing the page to watch the number of hits rise.
The video has also made its way around Twitter as many people have shared it with their friends.
"I mean, it still hasn't quite hit. It's just kind of blowing our minds right now that we're getting this: many people are fond of it, and they're sharing it with their friends. We don't know what it's like really to have something that's viral, so all of this is very new to us." said Eric Espiritu, the lead guitarist of the band.
White explains how the video came together:
"We did our research with the applications (应用程序) and found applications that worked out really well with the instruments and then we plugged our phones into mini-battery powered amplifiers (扩音器) that we put underneath our seats, and we did a lot of, you know, practices. In terms of figuring out what the balance of the sound like who was overpowering, who was too loud or who was too soft."
The idea for the video came from Espiritu's younger brother Benjamin. The younger Espiritu directed the video from his initial concept through the final edit and upload it to the Internet.
"I've seen a lot of the music applications come out, and I've never actually had the chance to play with them," says Ben Espiritu. "When I startedhearing about how they sound and everything, I thought it might be unique to take it one step further and then create an entire band just performing solely (单曲) on the iPhones, and I thought it would be a pretty cool idea."
Ben says the success of the band's music video is a credit to the talent and ability of the musicians, but it's also a sign of the times.
"It really comes down to seeing something different, seeing something unique, and I think that's always, in any type of art form, what will speak to people, and I think it does reflect the times that we live in, taking a smart phone and then being able to turn it into an instrument, not only just an instrument, but making it sound really good."

Is language, like food, a basic human need? Judging from the extreme experiment of Frederick in the 13th century, it may be. Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent.
All the babies died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation (剥夺,丧失). What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the ability to survive is seriously affected.
Today no much extreme deprivation exists as that ordered by Frederick. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the baby, whose brain is programmed, to map up language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems, when children learn more rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.
Linguists suggest that speech milestones are reached in a fixed order and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in achild who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.
Recent evidence suggests that a baby is born with the ability to speak. What is special about man's brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a teddy bear with the sound pattern "teddy bear".
But speech has to be developed, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child's babbling, clinging, grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals reduces the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child's nonverbal (非语言的) signals is basic to the growth and development of language.
Frederick's experiment was extreme because __________.

A.he wanted to prove children are born with ability to speak
B.he ignored the importance of mothering to the babies
C.he was unkind to the nurses
D.he wanted his nurses to say another language

The reason some children are backward in speaking today is that __________.

A.they do not listen carefully to their mothers
B.their brain have to absorb too much language at once
C.their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak
D.their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them

In Paragraph 3, by "critical times" the author means __________.

A.difficult periods in the child's life
B.moments when the child becomes critical towards its mother
C.important stages in the child's development
D.times when mothers often neglect their children

The hospital burn unit is a popular place on the day after Thanksgiving. I found that out three years ago, when my 18-month-old daughter touched a radiator pipe while playing around our friends' farmhouse. Instead of feasting on leftover stuffing, I rushed my child as she screamed to hospital. Instead of getting a jump on my Christmas shopping, I learned how to take care of second-degree burns.
Our story had a happy ending. With weeks of twice-daily treatments at Mommy and Papa's kitchentable burn clinic, my daughter's hands healed. But other children we saw at the outpatient burn clinic weren't so lucky. I saw hands __________, a mouth that would never smile straight, a scalp that would never grow hair. All the parents had stories of accidents as easy as ours: a cup of tea knocked from a side table, a tumble (摔倒) into a space heater. "Heaters and soup," one veteran nurse told me at the hospital. "That's all it is. Heaters and soup."
Most of the injuries were to hands and wrists, and most came from contact with hot liquids or from touching hot objects. Not only do small children not realize the danger posed by hot objects; their skin is much thinner than that of adults. They burn more quickly, and the burns tend to be deeper and more severe.
Traditional fire safety education focused on preventing fires. The number of children injured by playing with fire has declined substantially when the Consumer Product Safety Commission required that cigarette lighters be child-resistant. "We know people know about smoke alarms," says Chrissy, program manager for Safe Kids USA, a nonprofit that works to reduce childhood injuries. Now, fire safety experts hope that public education efforts will turn to burns that can be just as terrible as injuries caused by flame.
Which sentence in the passage is the closest in meaning to the following one?
People used to be warned of the fire burns.
