For many people the subject of hiccups (嗝) is a joke, but for Harry Mendes, a fifteen-year-old schoolboy from Birmingham, it was something quite different.
His hiccups began one Sunday lunch time and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry’s parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack.
Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him.
“When I began to hiccup, I drank a glass of water but that didn’t do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and drank cold drinks. My father even tried to give me a shock but that didn’t work either.”
After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn’t find anything wrong.
“They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”

A habit is any action that we have performed so often that it becomes something we do almost without thinking. Some of them are thought to be bad habits. People spend countless hours and dollars each year trying to drop these bad habits but often fail. Why? Change is hard work and there is no shortcut to achieve it. However, there is still some advice for you to follow.
First, look at why you do it. In other words, what’s the result of doing this thing? If your bad habit is shouting at people when you are unhappy or under pressure, what do you get from it? It may make you feel a little better for the moment. Or maybe you have a bad habit of leaving your homework undone. The result could be that you get more time to spend on the Internet!
Next, take a look on the other hand. What are you losing because of your habit? Shouting at other people is a bad habit because it makes people around you feel bad and unhappy. Leaving your homework undone is a bad habit because you may be punished by your teacher. Having more Internet time means that you are losing the chance to learn the things that you need to learn. When you think that way, you’ll find that it’s not wise to keep your bad habit! Now it is time to make a decision. What will you choose? I’m sure you will choose to do what you think is more important.
From the first paragraph we know that .
A.people always fail to break bad habits |
B.we must change all the habits we have |
C.a habit is a terrible thing we can never change |
D.it’s difficult, but we should do something about bad habits |
The underlined sentence “there is no shortcut to achieve it” means that .
A.it is not easy to give up bad habits | B.there is a long way and a short way |
C.something dangerous may happen | D.we must cut bad habits in a short time |
According to the passage, if you want to drop your habits, you have to .
A.talk to others when you are in low spirits | B.know why you do what you do |
C.finish your homework first | D.spend less time on the Internet |
The main purpose of this passage is to ask us .
A.not to shout at people when we are sad | B.not to spend much time on the Internet |
C.to give up our bad habits | D.to decide what to choose |

A 10-year-old boy decided to learn judo though he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
“ Master,” the boy finally asked, “shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”“ This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the teacher answered.
Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first competition. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent (对手) became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the final.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. Soon after the match started, the boy seemed to lose. Thinking that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out. He was going to stop the match when the teacher appeared. “ No,” the teacher said, “Let him continue.” A short time after the match carried on, his opponent made a careless mistake. At once, the boy used his move to pin (压住) him. The boy won the match and the competition.
On the way home, the boy asked the teacher what was really in his mind. “ Why could I win the competition with only one move?” The teacher answered. “ First, you’ve mastered one of the most difficult throws in judo. Second, your opponent can only attack your left arm to win you.”
